Kent selected for four TV games Kent selected for four TV games Written by Steve Wolfe Monday, 25 February 2013 10:15 No Comments Kent will be on our TV screens at least four times this summer with Sky having announced their schedule for the forthcoming cricket season. Sky Sports will show 60 domestic fixtures this summer, with each county being shown at least three times.
The first chance Kent fans will have to see their side on TV will be when they face Nottinghamshire in the Yorkshire Bank 40 game on Wednesday May 8th with the game at Trent Bridge set to be a day/night match.
Just a week later and Spitfires fans can see the side in action against Worcestershire in the YB40 game under the lights at Canterbury.
Kent have also been selected to be shown twice in the Twenty 20 with their first game on Sky to be against Essex at Chelmsford on Monday 8th July with the game against Hampshire to be broadcast live on Monday 29th July.
Paul King, Sky Sports’ cricket executive producer, said: “2013 is the year that cricket takes centre stage with the ICC Champions Trophy in England followed by back-to-back Ashes series and the domestic game has a chance to ride on that wave.
“Hampshire were the limited-overs kings last year but there will be a number of sides who fancy stealing that crown, while the championship will also be closely fought. We can’t wait for it all to start in April.”
In addition to watching Sky Sports on TV, viewers will be able to watch all of the aforementioned matches on Sky Go, which allows customers to stream the footage on laptops, computers, tablet and mobile devices.

Kent have signed former Somerset all-rounder Calum Haggett for the 2013 season. Haggett represented England at Under-19 level but his development was interrupted when he was diagnosed with a leaking heart valve in 2010. He didn’t play for Somerset at all in 2012 and spent the final two months of the season playing in Kent’s second team.
"Calum has impressed with consistent performances for the second XI last summer, finishing the season with a major contribution against Leicestershire with both bat and ball," Simon Willis, Kent's high performance director, said.
I used to go and watch Kent quite a lot, back around the times of Julian Thompson, Ealham, Headley, Dravid, Nixon, etc. Was lucky to see some great opposition players as well. I loved having a runaround on the pitch before and after too.
Bit of a shame I'm fallen out of touch with it, though I'm on a self imposed ban after waking up in the wrong town minus a Blackberry the last time I went.

Kent County Cricket Club have announced they are looking to submit plans for retirement homes overlooking the ground.
The club revealed they are working with McCarthy and Stone to provide the homes after dropping plans for a hotel and gym.
They said a developer could not be attracted to the scheme after extensive marketing.
The homes would be a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments with communal facilities and gardens.
A pre-application consultation will take place in the coming months before a planning application is submitted.
Jamie Clifford, chief executive of Kent Cricket, said; "We are pleased to be announcing the start of work on these exciting proposals.
"The club, after considerable efforts to generate interest, has concluded that the prospect of securing a high-quality hotel developer is extremely remote.
"McCarthy and Stone are a leader in their field, and I hope that we can look forward to a seeing a high quality scheme developed."
Miles Willshire of McCarthy and Stone said the homes were aimed at elderly residents wanting to remain active in later life.
He said: "We are committed to engaging with the local community and club and will be offering residents and members the opportunity to meet with the project team to discuss early proposals."
Cool, I'll try and make more of an effort this summer, am always looking for ways to fill my weekends after May.
My bad, RedPanda.
Don't remember this guy, I'm afraid.
He was a good player - fast bowler, but as he was training to be a doctor his season only really began in June and his career was ended early by injury plus I presume better career prospects.

I think he had one really good season when he picked up 60 odd wickets. He wasn't bad at all and quite useful with the bat too in a good lower order kind of way rather than genuine all rounder.
As you suggest his medical career was always going to take precedence.
The Kent second XI games that were scheduled for Beckenham have now all been switched to Maidstone as Kent has effectively shut down the Beckenham operation for the time being and made ground staff there redundant as a cost-cutting measure.
Whether that is temporary or permanent and whether they will go back as and when (or if) the housing development scheme gets under way, we will have to wait and see. LBB gave outline planning permission more than a year ago but not a brick has been laid so far and nobody seems to know what the future holds. I don't think the finalised planning application has even been submitted and I'd guess we face at least two or three years with no Kent cricket at Beckenham.
It's a real shame for Charlton-supporting cricket lovers who have always turned out in force at Beckenham but find the Canterbury ground too far away.

