Had an update this afternoon - Following discussions this week, Jones is going nowhere for now.

When I asked how long “for now” meant, there was no clear timeframe, but the feeling is that nothing is imminent over the next week or so.

This has been my operating modus operandi for a while, so nice to hear it from the source. This club has invested a lot in NJ, and I'm sure NJ has invested a lot in the club, and I think this is a case of both need each other right now.

This is an NJ squad, for better and for worse, and I don't think we're likely to attract a manager with a higher ceiling (and Prem experience, albeit unpleasant experience) than NJ has. I don't always love his football style, but I think we're in too deep with him and we would need some more really poor results and performances for him to go.

I think 'Boro are a free hit, just like they were last year. Jones has traditionally set out sides to defend deep and frustrate teams very well, and I'm expecting the same again from him on Saturday. Not expecting a result, but I think it could be the start of a "back to basics" campaign that will see us go back to a 3-5-2 with at least one (Danny Mac), and maybe two (Bell) defensive wingbacks for Saturday, and then Mesik to come in against Bolton. It won't be pretty, it'll probably be pretty attritional football at times, but I do personally believe NJ knows what it takes to keep this team in this division. Then maybe in January or next season we can look at adding players (in central midfield--6, 8, 10, and out wide) to be more expansive. Right now, it feels like we're caught between two stalls, and without Chalobah and an in form #10 we're not ready to play the ball on the deck through the thirds. So go back to what got us here/kept us up.

Again, this season will not be for the faint of heart, unfortunately. I doubt it will be pretty, fun, or even pretty fun, but 21st would do for me and then next summer there needs to be a much higher level of investment (I know we said this last year).

Hopefully Jones can get something out of Bolton and Sheff United we need 3 points minimum. I'd probably go back to a back 5 as we'll be a bit more solid defensively

If we don't get a win then it's probably time to try something else. Already seen some rumours of Pep getting his meal deal from Sainsbury's Charlton earlier in the week with Ben Mansford

We can’t be doing a back 5 for Bolton FFS…. We are the more experienced champ team. No excuses - just go out and play normal football and beat them.

Positive we will sit back still and try and nick a 1-0

Well we have a new CEO now so interesting times ahead
I think Jones has the next 3 games to get a win. If he doesn’t then he will probably be sacked.

If it happens I think Robbie Keane could be a name that comes up, and has worked with the new CEO before. He did knock back Preston recently so not sure if he’s keen on a championship relegation battle though
Struggling to think of bigger own goal than sacking Nathan Jones for Robbie Keane.

Our season could then become a three managers in one season and relegation disaster.

All well and good saying that in January or next summer we need to add a 6, 8, 10, wide right but we’d need to add quality and that costs and the current ownership has shown they are not prepared to spend big as is required. If the ownership doesn’t change I think you can forget any thoughts of expansive football.
  • But it isn't an impossible ask, Hull are a current prime example of how you make your team greater than the sum of its parts. There are lots of other examples in the PL and EFL.

No fans are expecting prime Barcelona stuff with our squad - we just expect the side to be able to complete more than 7 passes in 15 minutes of football at home against a side who have lost 5 on the bounce and show just a little ambition in the way we play.
Hull under their transfer embargo still had a much bigger player budget than we do. They already had quality, highly paid players before the embargo, they just weren’t allowed to pay a fee for any more. We really are competing with both arm’s tied.
Sorry I think you’ve missed my point. I’m talking about their strength relative to the league they are in currently. Not comparing them to us.

The point being you can have a very limited budget but find a way to be competitive and play to your sides collective strengths.

Back 5 against Boro is fine. After that we should be going back to the back 4, and if we are signing Solly March I’m sure that’s the plan

It's weird how regularly ITTV posters come on here for a short period, get aggressive on everyone and then flounce off in a huff when someone asks a clarifying question. What an absolutely bizarre use of time

Whether we like it or not we all know its purely a results business...a heavy defeat at boro followed by failing beat Bolton or Sheff.Utd will result in him being sacked. I don't think you can go into the next international break off the back of not winning in 12. I think maybe a win in one of those home games might save him, but I suspect if we don't pick at least one win in our next 3 he'll be a out.

That would give any new manager two weeks to work with most of the squad.

After the international we've got a tough away game at Wolves followed by a real must win against Lincoln at home.

December looks tricky for us in terms of fixtures...with a run of Swansea, Millwall, Southampton and Norwich!

Massively important they make the right call before the international break.

Now we might pick-up 4 points from the two home games coming up, then I think we'll be back on track but HAVE to take advantage of games like Lincoln and Birmingham at home and the odd win at somewhere like Blackburn.

Saw 5 of the first team out in China Town on Tuesday night, which I guess is fine - but wonder if NJ would be best pleased considering he banned them from going to Bluewater costa coffee, and considering we haven't won in 9. I assume we would have been training on Wednesday

They were catching up with Zheng Zhi. Who is now a manager in China coincidentally.

Saying that we’re usually much better against the good teams. I’d much rather defend knowing we’ve got that Keeper and defence  opposed to going at teams knowing what our front 6 is like

I’m sure the same was said on here after the Bristol Rovers, Crawley and Millwall games. He deserves the next 3 games to try and turn it around like he did on those 3 occasions
I don’t get this next 3 games, he’s had 9 games some against some really poor opponents and walked away being spanked by most of them and people just want to potentially throw away another 9 points playing boring terrible football when realistically we should be beating 2 out of the next 3 teams.
It’s more that there’s a big break after the next 3 games. So we can then do a proper recruitment process to bring in a new manager if needed

We should be beating Bolton, but not sure Sheffield United is a “should be beating” game. Compare our starting eleven to theirs and maybe 2 of our players would get in theirs. Most teams we play are simply much better than us player for player and Sheffield United is no different
Yet you think a new manager would make any difference with the current squad?

No I think we should avoid sacking the manager if at all possible, I can’t see us bringing in a better one than Jones in our current situation

If we lose the next 3 games though it will probably get to the point where it becomes too toxic and we’d be better off with a worse manager and a clean slate, rather than keeping Jones.

We just need to get a win next week to stop the slide, hopefully keep ourselves out of the bottom 3 until January where we can hopefully sort out some of our issues
