1949: Paul Went Born. In his day he was "the most expensive player not to have played in the first division" with transfer fees between us Fulham and Portsmouth totalling almost £300k; this in the late sixties/early seventies. Played in several positions for The Addicks scoring 16 goals in 178 appearances.
1969: Popular hate-figure Darren Pitcher born. Here's what Colin Cameron says about him in The Valiant 500: "Everybody admires a fighter and it would be impossible to find a Charlton supporter who is not delighted at the success of Darren... What was admirable about Pitcher was his attitude, patience and determination to improve his game". With the benefit of hindsight though the view of many Lifers is somewhat different.
The least flattering picture I could find, which came with the caption, Pitcher now works in the building trade. (BBC, 2001)
1970: Dietmar Bruck signed for Charlton for £11,100. 62 Addicks appearances for the defender who turned professional for Coventry in '62. Is he the only German to have played for us? 1997: No joy for new Hudderfield manager Peter Jackson as Charlton win 3-0 at the McAlpine thanks to goals from Mendonca, Brown and Robinson. Perhaps he should have stuck to film making.
1977: 30,706 people, Charlton's biggest crowd for about 8 years, watch Charlton beat Spurs 4-1. McAuley opened the scoring for the Addicks on just 2 minutes, but the home fans had to wait for the next goals; a Flanagan hat-trick in an 11 minute spell near the end of the second half. Here's a Spurs fan's take on it, including a clip from Panorama. 1982: Alan Simonsen signs for a then club record £300k. It would be the best part of a month before he made his debut though.
1983: Charlton 1 (Hales) Man City 0. With the club facing a winding up order and the chairman facing bankruptcy many feared this would be the club's last game.
1948: Albert Uytenbogaardt signed from Cape Town. He only made 6 first team appearances, being kept out by Sam Bartram. In 1950 he managed to score a goal for "Charlton A" though. 1987: Covered end uncovered in the hurricane.
1936: Charlton's biggest league attendance at The Valley. Officially 68,160 to see Charlton v Arsenal, unofficially closer to 80,000. Sadly the wrong result on the day. 1983: Winding up hearing brought by Glicksten. Club given until 7th November to find necessary monies. 1991: Michael Smith born.
1962: James Loveridge born. Played just eight games before his contract was cancelled. Only 5'8” - I guess he was just too short. 1985: Curbs gets a brace as we beat Brighton 5-3 away. Perhaps that's what convinced them to get him in a Nobo shirt a couple of years later. Our other goals came from Shipley, Lee and Flanagan.
2002: Charlton 1 Middlesborough 0 (Euell). Watched by 50 members of the Former Player's Association and live on Sky. First win at home for 7 months. According to The Grauniad, "Chris Powell celebrated as if the title was in the bag".
1918: Chris Duffy Born. Scored the winning FA Cup goal in 1947. 1953: Derek Ufton becomes Charlton's first post war player to be capped by England. 4-4 against the Rest of the World at Wembley.
Derek is seen here in the back row third from the left, next to Alf Ramsay and behind Stans Matthews and Mortensen. England's trainer, our own Jimmy Trotter, is on the far right.
1960: Charlton 6 Middlesbrough 6. An almost unique scoreline. Goals from Edwards (3), Werge, Leary, Summers. 1980: Darel Russell born. 2 goals from 11 appearances. Now at Pompey. 1991: Yado Mambo born. Yado has had seven different loan deals since signing on professional terms at The Valley. He's been to Welling United, Dover Athletic, Staines Town, Eastbourne Borough, Staines Town (again), Ebbsfleet United and is now at AFC Wimbledon. Is this a record? He's also played four times for Charlton's first team, scoring once in the process. Unfortunately that was for Shrewsbury. 2011: Charlton put the disappointment of Stevenage behind them by embarking on a 6 match winning streak, starting with a 4-0 victory over Carlisle. Goals from Kermorgant (2), Wright-Phillips and Hollands.
1976: Charlton 3 Sheffield United 2. Hales nets in his eighth consecutive game (7 league 1 league cup). In all he scored, 14 goals in those eight matches. 1991: Ben Davisson born. 2010: Roller coaster ride against Carlisle. 3-0 up just after half time (Jackson, Anyinsah, Benson). Then 3-3. Then an injury time winner from Benson.
