Essex win by 6 wickets with 6 balls to spare. Bopara with a match winning 81* but a combination of mid innings stutter and dropped catches meant Kent had chances to win and really should've taken at least some of them.

You can't drop Ten Doeschate twice and Bopara once and expect to win. I thought Bopara was excellent though, best batsman on show.

    Indeed, Brian.

Just back from the match & feeling pretty disappointed with the outcome but kamikaze fielding & an inspired Bopara was the difference between the teams.

Probably a decent match for Sky viewers tonight - that's a positive - but galling to be there & see victory handed to the Essex boys by Kent's inadequacies.

Men v Boys in some ways, and Essex had a captain that continually moved his field around during overs whilst RK 's men were static throughout IYKWIM. But what do I know about the finer points of the game ?

    Not impressed, I'm afraid.

I do agree Fanny, 190 should be defendable and the bowling from Griffiths and Tredwell in particular was poor. (I think Tredwell is a shadow of the bowler he was a couple of years ago and Riley is the future). As you say the fielding was particularly average apart from the run out by Adam Riley. I only saw it on TV but Doug Bollinger looked knackered, apparently this was his 7th successive day of cricket and for a fast bowler that is a lot. I think Kent need to give him a rest even though he is our best pace bowler by a long way.

  • There's a few pictures of Wednesday's game here: http://www.photoblog.com/Jarvo/2014/06/11/what-a-blast.html
  • Tied with Glamorgan tonight. Doug the rug run out last ball.
  • On another note, Northeast's form in the CC continues in the same vein as the rest of this season.

Out for 2 and 1 in this match he now has scored just 214 runs for 15 times out at an average of 14.27. That's not a small sample and whilst I recognise that he's done reasonably well in the T20, the fact is that his form in the four day game is very poor.

If the likes of Blake or Cowdrey don't get a chance in front of Northeast now they never will.

Well they had to do it eventually:

  • The Kent website is worse than Charlton's!

The article states Cowdrey replaces Northeast yet Northeast is still named in the squad beneath the article!

Yes I saw that too Len. Pretty hopeless really.
  • Looks like we will be competing for the wooden spoon at this rate in the CC Div 2. Looking for some sporting relief from Charlton's struggles, I'm not finding it with Kent CCC. Being taken apart by Glamorgan in the current CC game it seems. When Darren Stevens at 38 is one of our best with bat and ball it shows just how far we have fallen. I have hopes with Bell Drummond, Cowdrey, Riley and Billings for the younger players but there is a lot of mediocrity there and no signs of improvement. I do wonder if this is Jimmy Adams last season as coach.

It is frustrating but I think we just need two quality additions to the squad - in the batting department in particular - but we simply don't have the money. Cash rich Counties like Surrey for example can afford the likes of KP and Amla.

Stick those two in and we would be much nearer the top but with our finances that ain't going to happen any time soon.

  • 466-7 for a lead of 126 overs. Riley 4-126.

Given that Riley has picked up 4 wickets I'm surprised young Fabian's slow left arm hasn't been given an airing.

He's supposed to be quite useful and can't do a lot worse than the others (bar Riley) have surely!

  • Glamorgan all out 527 Riley 5-157.

    Kent 274 behind.
  • 3-1

    Golden Duck for DBD.
  • 8-2

    Fat Bob gone
  • We're good aren't we ;-(
  • 30-3

    Fabian out for 9
  • 137-5 at close and just 138 required to avoid an innings defeat.

Stevens 55* and passes 12,000 First Class Runs in the process.
  • Well done, Stevo !

If only we could clone him.....
  • Will soon be all over. 164-7. Stevens out for 60 and Billings out for 14.
  • 263 AO Lost by an Innings and 11 runs.

50 from Adam Ball (to follow his 42 in the first innings) the only bright aspect of the morning play.

Agree riches help but kp is only here for the t20 and honestly from A Surrey point of view he's done very little.. I'd much rather play one of our kids coming through as there are 3 or four that look like they could be stars! As for Amla done very well as you'd expect but only here as a replacement for Smith and not said to be on high wages..

Having said that big names bring big crowds!

I also think though that the right overseas players can bring a boost to the dressing room and help our younger batsmen especially.

When D B-D, Northeast etc for help they look at Rob Key and all he can say is "I average 16 this season so don't copy me!"

  • Another abysmal performance against Sussex last night. Bottom of the table battle with Derbyshire starts tomorrow, defeat and we are likely to be propping up the table. With only home cricket at Canterbury and nothing in West Kent, any thoughts of travelling 50 miles to Canterbury to watch the dross being served up have dissipated for this season.

Indeed, Brian. Looks like our weak batting was the problem again.

I wouldn't class myself as a glory "boy" but with entry for the 2 of us costing £50 , plus petrol , and with away games with Charlton on the horizon, I'm not sure whether we'll be making any more T20 games this season.

  • Despite a ton from DJ B-D we finish the first day in the CC match against Derbyshire with just 259-8 having been 240-4.

Unlikely that we will add to the two other occasions this season that we have posted more than 300 ;-(

    Chuffed for D B-D though.

    Well deserved.
  • Yes, well done young man.

Pity more of the "established" players couldn't help him out in attaining a decent total.
  • An almost respectable 333 AO thanks to Ball (30), Bollinger (19) and Joseph (29*).
