++Charlie Kelman signs on a 4 year deal++

We can say this but this was a man competing with Gyokeres, Simms, Wright for football, respectfully Leaburn Kelman Tanto TC come nowhere close to those lot and do keep in mind Godden managed to bag 6 in 7 games at the start of the year would be enough to be our top scorer for the seasonRothko said:and Cov moved on from Godden 18 months ago as he wasn't doing it in the Championship.1 -
Yeah because 6th in the Championship is a terrible place to find ourselves without Alfie May.golfaddick said:Oh dear. A striker being berated for not scoring goals. Whatever next. Perhaps we should have kept Alfie May.
Be careful for what you wished for.
As Nathan Jones says, I don't really care who is scoring the goals.
At present it just feels a bit of a tiresome argument about Charlie Kelman... have issue with it, when we need him scoring.
Makes me laugh as well when people say that the moment Godden is back, Kelman will be dropped to fifth choice Striker, I mean why is he not fourth choice at the moment then? - Especially as Jones decided to deploy him rather than Olaofe on Saturday afternoon.10 -
Or that they didn't think he could compete with them, for some on here, Godden is the answer to every problem this 6th in The Championship team has, and that the 4 fit strikers haven't contributed anything to that.Crispywood said:

I mean its a good argument to make about keeping Alfie May - After all even the team that broke the League One points record didn't want to keep him going into the Championship, and they sit four points behind us so far.Kinsella87 said:

Gyokeres left in the summer of 2023, Godden was there for the 23-24 season and started quite a few games.Crispywood said:

And that Alfie May would have gone anyways even if we wanted to keep him, he was offered a higher salary, fair play to him.ForeverAddickted said:

Might see Kelman and Godden together for all we know, Godden has the ability and intelligence to play others in. So not certain it will one or the other.6

If that gets going as a partnership, that would be lethal.Sword65pf said:Might see Kelman and Godden together for all we know, Godden has the ability and intelligence to play others in. So not certain it will one or the other.
Also, a lot has happened, but we are still only 12 games in, plenty of time left in the season for Kelman to get going.3 -
Charlton vs Southampton could be an interesting oneSword65pf said:Might see Kelman and Godden together for all we know, Godden has the ability and intelligence to play others in. So not certain it will one or the other.
Its after the International Break (when Godden is rumoured to return), and James Bree will be ineligible to play, could we see those two alongside each other at some stage, with Campbell in the Small Wing-Back role.
Although I still feel TC's issue to his form, is the fact that we need a Small type player out on the Right, because at the moment, teams can double up on Campbell without fear of being overloaded down the other flank. It can't exactly be a coincidence that others have felt that Campbell's form hasn't been consistent since the end of last season, which is when Small was injured, and then came back into the side himself without the same sort of impact.2 -
I keep stressing that, in moaning about Kelman not scoring, we are actually undermining what NJ and the team as a whole has achieved. Once again, he's started 8 games and had the game been stopped at 60 minutes (shortly before he's invariably hooked) we would have 19 points from those matches and not conceded a single goal. We're in sixth, not in the relegation zone.
It's not as if he's missing chance after chance and unless we want to pay £20m for someone Jaden Philogene, Kelman isn't going to beat three players and then find the top corner from 25 yards.
On the other hand we could pay £15m for someone like Jay Stansfield instead. But hang on, Stansfield scored 19 last season including no less that 9 penalties so net 10 in open play. Kelman scored 21 with just a single penalty so net 20 in open play.
Anyone want to guess the identity of the player who has created the most chances (no less than 30 in 12 games) in the Championship this season? Someone called Sorba Thomas. Remember him? He was the one that we wanted to buy on the cheap from Boreham Wood and their Chairman called us out for doing so. He went to Huddersfield for between £750k-£1m and Stoke then paid £2.5m for him. Here's the big question, though - if he's alone created 30 chances and has scored four goals of Stoke's 13 himself, then how come the rest of the squad only have nine goals between them? How come they are above us?
This time last year I suggested that we should re-assess NJ's position at the end of the season. I believe that we should do the same with Kelman. In doing so, it might be worth considering that last season he scored 15 goals in his final 20 appearances. Making him a scapegoat when we've scored as many as a team, as the side in third place and more than the one in fifth seems rather premature given we've only played 12 games and are doing a million times better than most thought we would.17 -
It’s a shame for TC, but we still really benefit from him being doubled up on. Bree is the main beneficiary and the reason why he gets more space is because TC has 2 on him most of the time, if we move the ball to the other side quick enough then Bree has more time and space to cross/shoot. The goal against Derby is the clearest exampleForeverAddickted said:

