    Yup, superb entertainment
  • I fancy Britain to win at least 3/4 more medals out of the 6 events to come. Not sure why some of the events were taken out though, the time trials especially were very popular

One simple reason. The UCI (the cycling governing body) threw a mental when they saw Team GB dominate the last Olympics and changed the rules so it couldnt happen again.

    (Well...so they thought anyway ;-)

    John boy is that true

Never really watched the cycling before so are the events different this year

And what ones are missing and what were they replaced with

  • John boy is that true

Not strictly true - there were ten events at Beijing and ten this year, what the IOC/UCI did insist on though is that there should only be one competitor from each nation in the individual events which stopped Jason Kenny and Chris Hoy from competing in the Men's sprint - Kenny was chosen meaning Hoy can't defend one of his Beijing golds.

And what ones are missing and what were they replaced with

The Madison has gone and the Men's and Women's Individual Pursuit (the race where two riders start on opposite sides of the track) and the Men's and Women's points races. The replacements are the women's team sprint, the women's team pursuit, the women's keirin and the men's and women's omnium races.
  • And were those changes really made to stifle us ?
  • getting rid of the individual pursuits pissed me off no end, it's the race which got me interested in track cycling when Boardman won it in Barcelona.

    No...

But everyone loves a conspiracy theory.
  • What's the Maddison

I think I watched the individual pursuits in bejing and thought it was great entertainment

whats the deal with the old man riding round for 4 laps on his peddle n pop ?

It's the Keirin - Japan's contribution to cycling (alongside Shimano) originally it was developed as a gambling race and became a mainstream race internationally. Strangely considering its Japanese origins there are no Keirin riders of international note although it's still a big sport in Japan.

The bike is called a "derny" and is a motorised bicycle rather than a motorbike. Anyway as you can see they do several laps of the velodrome, the bike drops away and they have a mad sprint for the line. A great finish by VP - who was so confident/determined that she went really early and took the long way around and still won comfortably.

The men's Keirin is on Tuesday.

strange, why dont they just make the race shorter ?
  • Why do they need the motor bike just race without it

That was what Chris Boardman said in commentary on Thursday!
  • Ed Clancy lying 2nd after 4th discipline in Omnium and is strong in last 2 disciplines.
  • Pendleton set new WR in heats
  • World Record'inell! Must be some sort of World Record the amount of World Records we're setting in Track Cycling
  • not a WR, just OR
  • I know there was 10 events before and still 10 now. There are less for men and more for women this time around. Which is why I think they should have increased it to maybe 12 events this year, especially when it would increase our tally ;)
Although the omnium includes a pursuit, I think the individual pursuit should still be a event. people like Thomas and Burke only have 1 event now.
  • Boardman won the individual pursuit at Barcelona and Wiggins at Beijing, the Olympics without it is a bit curious, like dropping the 100m sprint, it's the race to win.
  • I can't believe the pursuit is not in there, nor the time trial (1km for men and 500m for women), it wouldn't hurt to chuck in a couple of extra events
  • This makes no sense, why didn't Clancy just sit in the wheel of the pack and go with any breakaway?

I would imagine he didn't have the legs, and wanted to save himself for the time trial which starts in about half hour.

  • got an outside chance of medal, wont be anything above bronze now though
  • Oh, only bronze, booo, hiss :-)
  • done very well to get a bronze, was only an outside bet at the start, but after the first few days, anything is possible for Team GB in the velodrome
  • The individual pursuit is a classic race, can't believe they got rid of it, it's almost iconic, seeing one cyclist chasing another one down.

Oh, and on an unrelated topic, that Laura Trott is a bit of a cutie isn't she...
  • French are now suspicious as to why we are winning everything. Probably because we are BETTER !!!!!!
  • here they go!
  • That French rider is gorgeous, as are most of the indoor cyclists.
Still hope he loses in the final.
  • great ride from Kenny.
  • what is going on in this race? it looks like a free for all and then every 10 laps they all go fast. but people have been lapped!
  • she won the last bit but is actually 10th...hmmm..

anyway, sprint final up now - could be gold for GB! (i think)?!
