My first Charlton idol was Paul Williams, but for all his talents he was only ever a double figures striker albeit in the top flight.
Whytey was the first striker we had during my lifetime to break the magic 20 goals a season mark and he was such an exciting player capable of magicing a goal out of nowhere with a bit of skill or flair which set him apart from other CAFC goalscorers like Mendonca and Hunt. Whyte didn't have the same electric pace, but he was maybe not too dissimilar in style to Igor.
He's not had quite the same influence on our history as some of those players, or at least isn't usually credited with it, but those goals helped keep us in Div 1 at a time when we desperately needed the revenue, and his flair helped keep it exciting in SE7.
As a 10/11 year old I loved this guy to bits and he was one of the reasons I kept travelling down to London with my Dad instead of ditching the Addicks for Villa or Man Utd like most of my mates in Kiddy. Genuinely saddened to hear this news.

This, except for the weird bit about man utd and villa at the end. And I must be a lil bit older than you as Paul Williams was my first hero. RIP David, thank you for the mostly spectacular memories.
I was always excited to see him play and was over the moon when he signed permanently. David Whyte and Carl Leaburn were a good pairing. Had ocassion to meet him a couple of times after he stopped playing. Really sad to hear the news tragic at such a young age. RIP David.
RIP David, that game against Leicester will always be remembered, not only was it on my birthday we stopped them going up in front of thousands of their fans Never forgotten
One of the best strikers I had the pleasure to watch in a Charlton shirt .RIP David gone but will not be forgotten, my thoughts and prayers are with his family .
I've just been showing one of my boys a few of his goals. Not just a good goal scorer, but a scorer of good goals. A real talent who should have achieved so much more. Thoughts with his family and those who knew him.
How sad, a real talent and like so many have said, that rare thing, a natural finisher who played for Charlton. Somewhere I still have my white away shirt from 94-95 with Whyte 10 on the back. If I can still get it on 20 years on I will wear it tomorrow as a tribute. RIP.
I'm 35 now so I was really getting into football when David Whyte played. I remember him being a very talented footballer who could do things other players on the pitch couldn't. The goals against Watford and Leicester stand out for me.
As others have said, such a talented and exciting player.
Am pleased to see some of his goals posted on here - both to remind those of us who saw him play how good he could be, and help others who wouldn't have watched him appreciate his time with the club.
I hope David's family can take some comfort from people's memories of him and look forward to hearing his name chanted again on Saturday.
I always think about the opening game to a season once when we lost 5-2 to Oldham. It was a bad result but I was left really optimistic about the fact one of our strikers scored two goals away from home.
I'd like to know if there has been any players that have crossed from the dark side of south London to us to become one of our own like david whyte can't think of many off the top of my head

Chris Powell? Although not directly. John Humphrey?
Only just seen this as now sadly confirmed. A fine, fine player who probably deserved a chance with a top club. Terrible news and thoughts tonight are with his friends and family.
