1936: Harold Hobbis plays for England v Belgium 1991: Last 'home' game at Selhurst as Charlton Reserves beat Millwall 3-0 (The Vinh Nguyen, Dean Dye, Rosario Franco)
1923: Seth Plum becomes the first Charlton player to win a full England cap. England beat France 4-1 in Paris. http://www.englandstats.com/matches.php?mid=134 1925: Hans Jeppson born. He scored 9 goals in 11 matches for The Addicks in 1951. Not bad for an amateur. 1998: Jamie Clapham own goal gives us a 1-0 victory over Ipswich in the play-offs.
1985: Lee Harmsworth plays his last of three matches for the Addicks. A bad day away at Maine Road. 2002: Drew 0-0 with Man Utd at Old Trafford. This was Chris Powell's 500th league match and Scott Parkers 100th in league and cup. 2011: “Charlton's summer of rebuilding begins”. Four players released: Lewis Perkins (now ?); Alex Stavrinou (now Cray) ; Tamer Tuna (now Erith); Ross Worner (now Aldershot)
1894: Joseph Filliston born. He got six goals in his first fifteen matches for The Addicks, then lost form and ended up on 8 from 30 before being released. 1967: Colin Appleton played the last of his 29 games for us as we beat Birmingham City 1-0.
1972: Steve Brown born. 283 matches for the Addicks. 1998: Sean Newton scores against Ipswich to send Charlton to Wembley. Birthday boy Brown is on the bench. Sasa Ilic equals a club record with his 9th concecutive clean sheet.
1983: Charlton stave off relegation on the last day of the season by beating Bolton Wanderers 4-1 who were themselves relegated. 1987: Charlton's first ever play off match. 0-0 at Portman Road.
1900: Baden Herod born. He played 236 times for The Addicks, mainly at left back. 1979: Man Utd make a £750k bid for Mike Flanagan, he declines the move preferring to stay in London. 1980: Mikel Alonso born.
1933: Jimmy Seed appointed to role of Secretary/Manager. 1987: Two goals from Jim Melrose are enough to beat Ipswich 2-1 to put Charlton into the Play-off final.
1925: Alex MacFarlane starts his first stint as club manager. Within one year Charlton had to apply for re-election for the only time in their history. Things did get better in 1928/29 though when he became the first Charlton manager to secure a league promotion. Taking the Addicks up as champions over second place Palarse by a goal average of two. The report from Colin Cameron on the last game at Fellows Park sounds exciting: "When the whistle was blown by referee Capt AJ Prince-Fox, hundreds of Charlton fans rushed on to the pitch... Many more supporters went to Paddington Station to await the team. When the players finally reached Charlton Station, the neighbouring streets were impassable because of the throngs of fans". Reports that the Charlton fans spent all night chanting "We kept the Palace down" are probably exaggerated.
2006: Ian Dowie released by mutual consent from Palace. Eight days later and very controversially he was unveiled as our manager. 2007: Chris Powell released by Watford. A little over a month later he was taken back on by Charlton as a player/coach without a hint of controversy.
1923: Harold Miller becomes Charlton's second England International and the first Charlton player to score for England as Sweden are beaten 3-1 in Stockholm. Although now counted as a full England international by the FA it was at the time agreed that this match was unofficial. 1963: Charlton win 2-1 at Fellows Park on the last day of the season to relegate Walsall and save themselves from the drop on goal average.
1951: Dick Tydeman born. Bought following the sale of Hales to Derby, he played 178 games scoring 7 goals for us. Later played for Chatham, Dover, Bromley and Canterbury.
1901: Wilson Lennox born. 44 goals in 78 appearances including, in 1929, five goals scored in an away match at St James Park, Exeter. 1937: John King born. 67 Addicks matches in the mid sixties for the previously Leicester man. 1946: Bill Robinson signed for £1,000. Forward in our FA Cup winning team.
1987: Peter Shirtliff scores 2 extra time goals to beat Leeds 2-1. Charlton become the only top flight club to have successfully defended their status via a play off final.

1987: Peter Shirtliff scores 2 extra time goals to beat Leeds 2-1. Charlton become the only top flight club to have successfully defended their status via a play off final.
1921: Charlton elected to the football league along with Aberdare Athletic. Charlton had finished eighth in the Southern League the previous season. That might not sound impressive enough to warrant inclusion in the league, but six of the seven teams finishing higher were actually the second strings of established league teams; only Boscome F.C. (who changed their name to Bournemouth and Boscombe two years later) were an independent team in their own right.
1928: Derek Ufton born. 277 appearances for Charlton. 148 first class matches for Kent. 1947: A 3-1 win over Sheffield Utd at Bramall Lane (Hurst, Fenton, Duffy). The latest day in a season that Charlton have played a match. 1976: The Who get into the Guinness Book of Records for playing the loudest ever gig. Recorded at 120db from 50 metres.
1960: Joe McLaughlin born. A club record when he was bought for £600k in 1989. Just 37 games later he was sold to Watford for half that price. 1965: David Campbell born. That's David Campbell the late-80s midfielder, not David Campbell the late-70s centre half. Possibly the only two Charlton players to share a forename and a surname. They even have the same middle initial.
1909: Henry Wright born. 42 appearances as goalkeeper. It might have been more but he was unfortunate enough to be at the club at the same time as Sam Bartram.
