'Charlton, second bottom in the first division, were roared on by a full house of 15,000, who paid record receipts of 150,000, and thanks to David Whyte's brilliantly-taken first-half strike the South Londoners will be in for another jackpot in the Anfield replay in three weeks' time.'
Agree, very sad. One thing I would ask.....I am not an 'IT' person - I struggle to send a text and post messages on here let alone anything else. If anyone knows or can update a Wikipedia page, please alter David Whyte's. Someone has taken the time today to change it to say 'he is now dead'. Think it could be worded far better, don't you?
Such a sad loss. Mentioned many times the moment he curled that winner in from the free kick v Brentford in the cup. The old covered end exploded.
Many great moments. Pompey away, Leicester at Selhurst, that lob v Watford and the long range one away at Swindon, and the Sunderland scissor volley featured earlier in this thread.
Gutted to hear this news and I want to pay my respects on Saturday. Hope to hear his name sung throughout the game. "David Whyte, Whyte Whyte"
Such sad news. I remember being delighted when we managed to get David, such a bargain as well, after an impressive loan spell. The first striker, for me, to get truly excited about since Derek Hales. Some of his goals and his technique were sublime and I'll remember that Leicester game for a long time yet.
So sorry that David has passed away. I don't know the background, but I hope he rests in peace and knows that he brought a lot of us, a lot of joy.
That is so disappointing - one of the few players who lit up that strange mid 90s period. Always played with a smile on his face and scored some wonderful goals. RIP David.

I don't usually partake in these threads but....... Great natural footballer who unfortunately for whatever reason was unable to push on to a higher level. Remember watching him fondly for us in his loan spell and was chuffed when we managed to sign him. Still to this day one of the most enjoyable players to watch I've seen in a Charlton shirt. RIP fella.
RIP, David. Very sad news. Before he got into football, he used to be a welder, where I used to work. Great talent on the pitch, had his demons off it.
No age whatsoever, one of my favourite players back in his day (everyone loves a goalscorer) and I hope to hear a loud rendition of his song on saturday.

Take care David Whyte, Whyte, Whyte!
Capable of genius on occasion and with more application, if that's the correct phrase, could have reached the very highest levels of the game.
Far, far too young.
He scored the winner in the first Charlton match I went to, strange to think that was just a couple days shy of 20 years ago.
The word 'talent' is bounded around a lot. This fella had bundles of it.
such a terrible terrible shame

My first game at the Valley, 96 Brentford in the cup, went home with his song ringing in my ears.
RIP David.

He was a bit before my time, but I was always aware of his talents from various videos and comments from fans.
RIP David.
