He remains the only Charlton players name I've ever had on the back of my shirt and I've still got the picture of me with him and Curbs from the Junior Reds Christmas party in the mid 1990's (any idea which season this was ? 1994/95) !

That's the 96 - 98 shirt - Christmas 1996 maybe?
This was back when we kept kits for two years (remember those days) so I'd guess Christmas 1996 as I wouldn't have been at secondary school in that pic
Damn. As others have said I was almost hoping that this was the result of one of those poor taste internet hoaxes that pop up from time to time. 43 is no age. Whyte was with us at a time when I wasn't able to get to many games, so my memories of him aren't as some of yours, but it was so nice to have a properly prolific goalscorer for a change. Thoughts are with his family and friends.
Incredible footballer, incredible talent, when he was in the first team would still be at Welling watching the reserves supporting his mates. Recalling all of the goals and they get better and better. RIP David Whyte Whyte Whyte.
I don't usually partake in these threads but....... Great natural footballer who unfortunately for whatever reason was unable to push on to a higher level. Remember watching him fondly for us in his loan spell and was chuffed when we managed to sign him. Still to this day one of the most enjoyable players to watch I've seen in a Charlton shirt. RIP fella.
This - better than I could've said...he was a big part of saying we've got our Charlton back...not too many 20 goal a season strikers in my lifetime.
The era of David Whyte at CAFC was long before I was a fan - but the genuine affection you guys all have for him shows how much he was loved and appreciated - and how sorely he will be missed. Condolences to family, frriends and fans. Requiescat in pace.
I remember standing on the corner of Floyd road before a match... down the hill comes this totally kitted out electric blue Renault 19 pumping out some sounds... a beaming David Whyte waving at us lads from the car window...I remember saying to my buddies that his arrival was a little closer to kickoff than expected!!! Really was my first Charlton hero...gutted to hear this news.
A truly gifted player , who played with style and grace ..... He passed through our Charlton lifes and lit them up . Gutted RIP David Whyte Whyte Whyte
RIP. Remember that Leicester game well, and also a night game at Upton Park where he scored a brace (unless my:mind's playing tricks) The only saving grace is that any pain/troubles are over now. Gutted tho.
Absolutely devastating news like others have said David was a real hero of mine growing up, he was probably the first striker for Charlton who I really looked up to. I was lucky enough to meet him and have my picture taken with him as a 9-10 year old at a junior reds day. Was sat in the covered end right behind the goal against Watford we all thought the ball was gonna go wide and hit us but watched it curl into the top corner of the net. RIP David Whyte Whyte Whyte a real hero of mine.
I have just got online after a few days away and seen this sad news. I recall David scoring at Fratton Park and the Addicks support going bonkers. One sometimes thinks of favourite, classy ex-players. David was both. The club should acknowledge his passing and afford us an opportunity to show our appreciation of him.
He was one of my first charlton heroes alongside bowyer. I was wearing cycle shorts at a very early age playing football and it was only because David Whyte wore them.
I will always remember meeting him for an autograph before Southend away one night and the big cheesey grin he gave when I asked if he could get a hat trick that game. At least he obliged with 1 goal! (the chip over the keeper)
I remember clearly the overhead kick he got against Sunderland February 1995. It was in the days before I had an ST. But that day I got free ticket as I was part of a schools group to get free tickets. That day I was in the West Stand as it was then right in the block near the Sunderland fans. I went to Thomas Tallis and a couple of weeks before that game Stevie Gritt come to our assembly. At the time I was in year 8 and 13 and a half at the time. We won that game 1-0 thanks to that overhead from David Whyte Whyte Whyte. Fantastic childhood memories from when I was still relatively care free.
Gutting news, like many here he was one of my first real heroes for the club as I started going in early/mid 90's.
What a lethal striker, always thought he was going to score every game and as a kid I still remember thinking "just give it to whyte" when we were playing.
I'm connected with Mike Ammann on LinkedIn and have had a few e-mails back on forth with him over the last few years regarding different things going on at Charlton. He now works as a Sales Director in the US. I got in touch with him as I wasn't sure if he had heard the unfortunate news. Here's a few things that he kindly said about David and the club:
"My memories of David were a unique character. He lived life by his own rules and typically had a smile on his face. He was a great talent on the field that could score goals for fun when he wanted to. But the David I will remember is the one that was always laughing and joking with his teammates."
"Wish I could be there Saturday to honor David and watch Charlton play my son's team, Watford.....................My hope is to see both clubs gain promotion and he receives a pro. That would be some season for sure."
I suppose the saddest thing is through judging the responses, David never probably got to appreciate the scope of his impact / affection by CAFC supporters once he'd moved on.
This has been eating at me for a few days now. As great as a thread like this is for his family, and any resulting gesture at The Valley (which I completely support) is, I just feel that we are, in some way, being 'cheated' out of being able to show the man, himself, how much he was appreciated long after he's gone (left the club), and at a time when he would not have expected it but might have been really grateful for it.
It makes me wonder if the club or the fans should do more to recognise former players - especially those that might, for what ever reason, not realise how highly respected they were, and still are.
As David was born a couple of months after me it feels more 'close to home' as he could (under different circumstances) have been in my class at school.
I don't want to say that threads like this are too little to late because they are not! However, I do wonder if there is anything we can do to recognise former players while they are able to benefit from it directly?
Apart from the goals, I remember him for having nice touches and fantastic ball control. He wasn't just a goal scorer, he was a great footballer, and at the time he was a stand out player in our team.
Great player exciting and made you believe you had a chance to win a game because he could pop up anywhere with a bit of skill and score a goal.RIP David whyte whyte whyte
