  • Watched it last night, very good and the effects were stunning but I think the response to this episode has been way over the top.

Whilst you hear of piles of bodies, and subsequent waves having to trample the dead and the dying, I've never heard of a kessel using an impassable wall of bodies to close the cauldron.

Frankly it was an idiotic battle. Any General would want some news on when Blucher would arrive. Nearly all battles happened in pulses. Whilst I enjoyed Snow in the melee, frankly the wider battle strategy was poorly realised.

    I hope you're a war historian...

    Pulses or waves?

From watching many a medieval war documentary #nerd I can confirm battles were fought in waves, as was this one.

The wall was not completely impassable, people were climbing it and being shot by archers or stabbed by the swordsmen on the other side.
  • Narrative led show???? Ah as opposed opposed to factual documentaries on discovery, that are erm all scripted as to an erm discovery narrative that was in countless previous works. Genius.

I'm guessing Martin's description of the battle will have a little more Medieval battlefield strategy along with his string of words in sentences. It was fun. Pre-Potsdam giants or not it'd be nice to show a little more coherent storytelling. I mean ffs one giant ain't 3 dragons.
  • Those long lances that impaled the encircled army of Jon Snow. Why didn't they just cut the ends of with their swords ?

Could you explain what was incoherent about the storytelling? It was certainly more coherent than this post, cos I haven't got a clue what you're driving at in the first paragraph.

Seen as you demand elementary singular coherence, the simplicity of the first paragragh is driving towards that all shows factual or not are narative led shows.

  • I thought Monday's episode was one of the most stunning pieces of TV I have ever seen.
  • Honestly, my favourite thing about tv shows like this is when the amateur war historians come out of the woodwork to shout 'that wouldn't happen!' These show have huge budgets and countless advisers, they don't just randomly write a battle scene, but there's always an accounts manager in Farnham who thinks he knows how the battle featuring a giant really would have gone down. My favourite is Generation Kill. Look up any video on YouTube of that show and you'll see countless people in the comments moaning about how unrealistic the scenes are, how a sniper would never use that kind of scope, how the guns sound wrong. The kicker? Not only do they have great war advisers, one of the characters in the show is actually played by the real life marine who was in these situations. Still the comments come.

The only response I have to this is that one of my history lecturers was the main adviser for kingdom of heaven and quit because of Ridley Scott.

Whenever he would ask for historical direction and my lecturer would say X, Y, Z wouldn't happen that way the director would turn around and go well where is your evidence, all you have is what was written down there it could have happened my way and not have been written down.

By the point he quit he had his name removed from the credits as he didn't want to be associated with it.

Sometimes you can't let history get in the way of a good story. But KoH wasn't a good story lol.

They had the same problems on Independence Day apparently

It's always the wouldn't/couldn't distinction in the end. I understand people being annoyed about something totally impossible happening but not something unlikely. My dad always moans in war films saying things wouldn't happen when they're actually just quite unlikely. The thing is though, the whole reason we're watching a film is because we want to see cool, unlikely stuff happen instead of boring one-sided fights. Everything needs to be planned to make it cinematic and interesting. Otherwise you may as well just read a history book if you're looking for what tended to really happen
  • That was a class - just caught up. Is it something about the formula where they give us the best battle scenes in the penultimate episode. Happened last season as well......

I don't know which one was my favourite. F***** excellent viewing.

It can't have much longer left to run now though. All the 'evil' bar the bad uncle greyjoy is kind of dealt with beneath the wall. Damerys to get her seven kingdoms and the white walkers to be disposed of. Anything else are just side plots to play out I guess

Good things reported for tonight... Great episode that with less violence rivals the last.

Hardhome was episode 8 I think.
  • Holy Shit.
Best show on TV hands down.

Just as a side note what an incredible actor the girl who plays Lyanna Mormont is.

That was one of the best episodes I've seen.

    SPOILERS*****

The first twenty minutes were incredible television, even better than last week's battle.

The way Olenna ripped into the sand snakes was beautiful and satisfying. And that "twist" with Varys, although expected, takes on a whole new dimension with Olenna on the scene as well.

    R+L=J CONFIRMED!!!!

    The King In The North!

Arya getting her vengeance on Walder Frey...

And Sam cracking jokes at the Citadel.

  • Just wow. I don't normally bang on about episodes, I've found the battle of the bastards opinins way over the top for instance. Good episode but I just think a little bit overrated.

This finale however, unreal. One of the best episodes easily and the first 10 minutes is good enough for a big episode ending imo. The music was brilliant, scenes brilliant. I'm gutted I've got to wait another 10 months or whatever it is but at least there will be other stuff to watch to fill the void.

Honestly 10/10 episode, really was worried they'd struggle to close the season out but after the first 20 or so minutes I knew they'd got it right.
  • That was one of the best episodes I've seen.

All that and they still found time for a bit library porn.

6 frigin' years waiting for those dragons to something and within 90 mins of them finally showing up, she's on a boat for Westeros.
  • Varys gets around a bit doesn't he? One minute he is Dorne then he is on a boat sailing back to Westeros with Dani etc.

    Didn't see Tommen doing that!

And I got goose bumps when Lyanna Mormont started the King in the North stuff. Great episode and it is all finally starting to come together.
  • Wow! that was an incredible episode

Margaery goes on the list of surprise deaths, I thought she'd be around a bit longer after they'd set the scene for her deceiving the high sparrow

Lyanna Mormont is just amazing, Jon was going to be king whether he wanted to or not once she'd stood up
  • jon targaryen! King of the north!

Preferred it to last week's one.

It seems like it should end within a couple of episodes next season so there are going to be some big twists it seems.

Jaime for one will probably go against Cersei.

Littlefinger will team up with someone again to take on the North.

Bran still seems a bit pointless other than a mechanism to create "ahhhh" moments.

This was the only bit that annoyed me.

    The rest was superb.
  • GoT is very liberal with its passages of time. We don't know how many days/ weeks passed between certain scenes. While it does seem as though they follow on, it isn't the case. So Varys could have shuttled about, but they were pushing it a little bit.

Given that Bran is literally a marked man, and Benjen talked about the magic of the wall, is anyone else wondering if Benjen is a double-agent? Getting Bran to the wall so he can mess it up.

Also, could Bran really be that stupid as to not put two-and-two together? The branding on his arm fucked up the raven's cave, and the wall uses the same magic. Bit mad that he can't figure that one out.

Not 100% confirmed just 99% suggested, you couldn't hear the name she said. I think they are leaving the 100% to the next book, but I like the way they did it.
