We can't say it for certain but I think given the run ins that 48 points is the most a relegated side is going to get. Still need a few points to relax but we are staying up. We can then work out how we can improve next season.

Superb point , if only JRC didn’t play in deep sea diving boots we could have stolen all 3 points but 1 is a step closer to safety .
Mannion outstanding but most teams look a level above us attacking wise , a lot needs to change over the summer if we’re not to be in the bottom 6 most of next season but for now this has been a very successful campaign.

Pleased to have had that as my only away game of the season - a good day out in the sunshine.

The young lad facing penalties at half-time was a contender for man of the match, of course. He must have been watching Mannion closely...

I thought quality wise, Watford had some players above most we have played against. Good touch, vision, pace etc... Yet we had a much better XG than them and have taken 4 points from them this season. Still trying to work out why they are where they are in the league but maybe the answer is to be found in the previous sentence.

Came on the thread to mention the half time entertainment. That lad will never forget the many cheers given to him by the Charlton faithful whilst his own fans completely ignored him.

Well earned (and needed!) point. Irankunda is a monster, just looked outstanding and when he went down initially, I was dead chuffed he might have to go off!

Mannion was fantastic as already mentioned, really needed that after the Bristol game. TC started well but went to pot after that dodgy pass when they countered right after, definitely a confidence player!

Godden goal was a beauty. Great technique.

Overall, one point closer. Preston aren't doing great atm so they are there for the taking!

    Doctor Charlton to the rescue.
    ???

Very similar to what I was about to say. Mannion excellent, and was pleased to see him retain his place.

I’ve enjoyed watching JRC at times this season but those two chances today show how much we need to evolve (provided we stay up). The two chances are as good as you are ever realistically going to get at Championship level and were executed with such a lack of quality,
conviction and purpose. To be kind with the first one, he may have slipped but I can’t help but think he got a nose bleed from finding himself in that position and crumbled with the finish. The second one was so poor, and led to the least dangerous outcome for the opposition - if that was an opposition team on the break, most of us would be expecting a goal or a serious attempt on goal. As it was, he picked the ball up and strayed out wide rather than attacking directly with intent and purpose, and once all passing options had been exhausted restored to a tame, fairly resigned shot.

Staying up would be a massive achievement, the next step will be making a meaningful step up in quality and athleticism. NJ clearly knows that, and I have full faith in him delivering it

    A good point -

Very close now - I can't wait to actually celebrate survival.

We have the framework to perform better at this level - so many chances against Bristol and Wrexham as an example, away from home we are normally very good at keeping it tight and then nicking something.

It is clear though we need to spend or be very lucky in the transfer market to go up a level - I do like NJ's press conferences you can see he has the next wave clearly outlined in his mind - and we need to add some quality to achieve that.

Overall we want that one win - that pinched 1-0 win against someone slightly not at the races.

Godden's goal was great today and shows what he brings.

1 more win and we can all relax and enjoy the break.

Mainly down to the bottom 3 or 4 not currently winning games. We have been drawing or losing matches and they haven't really made a dent into the gap we made back in Feb.

What a goal from the God man!!
As I’d said on the match thread…

    The God’den has risen…🙌🐣
It was Jesus that rose from the dead not God, that's his Dad.
Technically, he's God as well according to the doctrine of the Holy Trinity ("God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit") according to my GCSE RE.
But It's all made up anyway  :o

A good point that we probably didn’t deserve but who cares. Thought TC had a good first half, faded badly second. Doc and Coady did ok, Carey much less so, has really gone off the boil. Back five pretty solid but thought Bell had one of his poorer games. Mannion was outstanding, so glad he was able to put Friday’s howler behind him. Dykes worked hard without much service. Godden showed what we’ve been missing, I’d give him another year for sure. JRC had a couple of opportunities to do much better and maybe put the game to bed. Decent cameo from Fev.

A good point, hope Coady is ok. Very good response from the Watford fans as he was taken off, it took that to wake them up. Our fans were loud all game and magnificent.
You make several comments that echo my feelings after today's game, Large.

I'm very unimpressed with Carey's performances of late & surprised that he is continuing to start. Maybe a game or two coming on from the bench might revitalise him ?

Lloydy back to his best, thank goodness, but thought Dykes had his least effective game for some time & would have subbed him sooner. Ditto for Chambers but like the cameos you mentioned from Fev. Also a fan of Joe RC & feel he deserves more minutes to show what he can add to the performance.

