Still disappointed with our bench, although it wasn't required yesterday. Only one of Hughes or Cort needs to be on there, Hughes being my choice due to his versatility. Kermongat gives us the target man option to replace Hayes more than Euell does. Green when fit gives us an attacking option, with Waggy the fast paced frontman to play up front if we need to change it around up top. The other place, bar Sullivan, would go to Evina for me. Another attacking option on the left wing, allowing Jackson to move inside, and he gives us a defensive option too. Shame Evina himself, Bover or Alonso didn't get a place yesterday with Pritchard injured.
Cort has to be on the bench as Hughes' versatility doesn't stretch to centre back. Evina instead of Hughes for me.

Think we're going to have to start leaving Sullivan out of the sixteen as it's rare that a sub keeper is needed and if need be, we have a replacement of sorts in Taylor. A great bench to have would be:

Evina (covers the whole left side)
Cort (covers centre back, and right back with Morrison moving out wide in a defensive reshuffle)
    Euell (covers central attacking areas)
Green (covers right midfield, but also in behind the strikers)
Kermorgant (strong target man who's good on the ball)

Once Green forces his way into the XI ahead of Wagstaff, we could replace Euell in the matchday 16 with Sullivan if necessary as Wagstaff covers every position Euell can and more. And that's not even considering Alonso, Pritchard, Doherty, Benson & Francis. Competition is high.

wIth 5 subs, youshould be able to confidently name a keeper amongst them. There is a enough versatilty

amongst the remainding subs at our diposal to cover any eventuality. imho  of course@

What are the rules on the subs? Am I right in thinking that sticking a keeper on the bench as one is mandatory?

With five subs I would choose - Sullivan as the spare gk, Evina (covers left-back and left midfield) and Hughes (the latter can cover right-back, centre-back and defensive midfield), Euell or Green as the attacking midfield option and either Benson or Kermogant as the reserve strikers.

I thought that was one of the best games I've seen for a few years - apart from maybe p'boro (away) last season - never felt that we were in trouble, even when they got a goal back and now just waiting for us to steamroller a team 5 or 6 nil.

I'm not the only one then that thought it was Waggy who got tripped & booked for our pen shout - never in a million years did I think it was Taylor. Waggy was def fouled for the build up for their pen - I sit in the East stand and it was right in front of us.

As for the bench conumderum - although a sub goalkeeper is hardly ever needed I think if you have 5 subs you can easily accomodate another 4 players - so  (currently) I would have Sullivan, Evina, Cort,Green, Kermorgant.

I'd now be happy with 2 draws away from home - 2 wins and I think i had died & gone to heaven.

There's no requirement to have a sub keeper on the bench, it's just that most clubs do it. I agree with those who say we don't need one, a sub keeper is so rarely needed it's a waste of a space on the subs bench, and we have Taylor if worst comes to the worst.

I could be wrong but I am sure it was Southend away when we didn't name a substitute GK and we did get an injury and it was Steve Brown that when in goal for us and he did he keep a clean sheet?? I think we went on to draw or win the game?

Just watched the 3min highlights on the FL iPhone app and they didn't show the foul on Waggy or our shout for the penalty...

Here we are... thought he did so there may not be a requirment to name a GK

No love for Ben Hamer? I thought he was brilliantly calm in the second half when Chesterfield were coming at him. He only had one poor kick, with the rest of his distribution being spot on and he;s very good at sitting on the ball and waiting for the team's shape to return. Not a game changing performance but I was just really impressed with his maturity at the back when the rest of the team seemed to have lost the plot a little.

I'm not happy about the penalty appeal being turned down mostly because the ref is accusing Matt Taylor of being a cheat. Of all the people on the pitch, he's the one I'd least expect to go down falsely to win a pen and booking him for diving just seemed insulting. However, the injustice definitely spurred the players on and seemed to wake us up a bit so I guess it levelled out. Cheers ref

Mixed thoughts on the game etc.

Great first half we could have easily been 4 goals up. 2nd half didnt like the way they seemed to control the midfield for 30 mins at all. It worries me that better teams will do this and really punish us.

    Solly continues to impress,

Thought 22,000 for a 3 level game is a very good effort and the peeps who put the graft in deserve a big pat on the back.

Yan was impressive in the short time he was on.

They should defo of had another pen pre the one they got and how the ref though that was a dive for ours god alone knows. Rubbish a CBack just about to shoot and dives ----- no naffing way at all.

At the end of this month we will know how good this team is----------------- at the moment how can we not be well happy that we are still unbeaten in the league, top of it and 3 points clear of the 2nd place?

Dale Stephens was immense first half. League 1's Stevie G
Agree with this - there are lots of reasons why we are better than last year but for me, he is the single biggest difference. Never panics and always looks to create. I think our problems in the second half are more due to the fact that Hayes doesn't seem to have twp halves of football in him and we stop threatening. Hopefully now we have Kermit we can give the forward line a boost once things start to flag. Get this bit right and i think we'll start to really smash teams.

yesterday was the best I'd seen him play and I thought he deserved a clean sheet.

Real plusses are our obvious qualty and we also have good strength of character. Only worry is our regular habit of letting sides back in after we have won a won a game and almost have to win it twice ( lets not pretend we had a dreadful 25 mins).

