The people of Woolwich

How proud should we all be of the people of Woolwich, Charlton and the surrounding areas. The flower tributes around the barracks speak volumes for those people from a deprived part of South East London.
Charlton supporters who have posted their support on here for a charity match in honour of Lee Rigby and their desire to help make this happen makes me proud to be a Charlton fan and a South EAST Londoner.
I am not sure if it has already been mentioned but I would like to see the 3 unbelievably brave women who stood up to these (unable to use a word strong enough) and their families to be guests of honour if they can be traced if the match gets the go ahead.
Let us have the march from the barracks and send out the message to all that we are Charlton they are the British Army and we go where we like

    Very well said.
I've always been incredibly proud of the fact I grew up In Woolwich.
Say what you will about the place, there is a proud history that is undeniable.

Recent events have really given me a real boost of pride about the place, the community, the genuine care shown towards the family of our fallen soldier, and the tributes laid too!... it's all very touching and I hope the world can see this place looking out for one-another too.

I drove down The road today, and was amazed by the amount of flowers at both the entrance to the barracks and opposite the spot where Drummer Rigby was killed. Also, they seemed no end of people walking towards the spot with flowers in their hands.
Its a shame that something like this brings the best out of people and makes a community stronger yet community groups spend years doing good work and get no response. What a strange and messed up world we live in.

I was born in Woolwich and agree with your sentiments.

I live in Woolwich and its been a very strange atmosphere in the town since it happened. I drove up John Wilson Street yesterday and there's endless flowers and people getting out of their cars and walking to the spot where John Rigby was killed to pay their respects. Very sad but good to see a town united like that.

cafc I agree with you but at least Drummer Rigbys death will not be in vain if it brings the community together and I hope that his family will see the news coverage from Woolwich and get some comfort from this.

Sorry guys, i was born and brought up in Woolwich, and proud of my heritage - but, the place now is a total tip, full of total reprobates, and SE18 is the postcode fraud capital of Europe. Its a place i didnt want my kids growing up in, and feel sorry for people who are 'stuck' there - because you certainly wouldnt live there out of choice.

President of course you are entitled to your opinion however, Woolwich has over the past couple of years had huge investment into the town centre, the Arsenal, DLR and crossrail. It is improving and with 2 bed flats going for over 300K I could not afford to live in parts of Woolwich if I wanted to. Woolwich and Thamesmead are getting better and with will benefit the surrounding areas

Wife drove past on the way to work, was overwhelmed with the flowers had to pull to wipe her tears, tears of sadness and tears of pride for the amount of support.

Standard tonight saying Lee had split from his wife a while ago and that his serving girlfriend was being flown back from Afghanistan. Not seen that reported anywhere else.

I was born in Woolwich, spent much of my childhood in the area, studied, lived and worked there for many years, met my wife in the Earl of Chatham. Even though I no longer live in the area (moved away so I could buy a property) it will always be my home town. Apart from natural progress it is no different now than from what I experienced.
The majority of people are good, honest and hardworking. I can actually only see two visual differences in the area. 1, The buildings: Major investment in transport infrastructure, superstores and accommodation. 2, The people: When I first grew up in the area the people were predominately Caucasian and now it is a diverse ethnic mix. In my opinion these changes are positive and should be embraced. I also agree and support the original post by Vincent.

So how comes we have the new builds in the old Arsenal site? How about the acadamy site? People obviously want to live there! They are slowly rebuilding the town centre and local area around it.

I think discussions about the Woolwich area as a whole should move to another thread, as this one is about the heroics of the people in the area.

I'll be honest with you B , as someone who was brought round where you are that's really only SE18 in postcode . The actual area I lived in was quite different to the rest of Woolwich where I went to school.

Someone mentioned about the Arsenal development , do you think those people socialise in Woolwich itself? (and I don't include the dial arch pub in this)

I was born in woolwich and went to the Mulgrave primary school next to where the murder took place. Good to see the people laying flowers. I will lay flowers along with many others on Sunday to pay my respects. RIP

I know but i do walk to Woolwich Arsenal station everyday. There is a smart new Coffee Lounge in the Square, new pub coming. New Tescos... they are doing a good job in tarting it up, it looks better. But obviously the people do let it down...

