[cite]Posted By: Chris_from_Sidcup[/cite]Another HUUUUGE crowd there on saturday as well. 13,333.
Still does this number mean anything to you? 8,858...........it was the attendance at the final home game at the valley before you had to leave. You must have really pulled out all the stops that day ;-)
If you looked at attendances for all clubs around that time i think you'll find every clubs would be thousands lower than today.
Averages for that season - Arsenal - 28k, Chelsea - 21k, Man Utd - 42k, Newcastle - 29k, Us - 6k, you 8k.
I went out for a friends birthday drink last week, living in SE23 I'm always coming in to contact with either Palace or Millwall fans. As we were having a few beers a mate of a mate, who I'd never met started going on about Palace, turned out he was a proper season ticket holding, dyed in the wall, Holmsdale sort. As soon as I realised he was a Palace supporter I told him I'm Charlton and we had a pretty decent chat. He was actually quite pissed off with all the people turning up for the one game, he had a lot of time for us Charlton fans as he couldn't see many turning up to watch to watch Palace if they went down a league.
Since then, Palace have lost another game. Even though I like to see them suffer, I really don't want them to go out of business.

[cite]Posted By: Bermuda_red[/cite]I think the 8,858 was close to capacity due to closure of East Terrace.
Capacity was 20,000 ish if I recall.
Not sure how that was calculated but there was 9k seats plus the two small terraces.
Our gates were poor then but the 8858 was a big increase on the previous home gate of 6637 against Crystal Palace and more than double the game before that (4045 v Middlesboro)
So just under 9k looks bad now but was double what we were getting for a run of the mill game.

But in the 80s I remeber Arsenal getting gates of under 30k. Football wasn't the fashionable passtime it is these days. 8000 would have been a reasonable gate for those days
Crystal Palace average home attendances around that time ? in the same division ............. 1984/1985 a massive 6,440 and 1985/1986 6,787 Noades would have been pulling one off for 8,858 :o)

A far cry from the 51,000 that watched the team of the 80s get promoted v Burnley some 6 years earlier. Palace clearly have a massive fair weathered fan base.
BTW pre E terrace closure capacity was 20K, Valley capacity at time of last game was below 10K.

A lot of neutrals were at that game - including myself and a load of school mates.
I remember a hell of a lot of Sunderland fans being there supporting Burnley as they would have gone up if Palace hadn't won.
Just had a telephone call from the administrator's secretary.
They thanked me very kindly for my written offer to purchase CPFC (2000) Ltd, but felt that the 5,000 Nectar points and a curly wurly were insufficient to satisfy the larger creditors enough to agree a CVA.

Yep not a great crowd at all, hard to say exactly why it's that low, Portsmouth also played in front of many empty seats.........I don't for one minute think it's because they no longer care but more that it is all simply beyond there control, as it is for us, the last time we were in admin, there was a belief the fans could make a difference and have a say, this time that does not seem or feel like its the case.

'Son of' with due respect Your comment re last day at The Valley is misguided. The majority of us were not informed or aware we were leaving the Valley until we were in the ground for the game.

I was there as well that night, and it's true there were a lot of neutrals there, as for the Sunderland fans, sorry but I can't remember seeing too many of them.
However of the crowd that were there, neutral or not I think it would be fair to say 50k were there to see Palace win, there were also several thousand unable to get in.
However the biggest shame, is that you didn't see the light that night, and pledge yourself to the Palace.
The comment made about most not knowing about the move to Sellout is absolutely true in my case. Completely taken by surprise. It was the days before the internet or Fanzines of course. Even if indiviuals knew about it there was no way to rally the fans at that time.
All this who's got the biggest willy stuff is a interesting from the wind up perspective but it's possible to select information to present a different perSpective depending on which team you support. Palace did have a larger regularly attending fan base in the 1970's but that was on the back of being in the top flight in 1960's. Prior to that we had a much larger fan base who regularly attended including crowds averaging over 40,000 in the late 40's. If you take away the Sellout and Hamster years, we have grown our attending fan base beyond that of Palace but I would suspect that is due in large measure to the Premier League years, plus the work done by Airman Brown in respect of the Valley Express. I reckon though that if you did a poll of everybody in the UK and asked them if they supported Charlton or Palace, the numbers would come out pretty even.

Their expecting a better offer? Fools.

CWs were meant to be the "chocolate bar" of the '70s!

Do you think you'll still exist if you don't go up?
Whats the sound of a one armed man clapping in a forest, or maybe a Park
