  • For some reason I have always remembered him celebrating a goal in front of the Covered End. Can't really remember the goal itself or even which game but I just remember Whitey shouting "I love ya!!" to the crowd when we were singing his name. This was at the time he wasnt getting as many games under Curbs and he didnt play that many after that one. Just weird how that one has always stuck in my mind.
  • So sad. Was my first hero, like many on here. Seems way too young, 42 is no age.

    RIP David
  • awful news, really liked him as a player. does anyone know what was wrong with him? ridiculously young at 43!
  • Rip David
  • Terrible news my thoughts are with his family and friends in this time of sadness! Great memories of this amazing talent loved him RIP David remembered always
  • So shocked and saddened to hear this. For a season or two it seemed like we had another goal scoring star on our hands, he was red hot. He won't be forgotten at the Valley. RIP David and thanks for the wonderful memories.
  • Terrible news.

The Mail have used a picture of Leaburn V Newscastle. Idiots.
  • Great to see that pic of him in the White/Purple/Green Viglen shirt.

A man that stood out + a shirt that stood out = very fitting.
  • Very sad news.
    Condolences to family and friends.

    RIP David Whyte
  • So sad RIP - A great player.

  • Sad News indeed.
    a Goal every 2.5 matches.
May of been for a short time, but one of the big talents to play for cafc.
19L 2cup 21 total 94/95. In the record books for ever.
.Not many players have had the crowd chanting their name from three parts of our ground.

    RIP David Whyte

  • Saw this news on social media early this morning. Hoped it wasn't true but sadly it is. RIP David, one of Charlton's heroes.
  • I suppose the saddest thing is through judging the responses, David never probably got to appreciate the scope of his impact / affection by CAFC supporters once he'd moved on.

    Agreed.

Because of his goalscoring, he seems to be pretty much the first memorable Charlton idol for any supporters who are now in their mid twenties to early thirties who started going to games in the 1992-1996 period before the Mendonca and Kinsella era.

I was racking my brains and I genuinely can't think of anyone else whose name I sang and a player I loved as much as a kid as David Whyte during those first 2-3 years of going to Charlton.
  • Pretty sure Whyte gave me my first Cafc memory, in a totally uneventful nil nil draw with Millwall he hit the bar from distance and it's always stuck with me.
    RIP David.
  • This is such sad sad news. David Whyte came onto the scene at a difficult time in the clubs history, a time we had little to shout about. At that time he gave us hope, he made us happy, he gave us such joy.

In 25 years of watching Charlton I can count the number of naturally gifted & talented strikers to don the shirt on one hand. The type of player who never feels pressure. To which scoring goals comes utterly instinctive. David Whyte could conjure up a goal from absolutely nowhere. For me, he's up there with Mendonca and Bent as our best strikers since Derek Hales.

I used to love singing 'Walking along.....singing a song.....walking in a Whytey wonderland'.

Rest in peace David Whyte. Forever an unforgettable CAFC legend
  • So sad RIP David Whyte.
  • How very sad. A very good striker for our club! Rip David whyte :-(
  • Such sad news and saw him score many great goals for Charlton one against Swindon I believe is really sticking in my mind.RIP David

  • Gutted. Absolutely gutted. The goal against Leicester was magic, if the one that hit the crossbar against Millwall had gone in he would have been a proper legend.

Just way too young. RIP, Whytey and thanks for making the trips to Upton Park so memorable.
  • A key player in the club's development in the 90's.

An excellent 'discovery' by whoever scouted him in '92, what was the story of his arrival at Charlton?

I recall thinking Charlton had got him for a snip when he signed permanently a few years later.
  • I wanted to come on here today and see thus thread was sunk beyond existence

Now I am truly saddened by the thread as it means it's true

Rip a proper gutted nla today
  • David isn't just a legend at out club, palace are also in mourning. David didn't have the easiest time in life by what I read and heard, be it depression drugs or whatever, I'm not sure what it was so don't quote me on this.

Maybe a benefit match between us and palace with old players and new from both side and all proceeds go to either David's family and/or the cause of his death
  • Like a few others I tweeted his brother Darren with my condolences. Obviously nothing can take away immediate pain, but he seems to be grateful for kind words of support. If any of you are on Twitter I think he would be happy to have you share some of the great memories you have listed on here. @deecure37

  • Wonderful footballer. Unplayable on his day. One of the few effective maverick flair players that we ever had. So sorry to hear that he has gone.
