New Zealand cricketer Jesse Ryder is reported to be in critical condition in a Christchurch hospital after being attacked in the city on Wednesday.

The reports suggest the hard-hitting batsman is being treated for a fractured skull, a punctured lung and internal bleeding after being set upon by multiple people.

Detective senior sergeant Brian Archer explained Ryder was involved in a brief altercation "two or three" people when he left the bar but was then attacked by one of the individuals after he crossed the road to a nearby fast-food outlet.

"The hospital advise he is in a critical condition. He is in an induced coma as a result of suffering multiple injuries," Archer added.

Compton managed to find a way to give his wicket away, mis-hitting the slow left armer and managed to scoop the ball to point.

after 4 maidens in a row, Compton had a schwing at it trying to go over the top. failed. couldn't handle the pressure! tbf the ball did move a little bit upon watching the replay but it was a stupid shot to play anyway

There's more to life than T20, and there's nothing better (cricket wise) than a full blooded Test match battle, but this has been pretty soporific.

England seem to be batting in the negative style sometimes seen recently when they are playing on the subcontinent, when they are so afraid of making mistakes, that they get bogged down. To allow an average spinner like Martin to bowl 21 overs for 29 runs is poor.

I wonder if it might have been better to send Bairstow in ahead of Root, as he's a more attacking player.

I think this is to do with our consistently poor starts to test series over the last year or two. They seem to be playing with a "don't give anything away" or "do anything except lose" mentality.

I love test cricket, but that was a borefest. I'm glad I didn't buy a ticket, as I didn't think it would be a good series and assumed the weather would be poor. Got something right !

I went to Lords last year in May & nearly got frost bite in the black cloudy dark day. Although my mate did manage to burn his head :-)

Correct. The forecasts have changed since lunch time, when I agreed to go to the mother in laws, ( as the forecasts said loads of rain :-(

Don't mind the odd shower or break in play, just so long as it isn't hour/s of it

just about warmed up after a chilly day in the Compton. Even on a hot sunny day the wind swells around there so we were well prepared.

warmed up at lunch having a cider in the nursery but had to get a coffee at tea to warm me up!

thank gawd we're not sitting there for the Ashes.

Havnt seen the highlights but maybe they are concerned about the first test syndrome - as they have a habit recently of not doing well in the first test of series - as Cook has mentioned.
160-4 might not be a bad score once we see NZ batting, Average 1st innings score at Lords is apparently 315 - so, we're not that far off. Glad i'm not going though, amazing that Lords is sold out for 1st 4 days - thats about 110,000 paying customers - if its an average of 50 squid then thats 5 and a half million quid on gate receipts alone -and i know when i go to Lords that i always end up spending a hefty whack on drinky-poos.No wonder they spent so much money on drainage so that they could ensure 15 overs is played and therefore no refunds.

I'm there later today. To have our two brightest and exciting batsmen at the crease from the start of play is something to take the mind off how cold it will be. Thank goodness that they have got the beer situation finally sorted at Lords. The Marstons is excellent.
