Jazzy, I don’t think you’ll be happy until we all set fire to ourselves and run into the centre circle as a sign of devotion to Charlton. You need to understand that just because the atmosphere is great when we’re hammering teams away it’s never going to be the same at home. I don’t know how long you’ve been going home and away but think about it mate, pretty much every away game we go to, the “home” fans are equally as quiet, if not more so, as at the Valley. It’s a reality across the country – everyone’s got a ground they went to and thought “wow-the atmosphere’s unbelievable here, I wish the Valley was like this” but in reality, it was probably a one off and if you went back the next week that atmosphere would likely have dissipated.

In terms of atmosphere, home games are like sh**ging your wife, plain and dull but you’ve just got to get on with it – it’s your bread and butter. Away games are like sh**ging your beautiful mistress – fun, exciting but can never last.

And it is a capital I when referring to yourself ; - )

As opposed to a small "i" when referring to someone else - hope that's all clear.

I bet that puts the cat among the pigeons..........or is it amongst ?

In the words of David Pleat "it is up to the team on the pitch to inspire the crowd and generate an atmosphere - not the other way around"

Henry, how does the fact that I sing Abba covers in old peoples homes (which I do for free by the way) make you not tone deaf?

ps. The old peoples homes are my favourite gigs...

With all points considered, i think actually i could be just wanting to much after all.

I guess also I am wrong trying to make others be as vocal as me, so I honestly will not try any more. Over & OUT!

Was up in Birmingham the weekend and I got some free tickets for Birmingham v Chelsea. At Andrews is supposed to be one of the loudest grounds you can go to.

Well Chelsea outsung birmingham up until Birmingham scored. Then the place really started rocking. But had Birmingham not have scored that goal there would have been no noise from the home end. It's not just us and no matter how many threads are started on this it's not going to change noise levels at the valley

Yes i can actually agree with this 1, as i had a free ticket for a West Ham away match a few weeks back (2-2) They was indeed very quiet (MUCH more quiet then us) but just like you say, when they scored that place was very loud.

I just wonder are we that loud when we score? to be honest....no. But i suppose at least we start singing from the get go (only if its half of the covered end)

Na were not as loud as them after we score. But what I did notice after looking around the stadium when they scored was everyone was singing. It wasn't just the odd few crowds around the stadium. It was old young men and women. What surprised me was how poor Chelseas fans were. They outsung Birmingham up until the goal. After that didn't hear a thing

Yes, good point. Wouldn't it be really great if we had all stands singing.

i think ditching the cafc cafc chant would be a step forward - like trying something new with your wife like watching porn - before you know it the valley will be a cauldron and the wife's begging for it up the wrong un.

I think if you want to sing throughout the game you tend to gravitate to North Upper. You will never get all stands constantly singing. I did sit there for a season and hated it (just didn't suit me). People were there for the crack (no not drugs although the odour of wacky baccy was never too far away). I wanted to sit and watch the game but sitting was not possible for much of the time- indeed there were usually more people than seats in the area. There was a fan I nicknamed 'monkey man' who ran along the back of the stand banging the corregated wall like a chimp giving me a headache - there were the drinkers who couldn't stay put for long without needing a top up. I felt for the poor steward who drew the short straw and tried to get them to sit - it was painful to watch like a lamb to the slaughter. To me this was pergatory but these fans generate what atmosphere there is at the Valley and are very important. I accept this and support the team in a different way- my way- mostly financially - but I'll clap, cheer and boo opponents and happily give the ref a hard time. Our differing matchday habits may seem alien to people who approach games differently but we do all have one thing in common - a love for our club. Nobody should criticise a fellow fan IMO - the people who pay their money and show up are the lifeblood of the club, whatever their preferences in the way they choose to support the team.

Unfortunately, since the introduction of all-seater stadiums, the atmosphere at grounds around the country has taken a huge dive. You just can't generate any atmosphere when everyone is sitting down; people just revert to behaviour associated with watching TV or going to the theatre. It's just modern human nature. Even the Kop at Liverpool is a pretty tame place these days. I miss the atmosphere of watching football while standing.

you're right, and if someone is getting on your nerves throwing toilet rolls or rustling their crisp packet too loudly you could just move

The atmosphere must have been sh*t, I didn't even hear the Adams Family song!

Playing the drum at the valley is like making love to a beautiful woman but repetitively banging away doing the same thing week in week out....

There's a lot of posts hear along the lines of "I don't want to sing all the time", but that's mising the point. As March SNR said earlier, it's the cries of "Parky out", the sense that the booing is imminent, the effing and blinding when things don't go our way. It's a poisonous atmosphere at best, and a non-existent atmosphere at worst!

It's not about it being flat. I can handle flat, although it's not ideal. But the vitriol... the anger... the frustration.. it's horrible. The OP ade a really fair point, and I back him up 100%. And I don't care if he can't spell or use quote boxes!! I'm a website editor, and even I can't figure this site out (which is a failure of the site, internet fans! Not the user).

    Well said Jimmy.

The walk out at Brighton after the 3rd goal seems to have done the trick. To be fair, people can and do react how they want - the football at home matches has been bloody hard work to watch most of the time this season and they know they will be supported and praised if things are going well and crticised if they don't. The crowd and team bounce off each other and to just have positive noises from the crowd would be unnatural. I sit in the north upper and its not a problem biut i guess it's maybe different in the west or east when personal attacks can be clearly heard?

If you have to tell users directly how to use the site, then yes, someone, somewhere, has failed. Miserably.

*edited in an effort to sort the quote box out. Case rested!!!!

Having paid taxes down the years so people like you can get IT degrees can't I at least expect to see some sort of return?

Getting the quote right maybe a little thing to you but your posts are so hard to read anyway that anything you could do to improve them would be much appreciated.