1925: George Armitage wins his England cap v Ireland in Belfast. This is remarkable as he was a Third Division player at the time. Despite the fact that Ireland was separated in 1921 and that many websites claim that the the match was against Northern Ireland, the team England faced was actually named Ireland and claimed to represent the whole of Ireland. This despite the existence of a team representing what was then known as the Irish Free State. Armitage's cap is also remarkable because it appears to be reported erroneously in The Valliant 500 which gives the year as 1926, whereas other sources give 1925. Armitage died at an early age next to railway lines at Aylesford in 1936.
1919: First ever first team game at The Valley. Beldam and Kingsley get the goals in a 2-1 win over Chatham in the Kent League. 1986: Just 9 seconds into the game against West Ham Melrose becomes Charlton's fastest ever recorded scorer. Charlton go on to win 3-1 (Melrose, Walsh, Person). Poor old Tony Gale ;- )
1905: First mention of Charlton Athletic in the Kentish Independent: An appeal for friendly matches. 1934: Ralph Allen scores twice on his debut as Charlton beat Clapton Orient 2-1. These were the first of a record 32 goals in one season for Allen. 1956: Charlton born Brian Kinsey's debut at home to Newcastle. The first of 418 appearances for The Addicks.
Hopefully Charlton will get a good result at Wolves today, because our current record for this date makes quite depressing reading. We've only won 3 out of 15 matches and the last 7 have been straight defeats: 1984: Barnsley 0-1, 1987: Bradford 0-1, 1990: West Ham 1-2, 1998: Leicester 1-2, 2001: Liverpool 0-2, 2004: Palace 1-2, 2007: QPR 0-1
1944: Charlie Revell scores five times against Luton in the war time league as Charlton win 9-4. After the war Revell played 117 games and scored 18 time for us.
1977: Alan Dugdale's debut away to Palace; a 1-1 draw with Steve Gritt getting our goal. Dugdale went on to make 38 first team appearances before breaking a leg in a reserve match. 2011: One of the best performances of last season as we beat Hartlepool 4-0 at Victoria Park (Wright-Phillips 2, Hollands, Wagstaff)
2010: Despite a fine show by Charlton's fattest former keeper, Nicky Weaver, Charlton were good enough to beat the Massives 1-0 thanks to a Scott Wagstaff goal.
1957: Steve Gritt born. 26 goals in 435 appearances in two spells between 1977 and 1993. Charlton's fifth highest appearances total. Joint manager with Curbs from 1991 to 1995. Several other coaching and scouting roles. Was until recently the chief scout at his hometown club, Bournemouth.
2002: Gary Rowett scored his only Addicks goal as Charlton drew 1-1 with Sunderland. He is now manager of Burton Albion. 2003: Matt Holland scored his first two goals for Charlton as Birmingham were beaten 2-1 at St Andrews. Birmingham had previously gone 8 matches without conceding. This was Charlton's 3rd concecutive away win.
1955: Buck Ryan scores four as Charlton beat Man City 5-2. Billy Kiernan got the other. 1976: Charlton 3 Plymouth 1. A Hales brace meant he had scored 16 times in 10 games. Flanagan got the other. 2011: Charlton 5 (Jackson 2, Morrison, Wright-Phillips, Hollands) Preston 2. For a long while it looked like it was going to be 5-0 or even better, but we conceded 2 in the last five minutes to help console Preston.
1915: Robert “Sailor” Brown born. 24 goals in 60 matches. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/mar/24/sailor-brown-obituary-charlton-athletic 1964: Clifford Durandt's last game; a defeat to Cardiff City. After that his mother bought his registration from Charlton for £4,000 enabling him to return to South Africa where he played for Germiston Calies.
1952: Mike Flanagan born. 120 goals in 396 appearances. In between his two stints at Charlton he was voted NASL's most valuable player and played in the '82 cup final for QPR.

Scotsman Tees is seen here in the colours of his third team Airdieonians, riding an imaginary space hopper.