Our open play tactic last year and in August was all about creating 1v1 situations for TC and Small/Apter, with Godden and attacking midfielders ready to benefit in the box. This year is slightly different, if we can get TC 1v1 then that’s great, but if not then the space is created elsewhere for Carey on the edge of the box or for Bree on the other side. This is why a lot of the benefits of TC are unseen, Carey and Bree don’t get that space without TC occupying 2 defenders but people don’t see it because all TC is usually doing is getting on the ball and then passing it when 2 defenders are on him4 -

The Fotmob ratings are interesting, as they show that none of our strikers have done the business this season, and all feature on page 2 of the Charlton rankings. But Kelman is bottom, reflecting his lack of impact on games.

This is the possession won in the final 3rd stat per 90. Even on that stat he's well behind Miles and Tanto.

That's all very true as well actually, good point... Its easy to think that Campbell isn't doing anything on the pitch, but at the very least, he's ensuring that his pace is keeping two of the opposition partly occupied, so creates space elsewhere for others.NabySarr said:

Luckily stats don’t mean shit until you use them as a stick to beat players with, Kelman has scored one less than our other strikers. People can see with their own eyes that there is work to do, but can also see it is an improving working process that has us sitting in sixth. At this stage I’m more than happy with that because I know we will get better, it’s what NJ’s teams do. As others have said judge properly at the end of the season.killerandflash said:

I wouldn’t have signed Kelman for this system. Not his fault - he’s just not suited to it . Note some are bringing out the scapegoat word - he’s a striker that hasn’t scored for a lot of games but I don’t think anyone is blaming him for it .0

I don’t think it’s unfair to demand more from Kelman and same goes for our other forwards just because we’re sitting in 6th place.
We’ve started really well but with a better pair of forwards we could easily be sitting 2nd-3rd.
I know we’re a defend first attack later team so the defence will look better but even the defence is doing the forwards job as well. When your 2nd choice LCB has the same number of goals as your entire front line at what point does working hard not become enough9 -

He can develop into a player that fits the system. That’s what we spend money on at the moment, all our 7 figure fee buys have a lot of room to develop with us by playing at this levelwmcf123 said:I wouldn’t have signed Kelman for this system. At the moment his hold up and back to goal play is poor. In 2 years of working with us and playing in the championship, it could be much better. I doubt Godden was anywhere near as good in the air, holding the ball up and linking play when he was 23 as he is now later in his career1 -

Their goal was from a defensive error.
Why would any Charlton fan be happy if we were to get relegated?
He hasn’t got an assist yet has he?3 -
Exactly this, where could we be if he was scoring, and the two aren’t mutually exclusive he can still do the other work too.Crispywood said:I don’t think it’s unfair to demand more from Kelman and same goes for our other forwards just because we’re sitting in 6th place.

Imagine we actually had strikers scoring goals, according to some on here we'd be played 12, won 12, scoring 4 goals a game on average!3

Of course stats mean something, as they give a better picture of the overall contribution a player is making . And I deliberately didn't mention goals, as clearly none of our strikers would look good on that criteria.Sword65pf said:

Possession won in the final 3rd shows how effective strikers are in doing the dirty work of hassling and challenging defenders, and winning the ball back in dangerous areas. Looking up these numbers
Kelman 4
Tanto 4
TC 6
Miles 12
Or Recoveries
Kelman 13
Tanto 13
TC 21
Miles 22
Suggest that even on the workrate and harrying side, it isn't obvious that Kelman is more effective than our other options.
