POST-MATCH THREAD: Charlton Athletic v Norwich City: Saturday 24th October 2026: KO 12:30

Four changes today for this early kickoff against visitors Norwich City. Charlie Kelman, Joe Rankin-Costello, Josh Edwards, and Sonny Carey make the starting eleven. Norwich are in a poor run of form, as are Charlton, so this was likely to be a cagey affair.

Charlton seemed to have lost the toss and Norwich turned them around so that the home side kicked off towards the Covered End. It wasn’t what the Addicks would have planned for but a cutting through ball put dangerman Tyreece Campbell through on goal. The keeper, in no-man’s-land, did well to shield his goal, getting a leg on Campbell’s shot. Charlton kept applying pressure to a fragile Norwich defence.

Charlton’s breakthrough came just under ten minutes in. The Norwich keeper tried to play the ball out into midfield but Kayne Ramsay was alert and cut in front of his man to toe the ball into Joe Rankin-Costello’s path. His first touch and little dink to turn the ball forward into Charlie Kelman’s path. Kelman was pushed out to the right a little with his first touch but he quickly calculated the angles and managed to cut his shot perfectly to find the back of the net through traffic. It was a lovely finish after some quality aggressive defending from the front. It was exactly what we’ve been missing.

At the other end, Charlton limited Norwich through brilliant bits of individual defending. Norwich did have the ball in the back of the net early on, in there first attack, but it was rightly ruled offisde. It was Kayne Ramsay’s outstanding ability to step in front of his man to win the ball that stood out. But it was Billy Koumetio that made the challenge of the half. Lloyd Jones found himself caught out when Koumetio lost the ball, but the big man’s sprint back was rewarded when his perfectly timed and executed tackle in the box thwarted an almost certain equaliser.

By thirty minutes in, Norwich had settled into a period of good possession. Their passing was good and Charlton, while they maintained good shape, were often a step behind their opponents, as the home side were dragged around. Norwich were growing in confidence. Four minutes later, Kayne Ramsay made a mistake on the half way line when he lobbed the ball up instead of hooking it forward. The ball dropped kindly for the away side and that set Norwich on the attack. The next ball was driven forward past Conor Coventry’s outstretched leg. Maghoma latched onto it as he burst into the box. Okonkwo was beaten soundly by a rocket of a shot from his left that left him little chance of stopping the equaliser. The rest of the half was mostly Norwich probing in possession.

No changes for the Addicks to start the second half, but Norwich welcomed back from injury their captain, Kenny McLean, an influential player they’d hope would provide more experience and stability. And they started the half well, on the front foot and looking to push ahead in a reversal of the start of the first.

Norwich scored their second on forty-nine minutes. A cross in from the Norwich left picked out a free Norwich head at the back post. Jones and Koumetio were guilty of marking the same man leaving time and space for a free header at close range.

Nathan Jones then made three changes. Harvey Knibbs, Miles Leaburn, and Ivan Mesik came on to replace Sonny Carey, Karlan Grant, and Josh Edwards. The changes had an impact immediately when Tyreece Camopbell whipped in a cross that deflected in off a Norwich defender. Charlton celebrated their equaliser but the celebration was short lived. A late flag ruled it offside. Charlie Kelman was adjudged to have been a whisker too far forward and Charlton were challenged to build momentum in their favour again.

The next Charlton opportunity came through Tyreece Campbell’s hard graft down the right flank as his run launched a counterattack. He outfought his defender a number of times, riding the touchline, then done him for pace before as he strode into the box to slip Kelman through with only the keeper to beat. He did well to manufacture a shot but the keeper was equal to the task and made the save.

Charlton’s next change was for tired legs in midfield. Gaps had appeared between the lines and Charlton were vulnerable to the counter. Alan Mwamba replaced Conor Coventry on just under seventy-five minutes. Norwich also made a couple of changes and, unfortunately, it was their man that made an immediate impact. He worked Billy Koumetio on the Charlton left in the box and his shot was stabbed in through an Ivan Mesik deflection to make the score 3-1 in Norwich’s favour.

