2007: Charlton 3 (Sodje, Iwelumo, Zheng) Cardiff 0. Dave Jones was widely tipped to be sacked from his post as Cardiff manager as a result, but held on to his job for a further 6 months.
Sam Sodje gets his first of his six Addicks goals.
1924: Bobby Turnbull signed from Arsenal for £350. He scored four goals in nine matches for us, before being sold on the Chelsea. The money from Chelsea was needed to pay Arsenal £300 that we still owed them for his purchase. This meant that he played for three different London clubs in three different divisions in one season.
Until today Charlton had only won twice on 11th November, both times against Newport County. 1933: Charlton 6 (six) Newport 1. Goals from Hobbis, Pearce 3 and Wilkinson 2. One of our goals was scored with only 9 men on the pitch and one with only ten. 1980: Charlton 3 Newport 0. Goals from Berry, Robinson and Hales.
1943: Charlton 8 (eight) Luton 2. Goals from Revell 3, Brown 2, Scott 2 and Moore. 1982: Alan Simonsen's league debut. He scored against Middlesbrough, as did Hales, but they still beat us. 2004: Charlton 4 (Johansson 2, Konchesky, Euell) Norwich 0. Two days later Konchesky would score again as the reserves beat Norwich 5-0. 2010: 5-1 away to Peterborough (Racon, Jackson 2, Martin 2)
Quick quiz: Without looking it up on the internet, which Charlton player is at the bottom of the bundle?
1965: Alex Dyer born. 1992: Last 'home' match at Upton Park. Garry Nelson scored but Newcastle still won. 2009: Charlton 5 MK Dons 1 (Mooney, Bailey, Sam, Sodje S, Burton)
1983: Charlton 1 Chelsea 1. Ken Bates agreed for this game to be brought forward from February to help with Charlton's cash flow. 1995: John Robinson's international debut for Wales v Albania in Tirana.
Yesterday was the first time Charlton won away on this date. Before that we had three wins on the 17th November all at home: 1984: Charlton 2 (Aizlewood, Lee) Birmingham 1 1973: Charlton 2 (Horsefield, Smart) Plymouth 0 1951: Charlton 2 (Lock, Hewie) Sunderland 1
1954: Charlton 5 (Hurst, Ayre, Keirnan, Firmani 2) Everton 0 1987: Ben Hamer born. 2010: Ten man Charlton beat Yeovil 3-2. Goals from Jackson (2) and Racon. Dailly sent off following an accidental clash of heads with Sam Williams. Yeovil were later reduced to 10 men too, though theirs was a correct sending off.
Just three wins on this date. Each saw us scoring two goals at The Valley against a team from out west. 1931: Charlton 2 (Watkins, Biswell) Plymouth 0 1970: Charlton 2 (Plumb, Bond) Cardiff 1 1995: Charlton 2 (Chapple, Robinson) Reading 1
1921: Edwin Herod signsfrom Ilford. “Baden” went on to play 236 matches before being sold to Brentford for £1,500 in 1928. 1941: Alan Mullery born. One season as Charlton manager before moving over to the dark side.
Charlton have won their last three matches on this date, all in the naughties. 2002: Charlton 3 (Konchesky, Rufus, Euell) Blackburn 1
2007: Preston 0 Charlton 2 (Zheng, Varney) 2009: Charlton 4 (Mooney, Burton, Bailey, Sodje A) Bristol Rovers 2. Kelly Youga's Charlton career effectively came to an end in the 22nd minute when he sustained a knee injury. This month Youga signed for Ipswich. Their manager, Mick McCarthy, described Youga as potentially the ‘signing of the century’ for Ipswich.
2011: The BBC report that Youga's replacement in the Bristol Rovers match, Elliot Omazuzi, was sentenced to 30 months in gaol for intimidating a witness. He was subsequently sacked by his then club Leyton Orient.
1975: Jeff Wood signs on a free. He had previously played just 10 matches in 5 years for Harlow town but also played in Sunday football for his employer STC. He made 166 appearances for Charlton. Later in his career he played for Happy Valley of Hong Kong.
1966: Phil Chapple born. 167 appearances over 5 years and 15 goals for the 6'2" defender. 1981: Stephan Anderson born. 18 appearances between the sticks before being replaced by Scott Carson. In 2008 he won the "Danish Goal Keeper" of the year award whilst playing from Brondby. Has been capped 18 times for his country. 1987: Kyel Reid born. 6 goals in 59 appearances. Was like a breath of fresh air when he came in on loan, but was very quickly Charltonised.
27th November 1976: England manager Don Revie visited Burnden Park to watch Derek Hales, but Hales didn't play. Sam Allardyce scored the winner for Bolton.
1925: Charlton 4 Windsor and Eton 2. Not a fixture that crops up all the time. 1945: Mike Walker born. One game on loan for the Addicks in 1973, but he went on to make 655 league appearances. He is perhaps more famous (at least amongst my generation) for his work as a manager. How many other goalkeepers have gone on to be successful managers. 1997: Charlton 3 Swindon 0 (Jones K, Mendonca 2 1p) 2011: Charlton 2 (Kermorgant, Ephraim) Huddersfield 0. Charlton dramatically end Huddersfield's 43 year unbeaten run. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llfoNMgXn4c
1973: Eamonn Dunphy signed from Millwall for £16,666. Three goals in 46 appearances from the diminutive midfielder who apparently didn't like it at Charlton very much. After a 415 match playing career, Dunphy moved into broadcasting/journalism, where he was frequently controversial.
1990: Alex Dyer signed for £100,000 from Palace following a two month loan spell. 15 goals in 86 appearances for the Addicks. The former schoolteacher became Chris Powell's right hand man in January 2011.
1934: Sam Bartram makes his debut for Charlton v Watford. Probably not the start he wanted conceding 2 goals, but he would go on to become the player with most Charlton appearances; 623 not including the war years. He's the only Charlton player with a statue at the ground and probably the only Charlton player to have a road named after him. 2002: After going 1-0 down at Elland Road, Charlton score two in the last 10 minutes to win the game. Lisbie and Parker got the goals.
1945: Dartford boy Malcolm Allison signs for Charlton Athletic from Charlton Rovers. Five years later he moved on to West Ham having played just two games for us. Is that really true what it says in The Valiant 500 that he was captain for us on his league debut?
What a great day for Charlton. So many positive things. Of course returning to The Valley was the best, but the others are pretty good too:
1914: Charlton's only ever victory in the FA Amateur Cup. 6-0 vs City of Westminster (Mills 3, Mitchell 2, Moore) 1992: Walsh 3.07PM 5/12/92 1995:Twice Kim Grant pots the orange ball. 2001: Chelsea 0 Charlton 1. Lisbie in the 89th. 2004: Palarse 0 – Rommedahl 1
