We know that Powell would always pick what he considered to be the best team regardless of what pressure the owner put on him, so I believe the decision to play Poyet when he did was based purely on who else was available. ie Stephens going.

I can't see any reason he would stay now.

I don't boo any ex players, but there is a select list of those I will clap - Bent, Lisbie, Shelvey, Jenkinson would all get heartfelt applause from me if they turned up at the Valley with an opposing team. Poyet, if he left now would not! He could do what Shelvey did at the very least!

Why would he stay? He may feel that the CAFC he would have been loyal to no longer exists. It's very very disappointing but the 'word' about the network and treatment of both managers and players will be widespread in football circles. Our brand is tainted.

The fans who voted for him to be player of the year and forked out money for Valley gold, the club that nutured his talent and gave him his chance at a perfectly reasonable age. Lots of reasons - although greed and lack of gratitude are not.

I have got to say I think he will go. Riga's departure has blown our last chance of retaining him.

We have been hearing about his apparent departure ever since he joined the academy. I remember reading that Gus placed him at Charlton because it meant he could continue with his education uninterrupted and that he was going to joined Arsenal at 17 .Fortunately that didn't happen.

On the subject of them working together. I think it is plausible he could follow his father. Last season when the rumours about a possible move were floated it seemed strange to me because Diego had not made his first team debut . I hadn't appreciated then that this was probably more about contractual issues than playing two youngsters Cousins and Poyet in the same team.

The way I have interpreted the father and son working together scenario , it was around Diego making progress in an academy set up on his own . Now he might be considered a more established player I think Gus would view it differently.

He has already fixed himself up with a premiership team - of that I am sure. Only waiting for contract to expire in June. What a classless way to start your career.

    Unsurprising, but very disappointing nonetheless.

Might be wise to see what he does before you slag him off.

I'm slagging off what I think - I am sure- he will do - if he doesn't the criticism doesn't apply.

I can see where this thread is heading. If Diego leaves it's because of RD. If Diego signs it's in spite of RD.

I'm sure he'd have loved to have signed an extended contract last year
He may have suffered an injury ,loss of form last season and be on the football slag heap
That didn't happen and he's played well and rewards us by helping us stay up
Now he can maximise for himself his potential earnings at this point , the route he chooses may not be the best one but he has to do what he/his advisers consider is in his best interests
I'm sorry but I'm with him , when he's 40 and got no job who's gonna help pay those bills , they do keep coming after you've stopped earning , look at Freddie Flintoff making a comeback in 20/20 for Lancashire , it will be because his sundries need paying not for the love of the game
Good luck to Diego whatever route he chooses , hopefully he'll stay at this arm of the Belgian circus

good comment oohaah… I want Diego to stay I really do, I've enjoyed watching him develop with the rest of the academy lads over the past 4 years, however,, if he does go then good luck to him, the club should not be 'churlish' about it, because in reality it should reflect on the inability of there previous regime in not securing his talent earlier on and even then I suspect his knowledgable father has been advising him rather well in these matters Good Luck Diegs hope you stay though :)

Off to work now (ouch... Pain!) but I was talking to him for about an hour and shared one or seven beers with him so I'll post later.

I'd be surprised if he told you the full story. I will wait to hear more but would be amazed if you know more than is already "out there"

Considering what's "out there" is absolute zilch...

Very one eyed supporters type view. I doubt you trouble yourself much with the dozen or so players that get released every year. The way any club can prevent players walking away out of contract is to put them under contract. Don't attempt to do that after he demonstrates his value is several times what we can pay him. We played poker badly. The player will reflect that we left our options open so we could bin him in a few weeks if he didn't make the grade. If he leaves now he's not being classless. People that criticise him for doing so are showing a ridiculous lack of empathy.

As a long term valley gold subscriber I'd be disappointed if we piss away the best prospect that has come out of the academy since Parker. But, the fault is with the club not having him tied down in 2013. I cannot believe that experts watching him play last year couldn't see that there was a player there that would be championship quality, at least.

Addickted2TheReds has obviously taken advantage of young Diego when drunk and has forced him to sign a new contract.

What Shelvey did was a magnificent gesture towards the club, but I really don't understand why we'd expect other players to do the same. We've had at least three different boards/owners in Poyet's time at the club and are now part of an international syndicate. We might like to think that any money gained from him signing a contract extension would go into the club coffers but there's no guarantee of that. We have a chairman that is in it to make money; Diego Poyet plays football to make money. Why should he do something with the aim of making a multi-millionaire even richer? Whilst I expect that Diego is pretty well heeled compared to your average teenager, his personal finances are nowhere near the Duchâtelet league. Poyet has got to do what's best for him, not what's best for a Belgian tycoon or for anyone else. I personally hope he signs a new contract, but not so that Charlton's owners can pick a few crumbs up off the table, but because he genuinely wants to play for us.

To be honest mate, if there were revealing conversations, I don't think you should share them.

I'm guessing he would feel anything he told you was in confidence and it could have the effect of making other players clam up in front of fans who they know a little better. Also, your girlfriend isn't going to be best pleased.

Just keep your own counsel (if, indeed, he said anything of substance) - it won't change the outcome for the rest of us, most of whom I would imagine think he's going to leave.

Where was the class in letting his contract run down?

When a player breaks a contract to try and move elsewhere, that's classless.

When a player decides to move on when their contract expires, that's also classless.

    They simply can't win!

    Hmmm.

I thought he would have signed by now.

I assumed the deciding factor for Poyet was if he got relegated or not. I expected, once we confirmed we were staying up, that a contract would be signed fairly quickly.

Poyet knows there is a host of clubs that would take him and probably pay him higher wages.

I still think the best option for Poyet himself is to stay here and develop as a player.

He, like the rest of us, probably thought we would have Jose Riga as manager. Not some nobody who he has never heard of.

    Agree.

And if there are no longer in the club's plans at the end of the contract they are let go and dismissed as "dead wood" by some.

Yes, some players get very well rewarded for doing something they enjoy but it is a cruel profession.