You will cause offence to all the decent people living in Woolwich, some of which have been posting on here. I do not wish to cause offence to the middle and upper classes but since time began when there is a crises the working classes show their metal and as is so true really are the salt of the earth only a real snob would disagree and this is not just about the people of Woolwich but the working class areas of SE7, SE9, SE28, SE10 part of SE3, Erith and Belverdere, Welling, Bexleyheath, Dartford, Crayford and beyond

Pains me to say it but I'm with The_President here. I was born in Woolwich, used to drink there regularly, and whilst in the 70s it was still a vibrant working class area it was already in decline. When the Arsenal finally closed, and the big retailers disappeared the Council became the only employer of any substance in the area. The economy's bust now, and the place is full of pound shops, discount stores and charity shops, and people living on very small budgets. At one stage not so many years ago SE18 was the poorest postcode in the UK.

Sadly the ethnic mix in Woolwich isn't all a healthy melting pot. There are communities of refugees from war torn areas, various groups of questionable ethics, gangs, violence and a myriad of tensions. A copper mate of mine tells me that they will always think twice before attempting to stop Somalians as so many of them were taught to survive in a war from a very early age and are considered extremely dangerous.

Yes I know there are plenty of good law abiding folk living in Woolwich, but I wonder how many actually chose to live there ahead of other areas in the borough. SE18 as a postcode also includes Shooters Hill, Plumstead, Welling borders, and having lived in Plumstead for 15 years before I left last year I can say the mix of cultures there is generally a healthy one. But I can't agree it's quite the same in Woolwich.

The regeneration project has benefited the Council above all, a neat £3m pa saving on the building rationalisation, but there's doubts as to whether there will be any money in the next budget to continue the work and much has been criticised by local residents. In fact there were even interviews in the last few days on TV of people observing the money wasn't going on things that would change the local economy and/or make a real difference rather than a cosmetic one - and until they do Woolwich will be stuck. Great there's a mega Tesco's - will it help attract the big retailers back, regenerate the market, bring other businesses into town? I'm doubtful - in the meantime the Council are telling everyone how wonderful they have a library 4 times the size of its predecessor. Very worthy, but it won't transform the place.

I fear its last chance will be Crossrail. If the Council can't take advantage of the opportunities that offers then I just don't know where Woolwich can go.

While I see the point about Woolwich not being the best melting pot, I know quite a few people from there, and while it has its problems, I think Woolwich still has a bit of fight in her. The problem is that the council isn't really helping out. Woolwich could be a great spot for young people and people from diversified backgrounds to set up businesses while living affordably. And there is nothing wrong with the opportunities that Woolwich represents -- lots of people in the area, and a good spot I would think to establish a business.

As it stands currently, I live in Greenwich, I do well here, but I don't know if I could get clients to go to Woolwich. That's a bit of the problem. Also, Woolwich has a rubbish football team (Arsenal).

I've had a few but gonna say it so mods delete if nessescry but , Woolwich is an absolute craphole. Sometimes I wish I was born a few decades earlier so that I could experience London with true Londoners and not the community we have now. Completely with The Pres here and screw the PC brigade,we used to liv in a great country. Absolutely disgusting what this city has become,l i can hardly recognise the city from one in the middle east nowadays.

I was born in British Hospital For Mothers and Babies (Wood hill/Dockyard) and grew up in Charlton through the 80s. Woolwich was never a posh place, but it had good people White/Black/Brown. Remember being dragged round the market by me Nan, I remember being allowed to run into the Aquitable to look at the tropical fish in the fish tank they in there. However, now when I return it isn't the same place, as Curb It says there are some nice bits but the main square for me will never be the same. They can build boozers and coffee shops etc, but it won't change the people....

I tend to agree. Woolwich has had it's fair share of challenges over the years, but I've never seen it in the mess it seems to be in now. Fantastc memories of going shopping there with Mum back in the 60s, but now gind it a place to avoid.

Agree with you as well. Wouldn't feel safe walking through Woolwich on my own of a night time. Place is, in the main, a dodgy dump. Bexleyheath is slowly becoming like it...the pound shops are a massive giveaway.
