MATCH THREAD [+POST P 28]: Charlton Athletic v Chelsea: FA Cup Round 3: Sat 10th Jan 2025

I think Mannion had a decent game in a match where, to be honest, ANY keeper would have had a fair amount to do. Not much he could have done about most of the goals, and to be fair not sure Kaminski would have done any better.
If we had gone into this season with Mannion in goal, you can guarantee he'd be getting stick and we'll all be asking to sign a keeper in Jan.
The stick Kaminski gets has been a bit unfair, and sorry, but Kaminski is a better keeper overall. Yes, he's our highest earner (or one of them), and made the odd mistake, but he's also kept us in some games.
From my perspective, overall, I feel more comfortable with Kaminski in goal than any of our other keepers.
The keeper situation is the least of our worries...I'm far more concerned about how we are going to replace Bell!

The plot thickens, are we saying it wasn't blocked ? And I have every sympathy for the club but apparently it's been mentioned on here that 'it's been the same for weeks' and 'has been reported to the club with no response' .SOTF said:

Whatever the timings Golfie, you shouldn't have to put up with walking through piss and whatever to use the toilet and this needs to be taken to the club to enable them to address the situation. I have some contact details that I found on LinkedIn, I will be contacting them to see if they are firstly, aware, and as one poster stated, he contacted the club with no response, and if they are aware how far are they down the process of resolving the issue. Do me a favour please, where was it ? What stand ? I would have to trawl back over the posts to find the details and as much as I love your posts, and I do, I have an email to contruct. Oh......and the club is a shambles. Toilet block in the AC stand had a floor full of piss. Cant use 2 of the cubicles or the far end urinal unless you want to be able deep in the stuff.
Utterly shambolic on & off the pitch.
I know you live on a different planet to most but thinking it was a 9.40pm KO is most peculiar
I have some sympathy for the club here. I doubt they knew that the toilets would block, and less so, that some absolute filth would wade through piss to approach an overflowing urinal and continue to urinate in it making the problem much worse. Some of them were actually laughing whilst watching their bodily fluids pour over the top onto the floor.
We’re not talking 1 or 2 here either. There must have been 20-30 people that did this in the time I was queuing for a urinal that wasn’t blocked.0 -
Think that the game really highlighted just how slow our central midfield is.
Coventry & Doc looked like they were running in treacle during the majority of it.5 -
I thought they both did well but this was a starting team with a value of over 350mil so you can't be too harsh on them.CafcSteve said:Think that the game really highlighted just how slow our central midfield is.

Wasn’t expecting them to dominate the midfield of Chelsea but I just think that it showed that we could do with some pace there.Bedsaddick said:

I don’t think the ploy thickens. The trough doesn’t run and overflows, forcing everyone to use the other (working) trough. Some people clearly couldn’t face / hold the 10 min queue for the other one so continued to pee in the overflowing one despite standing in puddles of piss.Bailey said:

I replied to a feedback form so I wasn't expecting a reply. I just hoped they would get a plumber in to fix it.
The urinals are usable before the game but fill up by the end.
Don't get me started about the lack of hot water to wash your hands afterwards or the one totally useless hand drier out of the two avaliable.
Maybe we could organise a race between someone trying to dry their hands using the above hand drier and someone queueing for a half time pint.1 -

TBH, issues such as the toilets, lack of hot water etc show that our club is NOT up to Premier League standards ...and why should it be for newcomers to the league below ( although health & hygiene should be top of all clubs' agenda)
This makes a mockery of the decision to organise a bigger, " better" but much more expensive version of the popular annual POTY dinner successfuly organised for the fans by the fans, in order to reach the standard of Premier League clubs ( as we were advised )
And there are rumours that the Advisory Board has been discussing several further issues based on PL clubs in order to present them to the Board, which may not be to the loyal fans' liking ....
Tip of a deep, expensive iceberg ?

Thanks Ant, I am sure someone will shoot me down for this but I'm not a fan of feedback forms, they don't guarantee a response and in my industry, they are more interested in the fact that they have followed guidelines laid down for providing feedback forms and crowing that they have proof of responses to those forms. As for the cold water, was there ever a reason that the club went this route or was it purely cost ?Valley Ant said:

I know we're all very surprised by Liam Rosenior's appointment but I have to say I've been very impressed with all his interviews since he got the job. He speaks well & is clearly confident in his own ability.....even if nobody else is.
It'll be interesting to see how he does1 -
To the contrary I feel his comments about emulating Ferguson with the class of 92 were foolish…I’ll give him 10 monthsGravesend_Addick said:I know we're all very surprised by Liam Rosenior's appointment but I have to say I've been very impressed with all his interviews since he got the job. You hope he does well simply as an English manager. There are far too few of them in the Premier League.3

Remember Ferguson was given a long time before the Class of 92 arrived.ct_addick said:

It'll be interesting to see how he does- 1986: Ferguson was appointed manager of Manchester United, who had not won a league title in nearly 20 years. His early years were difficult, with the team finishing 11th, 2nd, 11th, and 13th in his first full seasons.
- 1990: United won the FA Cup. This was his first piece of silverware and is often cited as the turning point that saved his career; he was reportedly close to being dismissed before this victory.

