As a cycling thickie, please can someone explain why they go slow at the start?
Cos if you try and give it the billy big bollocks beans for 3 whole laps, you'll lose everytime as you will tire whilst the other guy sits in your slipstream

Occasionally you see them go for it from the start - but it's cat and mouse for two laps. The one on the inside is at a disadvantage as the outside rider has the advantage of sitting on his wheel, slipstreaming him and then overtaking in the straight. So the idea is to push your opponent up the track and then see if you can get the jump on him which is difficult to do from the front but not impossible. It's a good race as it mixes tactics and sheer flatout sprinting speed. Bauge, the French cyclist who was beaten 2-0 is the world champ at this discipline.
brilliant stuff, outside the athletics stadium, that veladrome is the place to be
I've not actually been to either so my opinion is based purely on what I've seen on he telly, but I'd far rather be in the velodrome than at the stadium.
In a funny way, we've won so many gold medals in the velodrome, that they've become routine and commonplace, whereas in the athletics stadium, gold medals are far harder for our competitors to obtain, so seem more special!
If Kenny had only come second today, that would have been considered by many a major failure, especially as competition for GB places is so tight, which is an extraordinary state of affairs.
The velodrome is a magnificent building beautiful to look at but it should've held 20k not 6 and that will be the sad thing about it we had a chance to build something that not only looks beautiful bit could hold so much more
Don't know anything about the technicalities of track cycling but i am mightily impressed with this group of athletes who all seem to pull for one another and must be amongst the tightest knit goup of athletes anywhere. All I can say is that they constantly amaze me and always make me proud to be British
Agree dave, and I would add the administrators of the sport are awesome too.
Brilliant interview with Head of GB Cycling - I think they said it was Dave Brailsford. French are very suspicious of our success and he is endlessly grilled by the French media. Having had enough of this he told L'Equipe that the secret was getting ''perfectly round wheels''. They bought it and printed the secret this week, he said with a grin.
The whole set up is unbelievably professional, technical analysis, research of military and other industries to see what could be applied to GB cycling, minutely detailed performance analysis etc. Huge respect to the team and I couldn't imagine a more superb, perfect director - what a guy!
London is bidding for the 2016 world track championships, hopefully they'll get it, would love to go to the veledrome and by 2016 my little boy should be big enough to appreciate it more.