That's a shame, as for large amount of the Kent supportbase, Canterbury is quite a trek, and a long way to travel for a short T20 game. Indeed the reverse evening fixture at the Oval (July 26th) looks more convenient. Perhaps Kent needs a form of Valley Express to bus supporters in from all over Kent to Canterbury...
Kent open pre-season with a draw WRITTEN BY STEVE WOLFE THURSDAY, 28 MARCH 2013 21:49 NO COMMENTS Kent’s opening pre-season game with Hampshire ended in a draw when bad light came to the home sides’ rescue.
In what was the first match action of the season, both sides agreed on playing 50 overs per side at the Ageas Bowl to be played under Championship conditions with whites on and using a red ball.
Playing in two hour sessions just like it will be in the Championship, it was Kent that batted first posting a respectable 144 for 5 with both Daniel Bell-Drummond and Mike Powell looking in impressive form.
Fielding was less than hospitable for either side with bowlers and fielders alike donning hats and gloves to counter the less than spring like weather.
Hampshire were never really in the game and when the bad light descended on the ground at Southampton, Hampshire were 91 for 9 with Calum Haggett and Adam Riley having taken a couple of wickets each.
Haggett was the twelfth Kent player to have taken to the field with both captains agreeing extra bowlers could be used for the game.
The two sides return to the Ageas Bowl in Friday for the second game which will be a 40-over match in coloured clothing with a white ball, played to Yorkshire Bank 40 rules.
It will start at 11am and there will be a 30 minute break for lunch at approximately 1:30pm but no tea.
A 20 year lease from Kent Cricket is a condition for the final approval of the OUTLINE planning application. No lease, no approval.

Jamie Clifford on BBC sport…not a word about Beckenham!
Kent Cricket is receiving yet another £ 1 million loan from the ECB. After a disastrous 2012 financial year Jamie Clifford the CEO of KCC is borrowing more money only to cover the losses and interests to be paid for the previous loans; 1.5 million from Canterbury Council (January 2012) + 4 millions (November 2009). The total borrowing is now in excess of 6.5 millions.
Meanwhile, Jamie is also launching an appeal to raise 4 millions in order to rebuild the Woolley stand at Canterbury St Lawrence ground.
Jamie must have studied at a Greek school of economics. You borrow a lot of money to show off some prestigious developments and then borrow more to pay the interests and more until the whole scheme goes badly wrong and collapses.
Who is now paying for these elementary “mistakes”? The tax payers and even worse, the employees of Kent County Cricket who will be made redundant.
From Jamie Clifford himself: “Ultimately though, the business cannot sustain annual losses and as such, we need to review how we are operating. Now under way, that review will look at all potential cost-saving measures which will include staff resourcing levels”.
cheers MOG. Unfotunately, it seems the only way for counties to be successful nowadays is for them to be Test match venues. Its only Somerset that seems to be able to buck that trend, but they seem to be able to nurture home grown talent such as Trezza,Kies,Hildreth and Buttler - and also, this season you will start to see the Overton twins come through . On that score, it will be interesting to see how Topley does for Essex this season - i think he could become one of our best quicks of all time, and may well be taken to the Ashes in Oz next year, Also, Essex have got another left are quick who is coming through, who's name escapes me for the time being.

As you suggest his medical career was always going to take precedence.
Got an email from Kent saying the Surrey match usually played at beckenham is now at canterbury.
however there might be some second eleven games at beckenham
hope this helps and MOG might be able to tell us if there is any first class cricket at beckenham also
Whether that is temporary or permanent and whether they will go back as and when (or if) the housing development scheme gets under way, we will have to wait and see.
Don't feel sorry for him, He thought it was a good idea to buy a bottle of red wine and drink it within 5 mins.

Kent’s opening pre-season game with Hampshire ended in a draw when bad light came to the home sides’ rescue.
Kent 144 for 5
Hampshire 91 for 9
Result – Match Drawn
Kent Team: Key, Bell-Drummond, Nash, Powell, Stevens, Harmison, Jones, Coles, Davies, Thomas, Riley. (& Haggett)
Hampshire team: Carberry, Roberts, Dawson, Vince, Wheater, Bates, Rouse, Wood, Briggs, Tomlinson, Griffiths. (& Querl)

Some news at last:
What a shame for cricket.
