  • 1971, the year we got hitched, £4,995 for a new 1-bed flat in Sutton, Surrey. Happy, carefree days, then kids arrived and we moved to a cardboard box in middle of t'road.

  • 2 bed terrace in Frindsbury for 73,500 in 2001 aged 24

  • 1979, aged 25, tiny 3 bed terrace in Dartford, £11,750.
  • The reverse side of the coin is that I went after a house in eliot vale in Blackheath in 1973, my wife could get a mortgage on a really great little house facing the heath. Because I was a final year student I could not get a mortgage, even though I had received an inheritance that year....... anyway this small, but great house was regarded as 'old'. Noticed in 2005 the house sold for £600,000, so probably worth £850,000 plus. Bloody Woolwich building society, the house will be there in 100 years time still looking like an advert out of dream homes. The actress Jill Casgoigne lived on the corner as well. So nearly 40 years of house decorating and my present house is not even worth half that. Still could have been worse could have not bought the house next door worth £1.5 millionish......
How to earn a million quid for doing very little

1992. Aged 25. Little ground floor flat in quiet Catford cul-de-sac. Bought for 50k. 15% interest rate and just before the market crashed.

Remember next door sold for 20k around 94-95 but held onto mine and sold it in 1998 for.... 50k.

Loved that place and it could tell some stories. Always wished I had kept it, would have been the perfect rental.

Just Googled the address and next door (same one that went for 20k) sold last September for 151k.... Bugger!!