However, I would argue that Doc "did OK " fails to take account of the work rate & undeniable bravery he demonstrates every time he steps onto the pitch. IMO, we are a lesser team without him & the contributions he makes. Love him to bits !

Finally, as the majority of posts state, Mannion was incredible this afternoon. Unbelievable saves time & time again. Surely he deserves the gloves for the remainder of the season.

Oh, have just noted that Coady has been discharged & given the thumbs up ...phew !
Can't belive im saying this but agree 100% with Fanny on Doc.

In a midfield that is devoid of creativity it is functional on workrate. Whilst Doc doesnt do aalot of eye catching things, the amount of the ugly stuff his does off the ball taking up space, helping us keep shape, pressing at the right time etc is a large reason we have improvee defensively as a team and we arent getting cut through with easy through passes like the past couple seasons. Doc may be unappreciated but he is a large part why we will survive this season.

Don't look out of place in this league when we perform like that, though faded somewhat after taking the lead. Now if only we could score a second goal..
    What's one of those?

We were better today than Friday. But can’t help but think this an opportunity missed. I can’t remember where I read it but saw some expecting 6 points from th Easter games. 1 is a pretty awful result
People can write what they expect all they want, it['s irrelevant.  1 is poor whether people expect 6 or 0.

I would agree with this and that is why we need to keep him but if we are hoping to take the step forward he needs to be a squad player next season.

Lots of talk before the game that we could only be 5 points clear of the bottom 3 if results went against us.
So really pleased no one below us gained a point on us.
Mannion with a truly great performance and Godden doing what Godden does.
Really hope Coady is back soon as I prefer him than Coventry as a partner for Docherty.
Survival all but guaranteed now so that's a successful 1st season back in the championship imo.
Now need a few upgrades in the summer and we go again.

Coady was knocked out so isn't that 2 weeks out automatically due to concussion protocols. I wouldn't be surprised if he is out for the rest of the season as he has no reason to rush back.

Entertaining game and thought we were worth our point. If only we had a winger that could control the ball quickly, set it up and rocket it in the net instead of the high wide and handsome.

Mom... The kid in goal at HT in the penalty shootout, and to our fans who I have been critical at times due to their behaviour, who gave them the OLAYS and bowing and they responded accordingly.

I would gladly swap them for kamikaze.
  • I agree with Fanny's and others comments above about Doc next season.
However we can't have more than him doing the DM type with no pace or on the ball quality (eg him and Cov together).
So when we hopefully get some midfield players in next season, we desperately need power and pace and passing quality with the ball.
Not sure Carey or JRC will be enough?
Doc can then do his organising and covering stuff without it.
Good season though eh with what we've got?
NJ has got blood out of a stone this year and thanks to our January window we have likely survived to fight another season in the Champ.

Slept on it... Listen you might not thank me but get the contract out, put it on the table. Let him sign it, let him write whatever numbers he wants to put on there, given what he's done since he's come in... GODDEN AGAIN, man. He's doing it.

Must say I did like Vicarage Rd. Long time since I was last there and unrecognisable to then(when you had to walk round the allotments), but thought it’s a nice little compact ground . And certainly for away fans, good sight lines and atmosphere

As I said to my niece and her husband yesterday, Docherty is better when he doesn’t have the ball.

I swear we could go into the last game 6 points clear of the bottom three and there'd be people saying one more win and we're safe!
Are you suggesting that every 4 out of 3 people on here are shite at maths?
    So 0.12% of people then...😉

Agree re Matty's "Mendonca" finish, but they were so quick in switching defence into attack, they were  super quick and before we knew it there's 4 onto 3...= goal...

Considering Matty Godden has had a wrecked season it was great to see his excellent penalty area turn and volley smash into the net. He reminded all of us what we have been missing this season.
Kelman has a nice touch on the deck and did score from the same position in the box but to reach the standard of Matty, Charlie needs to improve to be our main striker. I still believe in him and I hope he learns from Godden.
My first thought was they need two to win because I knew we would drop so deep that Mannion would have too many bodies in the way and was amazed with the 9 excellent saves Will pulled off to help to secure a point and not 3 losses in a row.

Both Carey and Coventry have lost some form while Docherty TBF must've those special batteries as he is like road runner. Greg's passing is hit and miss but he is the original 100% player.

Whether you are a Billy mix ranter or have a composed demeanor like Callum surely all posters can see we  need more quality in midfield and out wide as our play in transition or in a counter attack is ponderous.

Pleased to see most posters have seen that it was always about staying up when they took the rose coloured glasses off for the first season back.
