Has anyone asked Dean on Twitter about it? He's usually good at replying.

It's a god awful thing to say and I'd go ape if someone said something similar about a family member but do we really think he really wanted Bellamy's mum to die? That by no means makes it right of course but I think if we all recounted all of the conversations we had with everybody over the past 10 years I bet we could appall people the world over with things said if it was made public.

I agree with your making the crucial distinction between words and intent. We all agree the words are vile, but if you were to ask the man ten minutes later "Did you really mean what you said?", he will say: "No, of course not! I regret my stupidity in the heat of the battle."

Yeah, lets blurt out insults like that at anyone and everyone, then just say after 'sorry' and that 'I didn't mean it'.

Keily and Bellamy aside, if someone said the same to me, I wouldn't wait to weigh up if they meant it or not!
How many times do we exclaim "I'm gonna kill you!" out of sheer frustration? No sane person would understand this to be a genuine threat, in just the same way that if Deano were asked about whether his outburst was really meant (if indeed he did say it), he'd respond: "Don't be ridiculous! They were foolish words said in the heat of battle."

Quite frankly, I'm surprised that this lurid extract - aired in the press to generate sales of the book - has provoked such ire towards Deano from Charlton Lifers. Any suggestion of Bellamy suing Kiely for slander is just plain nonsense: there is no defamation in the alleged outburst, and no court in the land is going to sit in judgment on a few harsh words heard by nobody. One or two previous contributors have very wisely made the Biblical allusion in warning of the perils of "casting the first stone". Those who feel such disgust and anger towards Deano should take a long, hard look at themselves.

I cannot believe some are trying to justify it. Really nonsensical.

    This

If it had been a spanner or a nigel player, those defending Kiely with crys of banter, heat of battle, hes a decent bloke really, I'm sure he didn't mean it, would be all over it.
Charlton legend or not, bang out of order, and he deserved to be put on his ass at the time by Bellamy, and I cant stand that little runt.

People aren't trying to justify it. People are saying we've all said and done things we're not proud of. To judge some one from one moment of complete stupidity when they've consistently been a decent person says more about you than that person IMO.

Arguably it says more about how idiotic it is judging other teams players harshly over things like that.
  • Sorry but saying 'Im gonna kill you' is nothing like saying 'I hope your mum dies of cancer'.

@Kentaddick; people aren't trying to justify it? Look again....

    Agree entirely.

    Exactly this

Yeah cause you know Dean Keily really well and this us the first and only time he's said this kind of thing. What are you saying it makes us because we're disgusted with what he is supposed to have said?

Apologies, Kentaddick - the above quote was yours, but was misattributed to me when I agreed in response.

You've got this completely arse about tit.
  • I think there are a million things Keily could have said "in the heat of battle" none of which include what he is alleged to have said. If he said those things I think it shows quite a lot about keilys character. I can't think of a single excuse for saying it tbh.
  • There's simply no defence for Kiely's actions here - if true - but I'm surprised that nobody is having a pop at Bellamy.

I was one of those who had bought the line that he wasn't the scumbag he seemed to be. I might even have bought the book. However, I won't bother now.

Throwing around toxic stories like this - and Kiely isn't the only "victim" - simply to generate book sales is about as low as it gets in my view. It doesn't matter where the proceeds go.

Exactly, maybe accusing people of trying to justify it is the wrong word, trying to excuse it probably better suited because its Kiely, my argument still stands, if it were a spanner, nigel, Joey Barton et al.

Fantastic how some are now trying to spin it that it says more about those judging Kiely than it does about him for saying it, no excuse whatsoever for saying it.

  • I don't believe it for a second. Absolute rubbish.

No it isn't and yes it does.

Lets wait and see what Keily does. For all we know he may be talking with his lawyers right now. My guess though is that given the potential for DK to sue the arse off CB if its not true, I suspect it might regrettably be accurate.

  • Some interesting views on this thread. For me, yes he probably said it and I suspect that there's some history between the two underlying it, that may have played a part. Highly inappropriate on Deano's part, absolutely 100%, and equally I suspect Deano knew instantly he'd crossed a line but didn't handle it well. Not going to defend him at all.

What I struggle with to an extent is that there will be people castigating Deano for this who will happily stand there screaming dogs abuse at players AND their family. I am not equating the two at all but to call Mrs Murphy a whore is also highly offensive behaviour to me (and him presumably) but was written off as "banter". What I'm saying is that I struggle to understand some peoples moral compass I suppose.
  • For those of you calling for Bellamy to sue - The law regarding defamation, both slander and libel, refers to words "likely to lower the standing of the recipient in the eyes of his peers". Or words to that effect; perhaps a legal Lifer can quote chapter and verse. So, who precisely is defamed by Kiely's alleged remark? Bellamy? Bellamy's mother? His grandmother? There's no case.

No................ People are not saying Bellamy can sue, they're saying that if the allegations in the book are not true, Keily can sue Bellamy!

Wow. That really does sum up the attitudes of a society that has forgotten how to talk, reason and is desperate to squeeze money out of every thing and person they can. Maybe because our suing culture has not yet reached American levels yet? Maybe because he doesn't want to bring further attention to it? Maybe because it's only just come out yet and he hasn't started proceedings yet?

    Got it, Big Rob!

  • At a BBQ this afternoon with neighbours, one of them played professional Rugby League with the Brisbane Broncos in the 90's.

@d you are struggling to breathe let alone sledge people."

I am not saying Kiely is the worst person in the world for saying what he said, it was probably a one off, but it is shocking none the same.
