What I don't want us to do, is make the same mistake that we made with Pratley, where we let him go because we still had Watson under contract for another year. Watson barely played the next season, then retired, whereas Pratley played 165 games for Orient.
We have a lot of strikers on our books, but I suspect that NJ's first choices at the moment would be Dykes and Godden. It would seem a bit odd to not keep them for another year, provided Godden finishes the season strongly, just because we also have Leaburn and Kelman.3 -
Of course. 🤦🏻♂️Scoham said:
We signed Dykes permanently until the end of the season, so no chance he goes back to Birmingham.ShootersHillGuru said:After this years relatively disappointing season for Birmingham, I can easily see them replace their manager and give the new man a war chest. Where does that leave Lyndon Dykes ? Probably won’t be in Brums plans and I’m thinking it’s likely he’ll move on. Definitely a player I’d like to see us sign but can we afford him ? Doubt there’s going to be a long queue at the top end of The Championship but I’d suspect that there will be a few clubs like us that might be interested. Even if we are able to get him in on a permanent or even another loan I would hope we’re looking for another striker as well. This seasons long lay off might have done Matty Godden some good but you still can’t forget his age and that injury. Leaburn, Kelman and Godden won’t be enough and I doubt it will even with Dykes.0 -
Dykes and Coady both fall into the category of being the kind of player we need but maybe not necessarily being the ACTUAL player we need. The roles they fill are very important but in an absolutely ideal world we'd be signing fresher and younger versions with a view to the longer term.fenaddick said:I really like Dykes but think the quality striker upgrade replaces him. Some fans won’t like it but he’s not worth having as a back up as it blocks the pathway for Leaburn who is cheaper and has higher potential resale value. I wouldn’t be annoyed if we kept Dykes but I’d imagine it would mean not signing another striker
I like both Coady and Dykes and they've been integral to arresting our slide and turning it around but sadly there's a real chance both would be diminishing returns over time3 -
Problem is you have 9 forwards to think about. Granted we know for a fact Ahadme isn’t good enough so we can write him off and Kanu can be very easily sold or new contract and loaned to L1 next season he’d have a lot of interest.killerandflash said:What I don't want us to do, is make the same mistake that we made with Pratley, where we let him go because we still had Watson under contract for another year. whilst Mbick with his season, Leaburn with how he’s progressed this season, Kelman with a proper championship year under his belt, TC if he signs a new contract and his unique skillset and Tanto we may be forced to keep if the right offer doesn’t come in
are they going to surpass Godden and Dykes sooner rather than later and that could convince Jones to think about the future opposed to current day0 -
Think even second season up you're going to need the nous and experience of Godden and Dykes. Invaluable to have around the squad and to bring on the likes of Leaburn and Mbick.
Kanu new deal and L1 loan , Ahadme and Tanto sold , not convinced we'll hold onto TC (not because I don't rate him, but I think we'll get some offers)
The creativity needs fixing more than the actual strikers themselves.

Dykes is 30. 31 in October and I’d say has at least another two good seasons, probably three at Championship level. Even if the last one isn’t as a starter. Godden is a difficult one. Injured most of this season and will be 35 before next seasons starts. Still looks sharp in what little we’ve seen of him but nonetheless a risk relying on him. Kelman is still an unknown quantity. Shows real glimpses of being good enough but over the season I’d say a bit of a disappointment. Miles hasn’t really kicked on and the injuries haven’t helped. Will Leaburn and Kelman be good enough to lead the line ? I’m not so sure. That leaves Mbick and Kanu who none of us know enough to judge whether they can make a significant contribution next season. Big decisions to be made about our striking positions.2

No chance we keep Coady, he's been great for us but unless he takes a massive cut we're not going to break our wage structure for him - he's supposedly currently on £37,000 per week at Wrexham (almost double our current highest paid player - Kaminski is on £20k a week).
Clarke's contract is up in the summer but with an option of another year... he will have other clubs after him if Ipswich go up (in which case I imagine they'd be willing to let him go, if they don't go up he might be in their plans). Would hope that he's happy with how things have gone for him at Charlton and seems to be a great fit - both on the pitch tactically and as a personality within the squad ...fingers crossed we'd have a chance of signing him permanently1 -
When is Coady contracted to at Wrexham ?0

Another year.ShootersHillGuru said:When is Coady contracted to at Wrexham ?
Although they have just paid people off etc before - they find it hard to move players on given they usually overpay for the division etc.4 -
So basically he’s staying at Wrexham unless they pay him off. Possibly loan him again. He’s just turned 33 so I’m guessing he’ll be wanting a two year deal but he won’t get anywhere near that Wrexham money.North Lower Neil said:

I’d keep Coady as a player coach, similar to Hylton last year!Clearly a good lad to have around, and would offer something.
Dykes the same potentially1 -
Dykes still has another 4-5 years of football left in him, Coady still has a 25k week Wrexham contract and wants to go into punditarysammy391 said:I’d keep Coady as a player coach, similar to Hylton last year!Clearly a good lad to have around, and would offer something.