Back to the game, I found it was both interesting and depressing to see the difference in levels between the two teams. What impressed me most about Chelsea was not what they did with the ball, but how they worked without out. Structurally they were so organised, never out of shape, their press seemed effortless yet they always seemed to have 2-3 players close quickly when we had the ball. This led to us either turning backwards or prematurely releasing and conceding possession. The gap in fitness also seemed noticeable, particularly towards the end of halves.14

The fitness gap is the part I find most frustrating about that performance.
There’s no real justification for it being quite so huge. Fitness and stamina aren’t exclusively elite traits, a significant amount of that work comes down to conditioning, preparation and player ownership.
It was a bitter pill to swallow seeing our players running out of gas half an hour into both halves. Regardless of quality, we should be capable of sustaining intensity for 90 minutes. Losing the ball because of pressure or quality is one thing. Running out of steam is another alltogether.I accept the pace and technical gap. These are Premier League athletes versus Football League players and the difference in decision making is obvious too. Knowing when to press, when to drop, and when to conserve energy makes a huge difference and Chelsea managed that side of the game extremely well.
That’s where I see an opportunity, that decision making improvement could carry this side to the next level in this league. If we can get better at managing when we press and when we recover, and do it at the right times rather than reactively like Premier League sides do, it would bring us up a level compared to a lot of sides in the Championship. It won’t change the quality difference against elite sides, but it would help us stay competitive deeper into games against the better sides in this league. It doesn't feel particularly unrealistic for us to be able to achieve either.
I am sure we're working on it already, but it will be hugely beneficial if we can get better at it.5 -
The only thing I'd say is that the majority of our players have been playing week in week out, some are returning from injuries, some are playing through injuries, a lot of the Chelsea players havn't had much competitive football at all so I'd expect them to be fresher.Dazzler21 said:AFKABartram said:Back to the game, I found it was both interesting and depressing to see the difference in levels between the two teams. What impressed me most about Chelsea was not what they did with the ball, but how they worked without out. Fair point, a small counter would be that I wouldn't expect them to be as match sharp as we possibly saw a little bit.LargeAddick said:

Disappointing to concede two late goals - we seemed to capitulate. 5-1 is not a great scoreline.0

I am sure we're working on it already, but it will be hugely beneficial if we can get better at it.
Our system relies on fitness and the ability to last long onto games without conceding.
The problem is of course that we spend so much time without the ball chasing around, closing down, this is far more tiring than having the ball yourself.
Not helped by the fact that our cobstant hoofball up to Leaburn usually ends up in just giving the ball back to the other team.
We do need some class in the midfield to enable us to play through the middle rather than as above.
I accept this is not going to happen this season however.5 -

I accept this is not going to happen this season however. Thanks, it’s something that’s been on my mind since the game and probably brewing for the past month or so. Chelsea just felt like the first side to really expose it.
I think JRC is probably a step in the right direction for the kind of midfield we need. Players who can not only find passes, but also carry the ball through those central areas.
If we can trust players to look after the ball when we win it back, or at least find a positive first pass, it reduces the amount of chasing we do out of possession. That gives others the chance to recover properly or push on when an attack develops.
Chelsea were happy to jog for long spells without the ball and then sprint in short bursts when they needed to close space. We did the opposite: a lot of constant sprinting, followed by periods of jogging. Over a game, that difference that on the night really showed.

Spot on - the higher grade team (this happens in England matches when we're playing holiday resorts like GIbralter or Andorra) often wear teams out with possession and run up big scores towards the end - lets not forget that the prime specimens are in the premier league for a reason - they're not only more skilful, they are more powerful and naturally fitter.CharltonManor1966 said:

The gulf in fitness also manifests itself when one team spends the whole game chasing side-to side, trying to shut down gaps, while the other team lets the ball do their running for them. If games only lasted 45 minutes then the gap would be pretty narrow but anything over 60 mins and it starts to tell.....especially when the superior team can bring on up to five brilliant subs.
Also, part of the separation between a "top-player" and "also-ran" player, is the level of fitness to start with. At the top level, you get fitter by having to compete with ultra-fit players. You get fitter by training with and being measured against other top players...both from the opposition and those in your own squad.
Plus, in Charlton's case, we were chasing the game in the second half. The extra, often hidden, reserves of energy and will-power are more likely to kick-in when defending a lead, rather than chasing it against a team like Chelsea.1 -

I've just managed to watch the replay of the full game on Charlton TV (it wasn't available much sooner). I fast forwarded it to find the bit where we wern't given a penalty late in the 2nd half (it was just before the 85th minute. Lloyd Jones was in the box, Olaofe crossed the ball to him (a very good cross) and he was flattened from behind by a Chelsea player (Fernandez) who made no attempt to get the ball. Jones was in a good position to have a shot. Why was that not a penalty ?.1

Because he kicked the floor and fell over that. Fernandez did also make contact but Jones was probably going over with out it anywayCombeMartin said:I've just managed to watch the replay of the full game on Charlton TV (it wasn't available much sooner).
