  • My brother told me that Best Marigold hotel whatever its name was was a fantastic film. Watched it on the plane going on holiday last year. Was waiting for it to get good for ages and then it ended. Was like having your teeth pulled! He couldn't stop laughing when I told him I watched it!
  • Not out until June, but well worth looking out for: Joss Whedon's "Much Ado about Nothing". Filmed in 12 days at his house with a bunch of his actor friends...very, very good. It was the closing film at Glasgow Festival, and a notch above everything else we'd seen. Audience was rather geeky, as Whedon was there in person and has a bit of a cult following!
  • watched Hunger Games last night and enjoyed it but thought it could have been better as I felt a bit underwhelmed at the end. Didn't feel like the film was going to be part of a trilogy.
  • Any of the film buffs on here seen Cloud Atlas?

Love the sound of the concept

Saw it last weekend at the Glasgow Film Festival. It is a bit bonkers and sure to divide opinion. It is great value entertainment - three hours, six story lines. The time didn't drag at all. Actor James D'Arcy introduced it - his advice was good, to let it wash over you without worrying too much about how it fits together - that will all be clear by the end. The actors playing multiple roles - incuding across gender and ethnicity - has come in for a bit of criticism, and does "get in the way" sometimes. Tom Hanks is Tom Hanks (a bit irritating in my opinion), pretty good performances from Halle Berry, rather strange cameos from Hugh Grant, but I would say Jim Broadbent steals the show. Overall would recommend it - certainly different from any film you will ever have seen. Mr W would quite happily go and see it again tomorrow.

Oh, and predictable that the critics would pan it, as one of their own kind comes to a rather sudden and sticky end!

Interested to know what others on here will make of it.

wont see the movie .. having read the book, Mitchell, the author tries just a little too hard .. IF you know what I mean ???
  • Saw Wreck It Ralph over half-term. Cracking film. The daughter enjoyed it too but probably not as much as her Dad did lol.

Wow - that's brilliant! You weren't at the screening in Glasgow, though, I take it? JW certainly came across well at the Q&A, and asked us all not to say too much about the film ahead of the full release - obviously thinking of you! He is the first director/actor there to have overtly had his own "minder" in tow! BTW, have you seen my old pal Anthony Lapaglia recently?

  • Argo - great film.
enjoyed it 100x more than Lincoln.

Lincoln last weekend. Didn't enjoy it. A bit too 'dry' for me. I was surprised because Spielberg was the Director and his other films have been alright.

  • To the Wonder.

Can any film buffs explain this one for me?

Not at all, was a wonder I sat through it. Not even Ben could save it.

  • The Hunter with Willem Defoe. Well recommended.
  • Argo - great film.
enjoyed it 100x more than Lincoln.

I enjoyed Argo but then did some research into the events behind the film. In the film the Americans came out as the ones who instigated the rescue with the Canadians playing a supporting role with the British and New Zealanders refusing to help.
In real life it was the Canadians who effected the rescue with help from the British and Americans. It was agreed to house the Americans in the Canadian embassy because it was the safest location for them. The New Zealanders actually drove those to be rescued to the airport! And there was no dramatic car chase up the runway.
I have a real problem with the Americans rewriting history in a way that gives them the credit for everything. It was the same with the capture of the Enigma machine.

  • I've been a very dutiful husband recently and have taken Mrs Davo to Life of Pi, Lincoln and Les Mis. Life of Pi ok for the screenplay and effects and Lincoln good for DDL's performance but both are too long and a bit sleep inducing. Les Mis was an excellent film though, and Anne Hathaway superb as Fantine. Apparently she is only on the screen for 18 minutes but she is spellbinding and you can see why she won an Oscar for it.
  • Saw Oz this evening. Good start, dip (should have been cut by 10 mins at least), then decent end. Ties neatly into The Wizard of Oz. Mila Kunis looked beautiful, but was as grumpy and miserable as sin - must have had a bad day or is just plain grumpy!

