St Georges Day

  • This is becoming more of an issue every year and until more parents speak up it will get worse. I find it a bizarre situation that other saints days are recognised and St.George's is often shunned. DA9 I would definitely speak to your school and ask for a full explanation as to why St.George's day can offend and other saints day's don't. I'm Irish and like the fact that my kids are looking at things about St.Patrick but have always been amazed at the lack of activity around St.George's day.
  • I'm going to Rules in Covent Garden for St Georges day. I'll be wearing my red socks & Red Rose, can't wait.
  • sorry GH, i sacrificed the sheep whilst celebrating hadj, the pilgrimage to Mecca, with my fellow followers of islam.

Don't blame me, blame the Angel Gabriel.....
  • I'm actually going to ask him if they have put this in writing anywhere, ie, letter to take home etc, if so, will then investigate my options.
  • Complain away DA9, it's ridiculous. As others have said, 99.9% of immigrants would have no problem with it, it's idiotic right-on tofu knitters who come up with this stuff.

If it were me I would also like to pin down the individual who came up with this idea and ask them personally where they are coming from with it. It reminds me of all the Health & Safety bollox we all have to put up with. Someone somewhere is the first to suggest banning this, or forceing you to do that, but the first we ever know about it is when it becomes law. We should be able to take these people to task, and have them explain their actions.
  • "99.9% of immigrants would have no problem with it" - What the fcuks it got to do with them anyway?

Silly people trying to ban it. Celebrating it would do no harm and banning it stirs up resentment and offence rather than avoiding it

My son's School will be celebrating St Georges Day as they do every year. Children are asked to wear red and white, the caterers do an full English Breakfast, etc etc.

    Have a look and have a guess why : - )

When I was a Wolf Cub many moons ago we used to have an Eltham District Church Parade on the nearest Sunday to St Georges Day for all the scouts, cubs, guides and brownies. I think the boys brigade and other such organisations joined in too.

Presumably such things are no longer allowed in the Socialist Republic of Greenwich?

I genuinely don't know having moved away many years ago.
  • All this pc nonsense sickens me, as has been said, its our given right to celebrate St Georges day and, I for one will be flying the flag proudly and no one will change that.
    When is it anyway?????

    Ducks for cover ;)

    Good question? Is it 5th December : - )
  • You would have thought it unlikely that people offended by English culture would move to ENGLAND.

If you ask them they will be flummoxed, I guarantee it. It is always someone else being offended on their behalf (usually white and too right on for their own, or our good). I have asked asian colleagues about this and they are truly mystified as to how people get the idea that they would be offended by the culture of the country they have chosen to live in.

Whoever is responsible for this misguided, divisive decision needs the f*cking sack in the interests of promoting racial harmony. As usual, PC bollocks does more harm than good.

    Only in England...

    Quality post.
  • Move to Newfoundland & Labrador DA9 - They get a day off there (usually the Monday closest to St Georges Day). They also get a day off for St Patricks Day and just to please everyone a day off on July 12th as well.

I love the idea of making 12th July a day off, I could get the bowler hat out of storage! :-)

Have just had a train journey on which a bloke (mid 30ish) harangued some young kids in the carriage for not speaking English, and that they should not 'speak their language when in England'. They were in school uniform and although they had been chattering ,as kids do, I hadn't even noticed it wasn't in English. This bloke stared at them and they (and the whole carriage) went quiet, but as we pulled into Redhill a minute or two later and I got up to get off I said something like 'Leave it out, mate they're only kids'. He went potty,' 'what the f***s it got to do with you'...........'They're not English....' ....They should be like us and speak like us' etc. At this point the doors opened and I 'escaped' the rest of his rage. on the way down the platform I saw the train conductor and told him about it just in case the kids were getting his verbals again. But what can you do when there's people like that about? Racial harmony wouldn't mean a thing to them!
  • An you wonder why BNP are becoming more and more popular. Disgrace This England St Georges day is the Best public holiday and chance to be patrotic.

Exactly. Politicians should spend less time slagging off the BNP and dedicate more time working out why people in this country feel they need to vote for them (not that I ever have/will)

What a big man taking on a bunch of school kids. Pathetic.
  • I moved to this country in the 1960's and was brought up on the values of "when in Rome, do as the Roman's do." I can't ever remember celebrating St Georges's Day and I think that was because no-one did. Neither was I forced into Divali, Ede, Hannuka or whatever else gets foisted on kids today because people who celebrated these were a genuine minority and those in positions of authority didn't have pandering left-wing guilt. I can't help thinking school is for schooling and learning about other people's cultures has it's place in a lesson and not an enforced observance of some "national" day. After all, it's not as if other cultures are forced to take a day off work and get pissed in the pub with those who celebrate St George's Day.
  • When I was at primary school at Abbey Wood back in' 51/52 I remember the school celebrating Empire Day, and we all walked round the playground with flags of the countries that the school obviously thought still formed the Empire. Presumably they had been doing it since the year dot and just carried it on after the war. I don't remember it happening after the Queen's Coronation of '53 but equally I don't ever remember celebrating St. George's Day either (except at home 'cos it was my dad's name!}.

Of course Canada still celebrates Empire Day (it's called Victoria Day but it's the same thing) - It's seems when it comes to holidays we're more British/English than the Uk.

Did you go to Alex Mcleod?

I did and we didn't celebrate Empire/Commonwealth day in the 60s.

My view exactly. The BNP are scum and will never have an real power but the other parties should be asking themselves what they are doing wrong that people even consider them.
  • Nice badge Henry - but surely it's offensive to dragons (and the Welsh) ?
    ;o)
