  • The organisations that still perpetuate the 'man made climate change' theory have a vested interest in keeping it going, so that they continue to receive the vast sums of money given to them at the ordinary consumer's expense.

Meanwhile the organisations that fund the denialists curiously have no interest whatsoever in perpetuating denialism...

The wattsupwiththat site for example takes funding from the Heartland Institute - major funders of which include organisations like Exxon-Mobil.

  • We don't need anyone to tell us that it isn't happening - we can see it. We've had a succession of freezing cold winters and wet summers which are the exact opposite of what the global warming protagonists told us would happen. A little bit of global warming right now would be rather nice!
  • Never confuse global warming with climate change.

This issue is about more than just one nation's weather - in Australia for example they have experienced record temperatures with droughts etc. Similarly in the US, particularly in central landlocked USA they have had similar weather patterns with droughts etc. Russia had record rainfall - causing havoc with the wheat harvests in the Ukraine. In the UK predictions were for unsettled weather that was not seasonally typical, and that's what we appear to be getting. The wet summer last year for example was caused by the Gulf Stream running a lot lower than normal - why - because of the freshwater flooding into the north Atlantic from melting arctic polar caps. What caused the polar ice caps to melt...global warming.

The accumulation of CO2 in the atmosphere has reached levels not witnessed in 650,000 years and the heat-trapping nature of CO2 is one of the principle causes of global warming and it's us humans that have been pumping ever greater quantities of it into the atmosphere. The increase in CO2 has been evident since the start of the industrial revolution.

There's plenty of evidence for AGW, if you do not believe it then it's because you choose not to believe it and not because there is evidence that supports your stance. Looking at the evidence and then concluding the exact opposite is not scientifically literate.

  • Why would record rainfall in Russia affect wheat harvests in the Ukraine?
  • Why would record rainfall in Russia affect wheat harvests in the Ukraine?

Because they are neighbours and subject to the same weather patterns?

The Russian wheat harvest fell by an estimated 15% last year, the Ukraine's by about 25-30%. Russia promptly embargoed exports of grain.

Even the Guardian has had to report a change of thinking by the Met Office.
  • The Earth heats up, the Earth cools down.

We're still coming out of the ice age for God's sake, of course the temperature is going to rise.

Oi! Let's have less of the common sense posts thank you very much :-)

  • Even if you think it's a load of rubbish anyways, we will still run out of oil in the near future.

    No, we won't.

    Cheap oil maybe.

This. Over a thousand years worth worldwide, but a lot of that is too expensive to get out.

  • Probably cheaper than the vast subsidies on useless wind turbines!
  • 34 degrees in Riviera Maya at the moment. Enjoying the British weather, suckers?
  • Yet again our weather forecasters have got it wrong. Yesterday on tv and even on the BBC and Met Office weather forecast websites for Kent right now, they are saying that we will have sunshine this afternoon. Instead it is very cloudy and just now on the BBC weather forecast on tv, they were forecasting showers for the rest of the afternoon. With all the technology they have these days they should be better than they are.

What has happened to the hot dry summers and mild wet winters the global warming theorists told us 20 years ago, would become the norm for Britain? We could do with a bit of sun warmth right now.

ME 14 - So much misunderstanding it is hard to know where to start. I think you have confused two separate issues (you are not alone!)

Global warming - Average temperatures (of the planet) have climbed 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit (0.8 degree Celsius) FACT
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports that 11 of the past 12 years are among the dozen warmest since 1855

Climate change - the UK's climate is changing, obviously.

Forecasting - obviously it's not ever going to be a precise art - look at these images and you will see why such a dynamic system is by nature unpredictable.

  • I'm sorry but I do not believe all the so called evidence. So much of it is used to 'fit' what the climate change theorists want. I don't dispute that climate changes - it has done since the planet was formed. We've had much warmer and much colder periods than we have now,

I've read other reports that say that the planet hasn't warmed at all in the last 20 years. You pay your money and take your choice as the saying goes.

Weather is unpredictable, I agree, but when the BBC and Met office produce forecasts showing what the weather will be like in hourly or three hourly slots I would expect it to be more accurate than it is.
  • Britain's climate does seem to be changing - it's a lot colder than it was. We've had a succession of cold winters and cool summers. This doesn't fit the original theory that we are supposed to have hot summers and mild winters.

  • I view this in a very simplistic way. The climate is changing. I do not know and nor does anybody else know exactly why it is changing. What we do know is that the worlds climate has always changed. We know man has created greenhouse gasses. To what extent if any man is influencing the climate change is unknown. Both sides of the argument have an agenda. Whichever side prevails it will be you and I that pay for it.

  • There has been reports (very early stages and I will be dead and buried before anybody can confirm or otherwise this) that the Gulf Stream is slowing, if this is the case then don't forget we are on the same latitude as Moscow, therefore expect much colder winter and any type of summer you can call. Why the Gulf Stream is slowing (if it is) is again open to many theories, it might be that the ice caps are melting and the cold water is forcing it lower or there are 100's off other reasons all making perfect sense. Until we understand these sort of interactions then nobody can come up with deffinate answers, dont forget a very important fact everybody is guessing both the pro and anti climate change, as climate change take a very long time to prove or disprove, throughout the history of this planet warming and cooling has constantly been occurring throughout Britain, Britain has been covered by ice and grape vines and funny enough nobody blamed climate warming or cooling then.

Many years ago when the first technical papers started dribbling out some extremely clever sod predicted that for Britain the winters would get colder around the turn of the millennium and the summers would cool off after a few hot summers, this would continue. Unfortunately this was the age before the Internet and finding it again has proven to be impossible.
  • Bloody windy in Footscray Meadows earlier. Just got home and had torrential rain. Now the sun is out, not a cloud in the sky and the wind has dropped completely - all within an hour or so.

    All very odd.
  • Hope its nice for my daughters communion next sat, looks like it will be
  • Jousting at Eltham Palace was a tad er damp.

Quite agree. I think that's a fair expectation.

  • Why would record rainfall in Russia affect wheat harvests in the Ukraine?

Because water doesn't care much about national boundaries. There are at least seven Ukrainian Rivers that start out in Russia: Dnipro; Seversky Donets; Vorskla; Psel; Udy; Lopan and Kharkiv. There's bound to be loads more when you start looking at the small ones. Still, the Mius somehow manages to start in Ukraine and end in Russia.