Masterpiece for me.....loved every minute of it, I actually felt a bit depressed the day I saw it and I came out smiling. I really enjoyed all of the characters, Broadbent did steal it though and Hugh Grant's Cannibal was really rather good for him. 40 Minutes in, and I did wonder where it was going, but by the end I didnt want it to finish. Brilliant film, fantatsic cast and loved all the cross gender characters....Hugo Weaving at his very best doing a sinister Nurse Cratchett impression.

Im seriously thinking of going to see it again, and I hardly ever watch a film a second time.

Thats 3 great films in three weeks or so...Les Mis, Zero Dark 30 and this.

I enjoyed this one too.....saw it on Fox the other night, much better than expected, but I did get the impression that there would be a follow on.
  • Went to see 'Life of Pi' last night. Seriously over hyped in my opinion. The 'fantastic story' was just a bit dull really, I found the central character rather irritating and the 3D brought virtually nothing to it (if this and Avatar are the best things you can do with 3D then it is surely doomed to be a fairground attraction). Glad we used a buy one get one free voucher on it as I'd have been pissed off to pay $32 for it. Especially after we paid just $3.50 each to see the brilliant Argo a week or so before.
  • Have i missed Lincoln and Zero Dark 30 at the cinema, or have they not come out over here yet?
  • Watched Wrong Turn 5 last night. Big, big fan of the franchise but I think it's time to put it to bed. Very much a 'meh' experience.

Been out for around 5/6 weeks now. You'll still catch Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty is most likely gone.
  • Thanks Siblers.

I wasn't in Glasgow as I was away in La Manga playing golf. I haven't seen Anthony for about a year - he'll be in Cannes, playing in goal for my team though! Joss is very good - he may come back over for the UK theatrical release in June.

  • a Royal Affair - The Best film i have seen this so far this year. Highly Recommended.

Lens flare. Water. Handheld close ups. Lens flare. Repeat. I don't know if anyone 'gets' Malick but personally, I don't want to! Good review here:

Jimmy can I just make it abundantly clear that I don't have any flares!

Flares in a cinema!? Sure, why not? It's only a bit of fun!
  • Watched The Hobbit on my flight to Florida. I had read and heard reviews saying all the back story stuff bogged it down but I thought it was as tight as the first LOTR. I can't understand why all the sniffy reviews said it was boring as I thought it kept my interest all the way through. Would love to see it on the big screen though and I can't wait for the next installments. Also saw Life of Pi and End of Watch which were both enjoyable although I much preferred the Life of Pi book as you can't replicate the images on screen to those conjured up in your head when reading the book. End of Watch was brutal and a worthy addition to the LA police flick genre.
  • cant wait till the summer for alpha papa
  • Watched The Sweeney....Ray Winstone was his usual tough guy self and made a pretty good Reagan.....but chavy voiced "Im a white boy talking like a black boy" George Carter was a spoiler for me...good if not predictable plot, but well worth a look.

The House at the end of the street.....reasonable film but again was a little bit predicable

Oz, The Great and the Good.....really enjoyed this, the totty was top notch (Michelle Williams is gorgeous) and the highlight of the 3 D version was the water Nymph, made me jump!......Good harmless entertainment.

Deadfall.....A bit dissapointing....Im a big Eric Bana fan, but his far south accent was pretty unnecessary...Olivia Wilde and Charlie Thunnam were pretty good though.

Beasts of the Southern Wilds.....strange film but oddly intrigueing.....young Quvenzhané Wallis was outstanding.

Arbitrage....not a Richard Gere fan, but this film was surprisingly very good and indeed he played a good part too.

    The Apparition.....Horror Yawn fest.

My Week with Marilyn.....didnt fancy this, but what a good film it turned out to be.....another wonderful performance from Michelle Williams who played a very good Marilyn, and another good performance from Eddie Redmayne too.
