Whether it’s Kendrick or Jay-Z or Kanye West or any other big hip-hop name, if someone doesn’t like it there always seems to be that snooty reaction of “well, you’re just not intelligent enough to get it” all over social media.
I’ve tried listening to Kendrick and I think it’s shite. Just my opinion, and it isn’t a right or wrong one. One’s music tastes doesn’t make anyone less or more intelligent.
There’s also the predictable, lazy reactions every time there’s a rapper at Glasto.
I’m a big Kendrick fan, up there with the greats for me. Probably most similar to Nas of them all. Thought he started slow but once the DAMN tunes came out it predictably picked up

But I do find it hard to listen to opinions if someone dismisses a whole genre of music. Sure there's definite genres I like more than others and certain artists within the genres I like that I don't like.
But anyone flat out saying they don't like hip hop or rock or jazz or classical etc. I have a hard time dealing with them. They either haven't really listened to them or they don't really like music which if either are the case it's fine just don't express opinions about them.
Yeah the issue isn't not really liking a particular rap artist.
The issue is that it seems only hip hop/rap gets tarred with the same brush as 'not real music' when it's as varied and complex as any other genre.
Kendrick Lamar is very different to Stormzy, who is very different to Kanye West, who is very different to Drake, who is very different to Post Malone, Eminem, Dave, the Streets it goes on and on.
Rappers and the like go so fast, and often have poor diction. I wouldn’t know if they were good wordsmiths or not, or the range and timbre of their singing voices. There is an attraction in the relentless unvaried beat, you can even join in by hitting yourself over the head repeatedly with a tin tray. The addition of somebody who can play a musical instrument would be something to get into.
Here is my lyric for rap training.
I got an Irish wristwatch, Irish wristwatch, Irish wristwatch Don't want a timex, don’t want a Rolex, want a Junghaus in the house give me a Junghaus in the house, or watch a Swatch, watch a Swatch, watch a Swatch. Choose stew Tuesday, Tuesday is stew day, the test is over and the wicked cricket critic’s whip snapped, because the sixth sick sheep, the sixth sick sheep, the sixth sick sheep was too tired to trot.
It's funny, Macca I'd have been all over as I love the Beatles.... but would have walked away bored after half hour and actually turned the TV off not long after that. KL I don't know anything about, but from watching on TV it looked like it was lots of fun and would have been great on the Friday/Saturday night.

With the one thing in common that they are all sh*t
I like rap and hip-hop as a whole but I don't much like Lemar to be honest.
On another note, watched an act last night whose music I quite liked but didn't get their name, or maybe it was just the front man who had the name, the guy crowd surfed so if that helps I'd be grateful of a name. Not much to go on I know but I only caught a minute or so of it as I turned over.

Ah yes. The "if you don't like rap you're being "lazy"" argument. As you say, all very predictable.
I think it might be absolute radio, who have a slogan of ( or used to) "where real music lives" , cringey. I'm mainly into rock/indie/metal but i certainly wouldn't describe another genre as "not real music". Watched a bit of Kendrick and whilst not my cup of tea it was enjoyable.

I mean he's alright but he's no Treach, Ice cube or ol dirty bstard
Set of the weekend for me was Self Esteem....started off maybe a little 'slow' but bloody hell it was awesome...as for her costume...that must have chaffed...
For some reason iPlayer still not showing the McCartney set?? Well I can't find it.
It's on catch up if you're still with Virgin.
Cheers. Got round to it last night. Unbelievable performance from 80year old.
That's the thing with Glastonbury. You watch a set like McCartney and it makes you feel relativity young. Then you watch a set by Bicep and feel bloody ancient.

It’s ‘where real music matters’. I think it’s just a slogan rather than a nod to a genre. I heard De La Soul played on Absolute 90s last week

I gave Kendrick a few minutes, like all rappers, confirm its not my cup. Its not an age thing, rap, hip hop, etc have been around for many years. I just dont get it and never have. A bit like a Tracy Emin bit of art, it doesn't appeal to my to senses.

Unexpected surprise of the weekend for me was Haim,
KL isnt my cup of tea at all but i could listen to Biggy all day. You cant just say 'I dont like rap/hip hop' cos there are so many different styles within it.
Expect some negative comments later from everyone else that doesn't get hip hop.
I get hip hop. I love PE, Beasties, Pharcyde, J5,RTJ, Eruc B etc etc. and newer stuff like Denzel Curry or most grime ( I like Skepta and Dave)
but just don’t get the hysteria about Kendrick or for that matter J fucking Zed or Kanye.
And one other thing in my opinion. Hip hop doesn’t work live and definitely doesn’t work for a festival. There’s only so many times I can hear make some noise, or hand in the air Or the extra mates they bring along to finish their sentences
my Glastonbury highlights were:
Wet Leg (giggling like competition winners) Sleaford Mods (hilarious) Roisin Murphy ( weirdo, beautiful and what a voice) Girl in Red (great energy and refreshingly honest and unpolished)
Self Esteem ( probably one the best of the weekend) Fontaines DC (although not sure how well they translate to a sunny stage as opposed to the gig venue or tent) Bruce coming on and Macca doing Glory Days (I was emotional) Little Simz (that’s how you do hip hop live) IDLES ( the best)
Dogshit: Diana Ross TLC Sampa the great
I went to Glastonbury every year it was on from 1987 to 1999 and stopped as it was just getting too commercial. It now looks so different from my day but that being said you don’t go for the music so we’re signing up for next year and going posh. I love it and miss it
I'm guessing Elton will be next year. Tbh there's so much more than what you see in the BBC coverage, from my 6 visits I've literally only seen Foo fighters, Katie Perry, Jay Z and The stones on the main stage... most of the time I'm in the SE corner or Arcadia.
