2007: Darren Bent signs for Spurs. The fee received £16.5m, was £6.5m more than the previous record set by Scott Parker's transfer to Chelsea. For some reason though after shelling out all that money 'Arry didn't seem to like playing him; with judgement that poor perhaps it's just as well he never became the England boss.
1906: Ralph Allen was born. He played just two seasons for the Addicks, but helped win promotion on both occasions scoring 48 goals in 54 appearances. 1937: Montreal 0 Charlton 4. Last game of tour where Charlton won 12 of 13 games scoring 72 and conceding just 9. 2011: Rhoys Wiggins signed a 3 year deal from Bournemouth. He went on to make 44 appearances in our promotion season, only missing Rochdale at home and Preston away (both draws). Named as left back in PFA L1 team of the year.
1977: Steve Gritt signed. 435 appearances for the Addicks, four years as joint-manager and many other jobs. Gritt is currently chief scout at Bournemouth.
1956: Gerard McCarthy signs. He then went AWOL for five days. His career at Charlton never really picked up. He played just four matches in the 1956/7 season, we lost every one of them. At the end of the season we were relegated. He played no matches at all the following season and at the end of that he was transferred to Limerick City. I wonder if we've had a player with a worse record than played four; lost four; relegated. The following seems to be harsh but true:
There was a young man called Gerard, Who never tried very hard, He went missing one day, We wish he'd stayed away, As he was our rivals trump card.
1971: Ray Tumbridge signs as an apprentice. 48 games in the mid seventies. 2010: Alan McCormack and Gary Doherty signed. Our worst day for signings ever?
It would have been really nice if, to give us a few second's respite from the doom and gloom on the other threads, there was a big Charlton triumph to celebrate. Unfortunately, this is the most significant thing to happen on this day -
1983: Leeds seek winding up order. Inland Revenue join in. Charlton given 17 days to pay a total of £180k.
1991: Lennie Lawrence leaves Charlton to take on the managers job at Middlesborough. Against all the odds he got Charlton promoted to the top flight whilst in exile and kept us there for four seasons.
1983: Duncan Horton signed on a non-contract basis. He played just one game for us. On the same day Robert Lee signed his first professional contract. He would go on to play 343 games and score 65 goals. Scorer of the last goal at The Valley before the exile. Nine years after signing, Lee would be sold for £700k. Money that was needed to pay outstanding taxes and other expenses at the time the club was looking to return home.
1901: Birth of James "Jimmy" Oakes. Left back who played 234 games for Charlton. He holds a record for being the first (only?) player to play for two sides in the same fixture having transferred to Charlton from Port Vale just days after representing them in an abandoned match against us. 1989: Dale Stephens born.
1936: Ray Crawford born. A league winner with Ipswich, Ray joined The Addicks for £12,500 in 1969. He scored 7 goals in 22 matches for us, but his contract ended prematurely after missing training. Over his whole career he scored 290 goals in 470 matches. 2011: Fitness coach Lawrence Bloom signs for us from Southend. The fitness levels of the team in his first season were superb and helped us to win the league by such a high margin. http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/9136666.print/
1964: Mike Salmon born. Bought from Wrexham in 1987 for £100,000, Salmon played 175 games for the Addicks before damaging his knee ligaments in a match versus Man City in 1998. Andy Petterson took the gloves for the next three matches before, perhaps surprisingly, Saša Ilić took over the custodial duties. Charlton won promotion that season on the back of 12 Ilić clean sheets. Poor old Mike only ever played one more game, on loan to Oxford United.
1966: Jimmy Seed died. Arguably Charlton's greatest ever manager and certainly the most successful: The only manager to lead us to two successive promotions; the only manager with whom we won a major trophy; the manager who led us to our highest ever league position. As a player, Seed had earned 5 England caps and had scored in a 5-1 friendly against Belgium at Highbury. Sadly, he died exactly a fortnight before a younger England team won the World Cup.
1982: Paul Walsh transfered to Luton in exchange for £250k and Steve White. Walsh played exactly 100 games for the Addicks scoring 31 goals, he's frustrated Charlton fans ever since with his ambivalence towards the club. Walsh's name regularly comes up in football quizzes because he played in Merseyside, Manchester and North London derbies. No one seems interested that he played South London derbies too, against both Palace and Millwall. White only stayed with the Addicks for one season, scoring 12 goals in 31 appearances before moving on to Bristol Rovers.
1969: Joseph Jobling died. 222 appearances in the glory days of the '30s. Later an official scout for the club. 2007: Amazingly we managed to get £680k for Dennis Rommedahl from Ajax.
1936: George Tadman signed for £1,000 from Gillingham. 50 goals in 93 appearances. How many strikers can boast a better return than that? It is a better strike rate that Hales, Leary or Flanagan.
