Unbelivable he went to my primary school , always remember the game against Leicester at upton park he tore them to bits .
    Very sad RIP .

He was in my year at John Ball. He had a reputation but was a good bloke underneath that. Went to his house once in the estate on Blackheath Hill. Great shame that Football didnt prove a way out for him longer term.
That's right the estate was either heathside or lethbridge he went to morden mount then john ball,he was my younger brothers age bit if a rogue but even then u could see he had talent to play football very very sad so young .
  • Remember David chipping Kasey Keller at the Valley from outside the box, Keller was beaten all ends up but the ball just grazed the crossbar and went over.

Gone far, far too soon. RIP.

Not wanting to sound all Liverpool FC but do you think the club will do anything (minute silence/Applause) if confirmed?

I certainly hope so. I'd be very surprised if there wasn't, the club is usually pretty good on that front.

Speaking of Liverpool FC, he scored against them as well, league cup 96/97 at the valley

They'll probably wait and include it with the yearly minutes applause for everyone who died in the last year
  • Rip david. My first charlton hero. Way too young.
  • A sad loss. A really exciting, skillful and lively player at his best. Far to young and thoughts go out to to all of his family and friends.

I should think they probably will if it's confirmed before Saturday - maybe a chance to show his goal against Watford on the big screen before the game!

I've just remembered the time I met David Whyte. I must have been about six-years old and it was at a Junior Red party at Woolwich Leisure Centre (the glorified swimming baths with the snake slide coming out the side) and in my excitement I wandered up to a bloke that was the spit of David Whyte (I think it was his brother) and asked for his autograph, who then laughed and pointed over my shoulder to the real David Whyte who was standing right behind me. He was my absolute hero as a kid, and as many others have said here, he was the reason I kept asking my dad to take me back to Charlton every week. It's so sad.
  • Such a sad story. R.I.P.
  • Is this now 100pc confirmed as it has been pinned in the forum as an announcement?
  • Sad news. Too young. RIP. We hasn't had too many real quality strikers in my 30 years of going but DW was definitely one of the few.

  • Incredibly sad (as it is when anyone passes away, young or otherwise) as lots have said he was an absolute hero of mine as a youth and whilst I heard he was not having a great time of it the same can be said of a lot of ex-professional footballers.

Very, very sad rest in peace david whyte, whyte, whyte

  • RIP, David Whyte. Exciting, talented player.

Did he really join, with Paul Mortimer in a swap deal for Darren Pitcher? If that's right, no wonder Palarse hate us...
  • Very sad news. He was brilliant for us in his first loan spell and then in 94/95, a season well documented in Garry Nelson's Left Foot Forward book. It does seem he has had issues, at least they are no longer there to hurt him now.

I'm sure the club will do something on Saturday,
  • Also my first Charlton hero as a kid in the mid nineties.

A minute's silence (not applause) would be suitable on Saturday.

    RIP David Whyte Whyte Whyte
  • Wow amazing that to many of us he was our first charlton Hero.

I was just telling my son about him the other day.

    RIP David.
  • A real hero of mine back then as we were not used to seeing someone score the amount or quality of goals that he scored. RiP David Whyte Whyte Whyte
  • A talent hopefully now at peace with himself.

    R I P David.
  • if i remember correctly, after he started banging them in, a number of charlton fans organised a sarcastic sending of Thank You cards to Ron Noades for letting us have him on the cheap
  • Very sad news - RIP

  • Some goals that are top of mind for me:

    - the overhead kick v Sunderland that is on this thread
    - classy lob on the half volley home v watford
    - free kick in the cup (v Brentford ?)
    - goal at home to Liverpool in league cup
    - volley outside box on the run away to Swindon in league cup
  • Remember him scoring in our 2-1 win away at Pompey the year they got to the FA CUP semi-final, night game it was, a quality striker, so sad RIP
  • RIP David. He was a great player, especially to a youngster growing up supporting Charlton. He was the first player I really remember warming to.
  • edited September 2014
Curbs tells a great story about sending staff to get him out of bed 2 hours before kick off.

He was one of those players (like Benty) who you knew was going to score as they lined-up the shot.

Most of us will leave the planet without making much of a footprint - not true of this man.

    Thanks for the memories.
  • Terrible terrible news. RIP David Whyte.
  • Terrible, sad news. RIP David Whyte. One of the most exciting strikers to wear the Charlton shirt.
  • One thing for sure I will be singing his name of Saturday, I hope I'm not the only one

    Thanks for the memories

    Was thinking the same

    David Whyte Whyte Whyte !

  • Very sad to hear this. I still get that David Whyte, Whyte, Whyte song stuck in my head now. A real hero of my youth.
  • Very sad. RIP

He gave me the joy of me telling my children the crowd were singing about me!