Next week is massive 6 points and there'll be no stopping us - 0 points bit bump - be happy with 2 or 3.

Perhaps it just took him time to settle? I'm glad he seems to be improving and he's still young, especially for a keeper. Hopefully more to come!

Thought BWP looked a bit disinterested today if im honest, not up to his usual standards. Yes I know he scored.

Really fustrating how we sit back so much but on another day it could have been 5 or 6-0
Funny how people see things differently i thought he was awesome and worked his socks off for the team.

I agree with you on BWp -had an excellent game

It seems people have their pre-conceived notion of BWP and are loathed to change it. I thought he ran hard all game, but there was one ball where he maybe could have moved quicker to pick it up and a lot of people round me started moaning about how lazy he is. I think he'd have to play in every position on the pitch at once, score 30 goals and save a penalty all in one game for people to cut him some slack in that department

Talking of some people moaning about laziness, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw people in the East Stand berating Wagstaff for being unable to stop that ball running out of play in the 89th minute of the match. He'd been running his socks off the whole match...

And that Football League show footage is an absolute joke. The only non-goal footage they show is the Chesterfield non-penalty (it wasn't) and the hoo-ha over who was taking the penalty. Nothing about us other than the goals, which they kind of have to show. W**kers.
Can't but agree with this.  For several weeks running they've shown nothing of us but our goals, but have shown misses and disputes that the other side had.  I suspect that the Beeb has some policy of being unbiased and giving every team a fair share of the highlights.  The trouble with this is you get a false view of what the game was really like.

I've seen several posts like this on here, and I'm really not sure where its coming from.   I can remember this argument being a real issue when the rule was three subs, and I had some sympathy for it then.  But if you think back to what it was like last time there was a five sub rule there was nearly always a dedicated keeper.  I would be absolutely amazed if the number of squads from any team that didn't have a dedicated sub keeper was anything more than 1%.  And why was this the case?  Because it is such a specialised position you need someone that is not only naturally quite handy, but someone who practices day in day out.  That is not going to be any of the outfield players; not Matt Taylor, not Steve Brown nor anyone else.  Four subs is quite sufficient to cover all of the outfield positions.   We need Sullivan on that bench each and every match.

But then you have to make two changes, and you're forgetting that keepers can easily get sent off, much more often than they're injured.

I don't have a big issue with the bench.  I think it's a tad cautious, but Kermi changed the look a little yesterday and it's not as if our bench has cost us points. It's up to those outside the 16 to force their way in, or to take their chance when injuries and suspensions offer it. That said, assuming fitness, my bench would be Sullivan, Cort, Alonso, Kermogant and one of Evina or Green.

Late posting my views about Saturday but I've got to agree with the majority.  A first half perforcmance that could have seen us 4-0 up with few complaints led into a difficult opening period of the second where I felt we were tempting the obvious comeback goal for most of the first 20 of the half.  Funnily their goal sparked us into action and we never looked under threat after that.  The Taylor penalty claim was an absolute joke.  Echoing most on here, he's not got the subtlety to take a tumble in the area, looked stuck on in the East.  Glad BWP grabbed a goal, was a constant threat even if everything he tried didn't come off.  The lad is quality, even if he wasn't looking for a chance plenty went through him.  Agree on JJ as MOM, constantly available and showed all his experience throughout and grabbed a well deserved goal.  This team have the ingredients for a promotion team.  There's two tough games coming up next week, but with Taylor and Morrison at centre half I'm not worried anymore about giving silly goals away! First time in a while I can think that! Also, a word about Hayes, he clearly divides opinion, but anyone watching can surely see how important he is to the team.  BWP clearly loves playing with him, he offers so much creativley even if he's not a 20 goal a season striker.  As soon as the h/t whistle went though he looked knackered, which is worrying.  Hopefully with Kermit putting in such an impressive cameo it will up his game in the latter stages.  Great win, and a great crowd.  Felt like a much better atmosphere than Exeter last year, maybe the result helped! Hoping a substantial amount of the new followers will be back sometime soon.

In summary, great result, only downer being that we didn't start playing second half until they came back into it.  In Chris Powell we trust and this will be remedied on Tuesday!

Not much to add that hasn't already been said except that we are only going to get better as the season progresses. This team has only had eight league games together and is really still in it's infancy. No other team in this league had the massive turnover in personnel that we had during the summer and yet we are already looking as if we have played together as a team for ages. That only bodes very well for the future.

The next two games will really show how far we have actually come. Unbeaten after them I'd be really happy, four points or more and I'd be ecstatic.

Just watched the goals on the player ....What a great set of goals... lovely awareness from Hayes for the first and training ground routine for the second and a cracking third with several involved and an intelligent headed finish, into the ground leaving the keeper no chance..

Great to listen to the game, the crowd sounded fantastic, like a proper club again, the depth of sound, must have been fantastic to be there ...

Overall looking very good, and Im pleased Powell wasnt satisfied and game them a rollicking after the game for taking the foot of the gas.. he wants us to put teams to bed, be properly out of sight so that we can all relax a bit .. nice ethos..