Keep Godden for another year.14
-
Yeah basically. And Wrexham might be more reluctant to pay players off now - £1m+ is a bit different to 'let's give the guy we signed in League 2 the last £100k of his contract to piss off early and free up a squad space for the guy we want to sign for £2m.ShootersHillGuru said:

Coady also does coaching to be fair but I think location is the biggest hindrance to a deal thereCrispywood said:

This is the main thing for me. Other than TC are any of our strikers poor finishers? I don’t think so. If we create more chances they will score more goalsMarcusH26 said:Think even second season up you're going to need the nous and experience of Godden and Dykes. we'd have to spend serious ££££ to find a better finisher than Godden, just whether or not he can stay fit6
-
Love Godden, but if you told me we were signing a 35 year old who had spent 7/8ths of the last season out injured, I'd be sceptical.7
-
As this is a rumours thread I was told last night that a current championship top 6 club wanted to buy TC in January for £4M. TC was keen to go but it was blocked by the club. Lord knows whether true or not 🤔4
-
I think he'll be off in the summer given the contract situation, sure we'd rather get a fee now than lose him on a free the year after if he's not looking like he'll agree a new contract.801912601 said:As this is a rumours thread I was told last night that a current championship top 6 club wanted to buy TC in January for £4M. I do think if you stuck TC in a squad like Coventry (playing to his strengths and with quality all around him) he'd be extremely effective in this division.801912601 said:As this is a rumours thread I was told last night that a current championship top 6 club wanted to buy TC in January for £4M. Hopefully next season we'll be a bit more fluid going forward and it will help his game as well. He's frustrating as anything but if we're to create anything from open play it comes through him or Carey 9 times out of 10.

Improve the midfield so we make a decent number of chances per game and our forward line will be good enough.Crispywood said:
Has a year option he’s one I’m very 50/50 on think it all comes down to his wages, what our budget is like and do we see our other forwards having much better years. Could have Leaburn dykes and Mbick as target men options and Kelman Godden TC as the small poacher forwards and focus all the priority to midfield it’s a tricky one whatever we do there’s always an argument for the alternativeNorth Lower Neil said:

Seems a strange thing to say the week after such a great finish, but I could see him being released, given he's 35 in the summer and missed a lot of this season with injury.5 -
Surely Nathan Jones and championship recruitment teams don't know more than our fans who say he's shit?801912601 said:As this is a rumours thread I was told last night that a current championship top 6 club wanted to buy TC in January for £4M. Gavin Bazunu Is on loan at Stoke with an option to buy, would love for us to get him, great keeper.
2 -
He is not a great keeper at all, his shot stopping is absolutely terrible. He looked like he had a bit of potential when at Pompey but so far he’s not living up to it. I’d rather have Kaminski and Mannion than Bazunu, we need better if we’re bringing in a new number 1guinnessaddick said:Gavin Bazunu Is on loan at Stoke with an option to buy, would love for us to get him, great keeper.12 -
I can’t see us in the market for another keeper. I think the two we have are more than fine.NabySarr said:

You’re probably right, other areas of the squad will be more of a priority I’d assumeShootersHillGuru said:

Absolutely atrocious keeper. My Saints supporting mates reckon one of the main things that helped with their improvement was getting a proper keeper in instead of him. He kept 3 clean sheets for them in 19 games, got dropped for a pretty ropey backup and then was shipped out for a decent keeper who already has 6 clean sheets in 14 games. Bazunu got by early in his career by looking like a keeper who is good with his feet but when it comes to the actual goalkeeping he is absolutely rubbishguinnessaddick said:Gavin Bazunu Is on loan at Stoke with an option to buy, would love for us to get him, great keeper.5 -
Need another big turnover of players if we’re not going to struggle again next year especially in the midfield area , the players we have are just not good enough.6
-
Another reason I don't think we should be keeping Coady.Ruffdiamond said:Need another big turnover of players if we’re not going to struggle again next year especially in the midfield area , the players we have are just not good enough.
We need to improve that position, Coventry can be the backup/competition, we don't need both Coventry and Coady.
