If you grew up in the 50's , 60's and 70's eve the 80's you probably won't like rap.
It sounds awful, has no artistic merit ant is as close to music as a cow's back side is. To me it is an unintelligible row of shouting by inadequate poets who are tuneless.
I thought McCartney was past it to be honestas he definitely sings badly now but when you see the alternative I can see why he bothers to carry on.

I grew in the 60's and 70's and like rap/hip hop, but I also like lots of other genres.
If rap genuinely “has no artistic merit and is as close to music as a cow's back side is”, and “is an unintelligible row of shouting by inadequate poets who are tuneless” then it would be unlikely to become the world’s biggest selling genre. And btw McCartney is a big fan of reggae, soul, r&b and rap.
I though AJ Tracey was brilliant also backed by a full on punk/metal band giving it some, much more raw a nod to the audience he was playing too, sounds like the old Ice T cross over bodycount sound at times. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p0c7j9kj/glastonbury-aj-tracey
Also Wolf Alice, Wet Leg, Jamie T, Little Simz, Billie Ellish, Bicep, Foals
Expect some negative comments later from everyone else that doesn't get hip hop.
I get hip hop. I love PE, Beasties, Pharcyde, J5,RTJ, Eruc B etc etc. and newer stuff like Denzel Curry or most grime ( I like Skepta and Dave)
but just don’t get the hysteria about Kendrick or for that matter J fucking Zed or Kanye.
And one other thing in my opinion. Hip hop doesn’t work live and definitely doesn’t work for a festival. There’s only so many times I can hear make some noise, or hand in the air Or the extra mates they bring along to finish their sentences
my Glastonbury highlights were:
Wet Leg (giggling like competition winners) Sleaford Mods (hilarious) Roisin Murphy ( weirdo, beautiful and what a voice) Girl in Red (great energy and refreshingly honest and unpolished)
Self Esteem ( probably one the best of the weekend) Fontaines DC (although not sure how well they translate to a sunny stage as opposed to the gig venue or tent) Bruce coming on and Macca doing Glory Days (I was emotional) Little Simz (that’s how you do hip hop live) IDLES ( the best)
Dogshit: Diana Ross TLC Sampa the great
I went to Glastonbury every year it was on from 1987 to 1999 and stopped as it was just getting too commercial. It now looks so different from my day but that being said you don’t go for the music so we’re signing up for next year and going posh. I love it and miss it
So you didn't watch Kendrick basically then? He did none of that. But you're a rock head so that's fine and I wouldn't expect you to. Don't generalise.
Also 'hip hop doesn't work live' - then later says 'that's how you do hip hop live', sounds like you're a bit confused.

It just reinforces my opinion that most people in the world either follow what that are told is good music or are totally tone deaf. And just because Macca was in the biggest group of all time, one of the best selling solo artists, extremely talented songwriter, fine musician, great performer and been around for more years than most, doesn't make his opinion trump mine.

no I didn’t watch it and probably won’t. I like aalright and swimming pools and most of the rest is not for me.
And hip hop doesn’t work live in general in my opinion. And I’ve seen some woeful examples in my many years of gigging. De La Soul being the worst of all.

Not angry at all.
Your example of hip hop not working live included 3 examples in which Kendrick Lamar did none of them. Was just a bad generalisation of hip hop showing no awareness of the performers.
You later said Little Simz was one of your favourites and she is a hip hop artist. So how does that square with hip hop not working?

I must've missed those guys. Were they any good?
Interesting, but don't know what they are like live

Inadequate poets who win the Pulitzer Prize. But ignore that, they’re shit because ‘addick1956’ said so.
I've had the usual father/son arguments with both of mine.
Over a decade ago my eldest tried to tell me that Pete Doherty and the Libertines were going to end up bigger influencers than Paul McCartney and the Beatles. The irony that they both performed this year at Glasto but he will never win that argument and is starting to accept that now.
The youngest used to try and trash my liking of rock but recently I have caught him trying to play many such solos on his guitar. The other day it was Free Bird. I wished him good luck with that but it is gratifying that he's come round at last!
I played drums, as a teenager, in rock, progressive rock and punk bands, I enjoy soul music and reggae but my taste just doesn't extend to rap or hip hop. But I wouldn't knock either of my sons for enjoying any music. It really is what floats your boat as long as they don't tell me that their music is so much better than mine!
When it comes to live performances we are entering a zone. I think rap is any spoken vocalisation along with some kind of backing sound. I don’t think rap is singing as such. I don’t think rap is spoken word because of the accompaniment of sounds, but I see plain unaccompanied spoken word as poetry.
Now if you take a section like
The man don’t care I said the man don’t care I don’t get satisfaction reaction because The man don’t care.
Yes it is social, political and personal expression and commentary, but to be singing it needs more in it, like a tune. I would be surprised if there was genuine rap harmony (see Everly Brothers) but unsurprised if there was rap in unison. I don’t mind if it has a message or is political, music has ever been thus and artists have the right to express themselves. That doesn’t necessarily make it valid. Smack my bitch up is expression, but unless I miss the obvious irony I find that kind of sentiment distasteful, but then again I find the questionable edge of nonce lyric ‘Well she was just seventeen’ questionable too.
I still stand by my opinion that hip hop/rap-doesn’t work live. It’s my opinion and I’ve give it a go I assure you.
music is probably the only thing I’m properly passionate about and I’ve been gigging since 1979 when I was 12. So I feel qualified to at least have a view.
load of people will disagree and that’s fine. But give me Floyd doing the Wall at Earls Court, Radiohead at Glastonbury in 97, or Orbital in 94 anyway over any American rap any day.
but in my car 3 feet high and rising, it takes a nation of millions or DJ Shadow any time. Great stuff
I love hip hop, I'm passionate abut it ever it gave me an escape from getting punched in the face other other day, used to get the rap is crap jibes as well, it's weird to think a whole genre, is crap, there's good and bad in every genre. I'm not into Drake or Kanye, but I like Kendrick, Nas, The roots, Common, Little Brother, A tribe called Quest, Rapsody
