Bell - did ok today, but shouldn't be in a 1 day team for me Moeen Ali - keep, very good player, but pathetic run out today Hales - give him an extended run & see how he does Root - keep decent Morgan - get rid Taylor - keep. Ok terrible shot today, but has done decent up until today. Buttler - push him up the order.Ridiculous your best batsman is no 7 Woakes - not sure as he is improving Jordan - not sure, but not covinced Broad - he's been bowling too short in 1 day cricket for years, possibly under orders though. Anderson - looks good when he's not bowling too short
Oh and whatever we do, don't bring back that cock Pietersen.
Don't disagree with your assessment much. We had strong bowlers a few years ago. Our bowlers are now very ordinary. The batsmen will improve with time (as batsmen do) and the new crop will be ok. At test level as well, I see no one coming along getting close to Anderson. Woakes looks ordinary as a bowler, Jordan Ok with ability to pick up a wicket when things go quiet and Finn just too expensive if batting is easyish. A few tough years, I fear. We are just short of mature talent.
Pieterson would be my Captain. Your best one day player should be the captain - if any other players are not happy with that, they can do one. I think you have to look at 20-20 to find the players for the future - Hales played today , but it was his first knock - he should have been in from the start. Jason Roy of Surrey would have been worth a look. But If I was seeking out the players to form the next England one day team, I'd look at the 20-20 stats to see who hit the most 6s and who the most economical bowlers were. That would be a good starting point, rather than looking at the test team and taking one or two out. In one day cricket, you can't knock it around anymore, you have to be able to clear the ropes. Probably best thing that could have happened to England - they could have just qualified - got a lucky win against India and everybody would think it was all ok - which it isn't.
No disrespect to Bangladesh who certainly have made the most of their personnel and abilities but a serious look needs to be taken at the whole England set up when it comes to 1 day cricket.
There's kudos for the smaller countries in beating a so called "giant" but in my opinion we are so saturated in international 1 day cricket that most of the England team didn't really give a stuff about the World Cup. It's just another 1 day series on the merry go round.
Why take Tredwell at all if there is no intention to use him? I could go on but won't!
This disasterous tournament has not come as a surprise to me.
CE, if you were in charge who would you have played today?
They don't have to be on the tour - anyone.
I'll hold my hands up & say I haven't seen enough of the younger players to comment.
But there's plenty around. Play them & see how they get on.
Our best 2 Ali & Buttler were only given a chance, more recently than the others.
Problem is they are in a bit of a no win situation. Just today on commentary they were moaning that the team was always being changed around out in SL, yet in the run up to the WC and the first few matches they have resisted the urge to change the side as everyone kept moaning that you need a settled team.
Personally I'm not sure, winning obviously gives you confidence so there's the usual cliches about not changing a winning team but equally anyone coming into the side would want to play well to keep their place. Problem is you need to start winning. I think the lack of top T20 experience (IPL and/or Big Bash) is hurting us. You see the scores and the style of play in this WC is not too dissimilar to that of T20 nowadays. I think unless we change and try to accomodate our own players playing in these leagues or create a version of our own then these problems will unfortunately carry on.
I agree re IPL and Big Bash. In terms of team changes, yes there have been plenty, but it's too many of the old names, who are constantly in and out of the team like Bopara.
Give some youngsters a chance. Now is the time to do it.
I don't think there needed to be huge changes. Mainly a change in mentality - and coach. The bowling is a bit of a stab in the dark from me as I don't know as much as I should about the bowling in County Cricket.
But for this World Cup I would have gone for this...
Ali Hales Root KP Buttler Bopara Stokes Woakes Jordan/Finn Tredders Anderson
Plenty of flair in the batting, with Root the anchor at 3 in the case of losing an opener early on. Buttler higher up the order as well.
Most of the big sides, especially Australia and NZ, played intensive cricket in the months prior to the WC. The Kiwis have been playing like their lives depended on it. We turn up a week or two before the start, play a few half-hearted games, and guess what happens?
The thing I don't understand is this. It's clear that England need to change their mentality & approach in 1 day cricket & be more attacking. Paul Farbrace, the England assistant coach, was the coach of the Sri Lanka team that won the world Twenty20 in 2014. What is his role & what is he doing???
Lets face it. One dayers are more like T50 these days than the one day internationals of old. We have not got enough explosive players capable of clearing the ropes regularly. Needs sweeping change. Bring in the youngsters now. Tell them they have got two years to bed in. Play their their natural aggressive game. Don't worry if get out for couple of low scores. We want you to get used to being out there and building match changing/ match winning innings. Two years is s proper chance to develop. Not just giving them odd games and dropping once they have one bad performance. If they don't develop in that time still got two years before next World Cup. The players must also be available for county games. You cannot at yourself into form in the international arena.
Looking forward to going to the SCG this Friday for the big game!!! might decide who is the worst team in the tournament and quite frankly I fancy our chances to win that award.
For us to be competitive in ODI's then they need to set up a British version of the 'Big Bash/IPL', where only the best players are selected rather than across seventeen county sides. Players like Warner, Finch, Maxwell, Starc and Mitch Marsh have all come to the fore as a result of T20, and then progressed their games in the longer format. Probably the same for the Indians as well, though admittedly I don't have such a sound knowledge of their players. It is plain to see that we are playing a different game to the other nations, and it is the type of personnel and players that we are producing that is the problem, as well as some questionable tactics. Most embarassing WC for England, and that is saying something as we have had some shockers before this one!!
The problem is with England is that we are too conservative, in the one day game and in Test matches. Both forms have moved on and we have not moved on with them. With central contracts it has become very comfortable for the players. The hunger seems to have gone. Peter Moores was the safe but the wrong choice for the job. What we need is somebody who is going to grab us by the scruff of the neck like the Aussie coach has done.
Peter Moores said he was brought in to make a difference; seems to be a poor choice. When Gatting was skip, he had to manage characters like Botham etc and did it very successfully. Well thought of by his teammates. Perhaps he should have been considered.