The third goal was a real blow. Micah Mbick came on to replace Rankin-Costello but by that time the atmosphere was flat and there didn’t look any path for Charlton’s redemption. There were eight minutes of added time but there was little for Charlton to hang their hopes on.

It’s a difficult run of form to say the least. Too many draws now stacked atop a string of losses and poor performances have soured the start to this campaign. I’m not sure where to look for inspiration other than the potential free-agent signing of Solly March that has been rumoured and even that is more in hope that he can sustain fitness than anything else.

Conversely, Norwich will be happy with their showing today having achieved exactly what they set out to. They turned us over with relative ease to compound our misery and give themselves something to hang on to as they look to turn their poor start to the season around.

Charlton 1 Norwich 3
Over to you.

First 20 minutes great. Same old after that. Jones has his ready made excuse with the disallowed equaliser but we’re lucky Norwich only got three. Time up Jones.

Really good first 20, press was excellent and had them on the ropes

Absolutely terrible 70 after that. So sloppy in possession, never seen Ramsay that bad with the ball. Koumetio and Coventry too had too many dodgy moments

We’ve lost the defensive solidity that made NJs brand of football tolerable. I fear we are lacking the quality to stay in the division.

I feel numb we are falling apart and Jones is oblivious to the problems he can't stay in this job if he doesn't change

A team devoid of confidence and ideas and that’s all to do with the manager.
    Only plus was Kelman .
    Pack your bags please NJ

Good to a gilt edged chance go begging in the first minute. If we had scored we’d have been dropping back 10 minutes earlier.

Can someone sit the staff and players down and let them know that a game of football lasts more than the first 20 minutes?
Outside of the start and a little period when we first went 2-1 down, we were awful. Proper bottom of the table stuff and that's the way we're heading.

One of the most pathetic, gutless displays you will ever see. Cannot forgive a lack of quality but not the lack of fight. That is a team that gave up. Every one of them can fuck off.

Expecting the "That's not us" interview response. Even though it is literally us every game now.

Kelman keeps his spot for me. Mesik regains his. Everything and everyone else needs to man the fuck up and own their performances.

Combination of bad luck, shite tactics and lack of investment.

    At least Millwall lost.

Amazing stat on sky, we’ve only let in two goals at home all season and was undefeated until today.

Okonkwos worst game to date. Lloyd also off his best.

Yes the disallowed goal did for us but we just drifted to sleep.

TC kept plugging away and didn’t let his miss affect him. JRC I thought warranted his place.

Can't justify how easy the defeats to the two other crisis clubs were back to back.

I don't really care about Jones anymore when the problem is clearly above. Sack him or dont, it don't make a difference when Billionaire Friedman and friends don't want to be here anymore and so dont want to put the money needed to compete.

I'd argue that offside changed it all and that was bullshit.
We were done dirty but that performance was still unacceptable.

CM needed a major upgrade this season, yet nothing’s changed and it keeps costing us.

Our once reliable Defence can’t keep clean sheets anymore either.

A desperate, unbalanced and wrong starting XI from NJ yet, no changes at HT when we all could see Edwards needed to come off and 3-5-2 was needed only for him to change it once they score. Very poor from NJ today.

After next Saturday it will be 10 without a win. Yes NJ can say if TC scores it’s 2-0, Leaburn and Kelman at Watford, TC late miss against Bristol City, QPR onside goal not given, header off the line at Burnley but ultimately our attacking play has been poor since we came into this league. Everyone misses chances, the issue is we barely create any and that doesn’t look like changing at all…..

Decent for 20 minutes then stopped pressing and descended into a shocking defensive display and Norwich did yhe opposite. Didnt see what happened for our disallowed goal so we'll never know if that would have changed the game or not.

Jones rings the changes but the performances remain largely the same. Not sure how this gets turned around.

    Well that, was fucking dreadful.

Jones will respond by dropping Kelman again and starting Leaburn
