I remember that goal vividly. I had a dose of the flu and still went along to the game against my mums wishes sitting in the cold and damp. Was front row of the north stand behind the corner it went in and remember thinking what a stormer it was.
35 goals in 106 League and Cup games. Signed on loan from Crystal Palace March 1992 and scored on his debut away at Portsmouth in a 2-1 win on 31/3/1992 coming on as a sub for Garry Nelson during the first half.
Become the first Charlton player to score 20 or more league and cup goals in a season (21 1994/1995. No Penalties ) since Derek Hales (23 1980/1981 includes 4 penalties)after signing along with Paul Mortimer from Crystal Palace before the start of pre season 1994 in a deal that saw Darren Pitcher join Palace.
His last appearance in a Charlton shirt was against Stoke City on 18/1/1997 in a 2-1 home defeat. He was substituted at half time for John Robinson. His last goal for Charlton was away at Reading in a 2-2 draw at Elm Park on 11/1/1997.
Very very sad to hear.he was my first Charlton hero and probably the main player to keep me coming back to the valley r.i.p gone far to soon makes you realise how life can change so quick
Really remember that game against Leicester and being genuinely excited when we eventually signed him-he was fantastic that first season with us but never really hit those highs in the seasons following and his career petered out.
Curbs alluded to his troubles in his book so he's obviously been suffering for some time-this is tragic news though and I hope the club does something even just a tribute on the website. I'm sure they will.......
A real shame, proper enigmatic genius. Scored some outrageous goals, and had a great rapport with the crowd, a true hero.
An impeccably observed minutes' silence and a montage on the big screen of some of his goals on Saturday would be a fitting tribute, and would give an opportunity to those amongst us who were too young to see him play - you need to see what you missed.
A natural finisher, who was good with feet or head and could even bend in the odd free-kick. Made an instant impact for us and pretty sure he scored on his Palace debut (at Chelsea?) and against us in the League Cup at Selhurst (lost 3-1).
His goals were one of the things that kept us going during the Upton Park days. An extremely under-rated player in my opinion who I used to look forward to watching. Gave us 100% as far as I can remember. R.I.P.

I don't remember that deal but if that' s accurate, boy did we get the better deal...DW and Morts for Pitcher! Wow.
Unbelivable he went to my primary school , always remember the game against Leicester at upton park he tore them to bits . Very sad RIP .
He was in my year at John Ball. He had a reputation but was a good bloke underneath that. Went to his house once in the estate on Blackheath Hill. Great shame that Football didnt prove a way out for him longer term.
Very happy childhood memories of boasting to mates about David Whyte and singing his name. Out of those 35 goals straight off the top of my head there are numerous exceptional ones; Watford at home lob, Sunderland overhead kick, free kicks against Brentford and I think Stoke, Swindon away lob in the league cup, think he scored a good one away at Reading as well (may have been his last goal referred to above)... a player who genuinely made you hold your breathe when he got on the ball... very rare indeed at Charlton.
One of my most vivid memories of him is actually in 96/97 when we were struggling and I think losing at home to Bradford or somebody 0-2, and most of the ground was chanting "we want David Whyte, say we want David Whyte". A very talented player, and very sad that he couldn't translate it into a successful playing career and has now suffered such a tragically early death.
