Craig Bellamy on row with Dean Keily

  • Most likely a bit of 'banter' going back and forth throughout the game. Keily goes one step to far (most likely unaware that Bellamy has also lost his nan). Bellamy asks for an apology and Keily gives it genuinely. Should be the end of the matter and yet Bellamy does two things he turns the 'apology' into entertainment for his mates and brings it all up again years later in his book.

Not quite Bellamy called Kiely who THEN apologised, if Kiely was so mortified why didn't he make contact with Bellamy himself and apologise rather than wait to be prompted?

Very poor form from Kiely and had it been the other way round people would be giving Bellamy pelters.

In the heat of a battle when you are fired up, you can say somethings that are our of character. I think it says a lot about the man that he openly admitted he was up all night thinking about it afterwards.

Come on, if he wasn't a Charlton hero would you be excusing him ?
If it was John Terry or Joey Barton.....?
Who said it ? Doesn't matter who said it or who they said it to does it ? it's bang out of order either way.
I was agreeing with you for once!

Exactly. No defence even if he did apologise.

  • It's certainly a nasty thing to say.

But then again, this is Bellamy we're talking about here, so I seriously doubt it was all one way traffic. Hardly known for being one of footballs good guys, is he?
  • Exactly, I'm still sure it's not the whole story.

I'd have the same opinion if it was the other way round. I do agree Kiely should have made the move to apologize but we have no idea how that call was arranged it seems like Given was a go-between and Bellamy could have insisted he call Kiely up (so he could arrange for his mates to listen). Ultimately I think the situation is resolved because Kiely apologized (many wouldn't) and from the Bellamy text appeared to be genuine.

  • A repulsive comment from Kiely...and to think he said it whilst wearing our clubs shirt. Utterly disgusting and I don't blame Bellamy one iota for not excepting Kielys' prompted half hearted `apology'....I wouldn't either. Unfortunately i'll never think the same of him again.
  • It might not be 'the whole story' but it should never get as far as saying something like that.

  • It's one comment made on a football field years ago. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you look hard enough you can find dirt on anyone. People saying they won't look at kiely the same need to take a good hard look at themselves and throw away their copy of the daily mail. I'm sure you've said and done things you haven't been proud of and regretted it. The fact that this is an isolated incident says a lot as well, people saying what if it was joey Barton - Barton says crap like that every week, kiely obviously only said it once and regretted it. Bellamy got given his number by shay given. Could it be that kiely texted given asking for bellamy's number to apologise and Bellamy then did a billy big mates move in phoning him up? Remember we've only got one side of the story.

I think its that fact he's (was) a Charlton favourite and now people are saying that now he's not, in my opinion, understandably so. What its got to do with reading the Mail is a blaaady mystery to me, you ain't gotta be a "Tory" to be offended by such a thing!

Too many apologists for Kiely on here, who did seem suitably contrite, but then he had little option to be otherwise.
As for Bellamy 'not being known as one of football's good guys', I think his setting up of the football academy in Sierra Leone proves otherwise.

He was strongly advised by all and sundry not to become involved in such a project with concerns for his personal safety as well as the financial implications, but he went ahead with it regardless.
The academy places as much importance in education as well as football - if you don't attend classes, you don't play - and Bellamy has sunk £1.6m of his own money into the project.

He has behaved loutishly at times, which he seems to have grown out of,but in a time when many footballers are considered
vain, boorish, overpaid and selfish,Bellamy does strike me as being a' good guy'.

  • I said that he's not known as being one of footballs good guys. This thread proves that.

Not saying that view is right or wrong, but he's generally not known like that - particularly back in those days.

Are you referring to Keily or Bellamy ?
  • Kiely behaved like a twat and probably deserves his public humiliation, but frankly only an egotistical little turd like Bellamy would a) broadcast Kiely's apology to his teammates for a giggle and b) gloat about it years later in his bio.
Lack of class all round, I think
  • No one has ever claimed Bellamy had class, but a lot of us thought Deano had, so disappointing that we are brought back to reality. Still, I think I'll survive this disappointment.

You're quite right it is a repulsive comment. And you're right that Bellamy didn't have to accept the apology. But if he wasn't going to accept an apology, why go phoning up looking for one?

  • Of course it should never have been said, if that's what WAS said. I just get the feeling we're not being told the whole truth.
  • Out of interest, has Kiely come out and said anything about it?

We have such a perfect make up of members on CL.

It's so brilliant how nobody has ever said anything offensive to anyone.

Yep. Starting with the Admin - a shining example to us all.

Yeah, I've said and done some pretty out of order things in my time and if any of my fans choose to publicly comdemn me for them and not be my fans any more, then they can feel free!

Saying that, I've nver wished cancer on anyones family members.......
  • Surprised it doesn't happen more often with footballers. I'm sure Bellamy has said worse in his time.

Wishing death of a family member is a bit low though...it's only a game after all.
  • I doubt Bellamy has said worse

Offensive is one thing, wishing cancer on someone's mother FFS is well out of order.

Jesus, in my days as a lumbering centre forward and 68mph aggressive fast bowler I exchanged plenty of words with opponents but nothing even close to what Kiely said.

To be honest if he said that in League or Union he'd have been filled in before full-time.
  • Absolutely gutted about this. Know a few non-Charlton fans who have met Deano independently and said he was an absolutely top man.

If he has genuinely said that, I find it truly shocking.
  • ...it's only a game after all.

    And a performance based job.
If saying that makes Bellamy miss the net then..

  • I can only assume that you and some others on cl have never lost a parent to cancer like i and many others. Dont care what your job is family comes first. When my mum died last year, my work gave me all the time i needed. Hence putting her ahead of my performance which has a greater effect on the financial performance and therefore job security of the company. IF true, then in my eyes kiely would be scum end of. The IF being he key word of course.
