Yes, DP, KP's a rubbish player and should be dropped. Trott has a poor average and Cook doesnt score enough runs, oh, and by the way DRS is rubbish too !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I feel that there are a number of England batsmen who are under pressure.Strauss and Bell have not made enough runs recently, but they are still class players. The trouble is we do not have many young batsmen pushing for a place.I suppose Taylor is the only one. There is a lot of competition for bowling places:Broad,Anderson,Tremlett,Onions,Dernbach,Finn,Panesar,Swann,Meaker.
Disagree DP, England have a whole glut of young batsmen coming through - Vince,Hales,Buttler,Stokes,Taylor,Bairstow to name but a few who will start to break through over the next couple of years. Also, in the bowling dept you omit Danny Briggs who, in my opinion will become the best left arm spinner in the world in 5 years time - and you will find in 2 years time will be the England left-armer as 'one-ball' Monty is by-passed.
I'm not sure about Taylor. Great first class average, but he fluffed it for the lions. We do need to try a few more people out as I don't think Patel is the answer, and our middle order are stuttering of late
Re the hot spot issue...I believe that SriLanka aren't opposed to it but that it's very expensive for them to introduce....they tried to get Sky and the ICC to help with funding but were turned down by both parties.

You quote all these young batsmen, but will they be good enough to make the step up to international cricket.Hales,to me,is not good enough.Butler i rate but fluffed his lines in the one day series against Pakistan.Bairstow and Stokes are promising but need to kick on to get a place in the England line up.I have mentioned Taylor,Vince i have not seen enough of to make a judgement. The point i have made with the bowlers is that they have all made a contribution to England,in international cricket. The batsmen you mention, apart from a couple of knocks in one day cricket, have not contributed yet.Danny Briggs is,i agree,a very good prospect.
Agree with Chirpy. It's just a shame that Swann didn't break into the Test side till he was 28/29. Very respectable figures but perhaps more important is his ability to take wickets at vital times.
He did - he was taken on a tour of South Africa when he was around 20 and made himself very unpopular with the English establishment. One story is that he came down to breakfast one day with a black eye - an unmamed England player thumped him, although he claimed he walked into a door frame. He would have made the England team a year or two earlier but Monty Panesar came on the scene and had a great few seasons and as England have rarely played two specialist spinners in one team that was that.
Spin bowling is a bit of a craft, it takes a lot of time to learn to bowl that well and many spin bowlers tend to take a few years to master the art, the likes of Shane Warne are exceptions, but even his first few Tests were ordinary. Sadly in County cricket they are used negatively, bowling around the wicket, into the rough to tuck batsmen up and with a flat trajectory with fielders placed at mid-wicket and mid on and in the covers/mid off with a player back sweeping to cut down any scoring shots from loose deliveries. Swann to his credit worked hard and didn't go down that route and has become the best attacking English spin bowler that I can remember. He flights the ball well and gives it a big rip - the delivery that got Randiv late on the fourth evening was perfect - flight, late dip and then sharp turn all at a deceptively fast pace and although Randiv obliging left a gap between bat and pad I think it may well have gotten a much better batsman.

I agree DP. Just merely highlighting your quote about England not having any young batsmen coming through - these are young batsmen who MAY be ready to step up in 2/3 years time - they've all got the talent, its all now in the mind - thats why i think Vince and Stokes will be the ones to step on up.Stokes was out most of last season due to injury, but he was the one knocking on the door at the time. Also agree with the Swanny comment, he went to SA aged 20 but fell out with the management (Fletcher) at the time, and was discarded.
I like what England are doing with some of the younger players - identifying talent, nurturing it and seeing who has the temperament to succeed. It's not always who is the best batsman at County level - Michael Vaughan and Marcus Trescothick posted mediocre numbers before they were selected for England, while Mark Ramprakash and Graeme Hick according to their County averages and weight of runs should have been two of England's greatest Test batsmen ever.
Just wanted to say that i am fairly new to this forum (although an Addick of many, many years) , and i am hugely impressed with the cricket knowledge displayed herein.
