So to those who are slagging him off already, let's give the lad a chance to prove himself with us, please.
Could you point me in the direction of these people slagging him off please. Every time we acquire someone we get threads with comments like this but I never actually find the comments from people slagging off the players!

A player who played 4 Europa League games last season.
28 appearances for Liege last season; 41 appearances and 6 goals the season before. 12 goals and 103 appearances in total.
Capped by Belgium at U21 level.
Apparently cost Liege €1.32 million (over a million quid in English) from Mechelen, where Bobby Peeeters was his coach. Only 5'11" and a half - unfortunately fails the Charlton Life test.
I truly despair - under Parkinson nearly every signing was on a 12 month contract because it was all we could afford. Did it impact on their ability to at least try and compete on our behalf. The lad is coming on a initial loan because a) it means we do not have pay a fee b) neither he or we will know how he will adapt to the Championship c) neither he or we know he and his family will settle in the UK d) neither he or we know how well the club will fare over the next 12 months.
He then has the comfort of returning to Liege if things do not work out and /or moving on with the parent club receiving some remuneration into the bargain. However if it does work out he may well stay for considerably longer!
So far from being strange it is entirely logical at nearly every level.
Can't say one way or another whether he is a good signing, hopefully he is, but is the deal not equally open to the interpretation that he is deemed surplus to requirements at SL and sending him to us is a way for RD to try to get more value from an existing contractual commitment? Surely the point of his network is that decisions are made for the wider benefit of the clubs/owner, not just for one club. That doesn't preclude them being good for Charlton, but equally they may be made for the benefit of Standard Liege/RD and the balance between the two will be different in each case.
What is different this time is that Peeters knows Buyens and has played alongside him . Powell only knew Ajdarevic and everyone accepts he was a success despite his fitness problems. Our new Head Coach will stand or fall on his own judgements of which this will be one.
Not sure I buy that. It is obvious that Peeters will not have the level of influence over signings that previous "managers" have had, not least because of the clear preference for network and Belgian-connected players. Of course, he may well be keen on this guy, but generally I don't think there is any basis for confidence his judgements will be decisive.
I also think "everyone accepts AA was a success" is pushing it. Indeed, it wasn't even the unqualified view of the playing management (post-Powell).

Who didn't rate him?
I accept that fitness was an issue with AA. With his assists against Leeds , Forest and QPR and the goal against Yeovil he made a decisive contribution to our survival .When he played it provided a creative influence which we otherwise lacked.
Back to Peeters , I accept it is a different model which he is working to but so far the rumour mill is pointing towards players who have links with him , I can't believe that we would sign players he did not rate.
If we work on the basis that Roland isn't stupid, we can assume he has learnt from his errors in January. So I don't think there will be players pushed onto Peeters who he doesn't want; that does not mean, of course, he will get all the players he wants.

AA is a talented player and I'd agree that he contributed to the team's survival. I don't know about decisive, since Sordell and Harriott would also have a claim and they can't all be decisive, by definition. However, I think it's too easy to ascribe AA's lack of fitness to illness or lack of match practice. He had enough time to get fit. Another view, put to me by someone senior within the club who would know, is that AA doesn't put in the necessary work. Hence my comment. But if he was fitter I suppose we would never have seen him in the first place.
It will be interesting to compare our starting line up in August with the squad who played the last few games under Riga. I don't know how accurate transfermarkt is but if we sign Buyens and Vetokele then it appears that the value of our first XI has just increased from £8M to nearly £9M and that includes the departure of Sordell, Ajdarevic, Dervite and Hamer valued at £3.3M between them. I believe Transfermarkt does a revaluation at some point in July so let's see what happens to the value of the network players who have now played at Liege and SE7. And also to the young players who made such a major contribution last season.
Last season's midfield were all valued around 4-600k so if we are now bringing in players rated 2m+ then this has to be a big step up even if there is a margin of error of say 20%. He was signed for £1.3M three years ago. We know with Thuram there was a horrible mis-calibration but I think the valuations of the other network players was accurate or perhaps just a tad high when compared to our championship squad. Where I'm going with this is that before a ball is kicked next season we will be able to see what the total squad valuation adds up to... and compare it to the whole division. £20M+ is what is needed for a challenge for the play-offs... £15M+ would be a step in the right direction.
Personally, I had hoped for a few £1-1.5M players on loan (like Sordell) so for a player who was valued at €3M just 12 months ago to sign up is way above my expectations. More of the same please and then improving on last season's 18th is not such a big ask after all.
On the overall size of squad I don't think many fans believe we need to carry 40 odd players like we have been for the last couple of seasons. Looks like a typical Championship squad has about 26 or 27 players. So perhaps we only need a few more signings if Morrison, Poyet and Gomez all sign up. The link with Liege and the other network clubs not only speeds up player movement but also provides an insurance for emergency loans so we don't need to keep so many players on the books in case of injury or loss of form.
This time last year the club was up for sale and one of the main selling points according to the then owners was that so many players were out of contract thus enabling new owners to start afresh. 12 months on we have new owners, the overwheming majority of the 20 odd players on the books are 22 and under, and signed up for two or three years. What matters now is who is added to this squad and the likes of Buyens, Vetokele signing up plus rumours of others is really refreshing.
Who knows - if they get some more names in and we have a decent squad by mid July then perhaps they can have another crack at marketing season tickets to lapsed fans? At £250 a throw for the cheapest seats available I would hope to see quite a few fans signing up.

Sorry, Yoni. Too short.
;o)
Genuine question.
Good to see him moving on.
Edit - Turns out it was Yoffi, not Yoni.
Still think he could do a job for us.
