Deaths of horses at Cheltenham race course

  • In answer to the question regarding what would the 120 or so horses have been doing if they weren't racing at Cheltenham today is that most likely they wouldn't exist.
As I understand it horses are very selectively bred, and artificial insemination and what not goes on, maybe some variation of cloning happens as well in order to breed winning animals.
If the races didn't happen they probably wouldn't be bred.
  • Surely it is the destruction of an injured animal here that is inhumane (presumably because they are no longer worth anything to their owner). Just because you've broken your leg, why should you be put down?

Like many on here, you obviously haven't read my earlier post detailing the serious injury to a horse I part owned.
It has nothing to do with the value to an owner. Do you think it's an owner's decision ? Do you not think a vet makes these decisions.
Not one person on here in the objecting camp has a clue what they are talking about.
Neither do they have the decency to respond when their questions are answered or to read earlier posts.
Sorry, missed your earlier post, good to know that some get to retire.
  • So sorry, Mr Dugdale. Some of us are in the habit of eating supper. And my Secretary finished work at 5pm.

The answer, of course, is that the race horse - and any animal farmed for food, or kept in a laboratory - would not be in this world. Given the danger that they face and the abuse meted out to so many of them, that would probably be a blessing.
That the race horse is at Cheltenham at all is because that's where the money and the publicity is. The race-goers, like the jockeys, owners, trainers and visiting public, choose to be there. Choice is not something afforded to the race horse, any more than it is to the fattened farmed animal, or the unfortunate incarcerated creature being cut, poisoned and frightened in some underground bunker.
As you are aware, race horses are selectively bred to run and to make money. I do understand that most race horses are well cared for. (They're an asset, so hold a value). Transported about from race to race, the race horse is at the whim of its owner, trainer, stable hand or jockey.
Farmed Turkeys are bred to become large. Cows are bred to produce an unnaturally high yield of milk - (destined not for their babies, but for humans to take, thus denying the baby its sustenance).
That all the above, and more, exist at all is down to man's intervention, the main driver being the making of money. Thus the animal, with little or no choice in the matter, becomes subservient, a commodity, a unit, exploited.
Some call it bullying and we shall oppose it.

So do you oppose the ownership of pets of any kind?
  • Why? Are you looking to offload some?
On the basis that they don't make money, no, I don't. Unless it's a 'Look at me' show like Crufts, where selective breeding is a bedrock. Crufts has been forced by protests to tone down its more abusive elements. As has horse racing re. use of the whip, and reduction in the height of fences.
None of which would have happened voluntarily, of course. But we don't give up easily.
  • So im guessing you don't eat any meat or any diary products then Anna kissed and milk must be a complete no go because of denying the baby its sustenance?

How naive. Of course they make money.

I assume you're either someone who enjoys seeing animals killed for no reason or you have a gambling problem.
So everyone who has a bet has a gambling problem ? Everyone who has a bet is an idiot ?

I guess everyone who has a drink is an alcoholic ?
Everyone who goes to football is a hooligan ?
Everyone who continued to watch football after Heysel is a murderer ?
Logic isn't your forte is it.
  • Serious question. Where would the 119 horses due to run today and indeed the horses entered at the other meetings, be, if not in the care of racehorse trainers ?

Having a cultural day out at the ballet at Saddlers Wells?
    Told ya

Just to add, the vast majority of racehorses don't make money, but cost their owners huge amounts.

Yes, veggie since '85 and vegan since '98. Lots of us about these days.
  • I didn't like horse racing between '85 and '98 either.

    Still waiting.
  • If my cat and my hedgehog make money they can start paying me rent, little freeloaders.

Didn't say that they make money for their owners but then neither do most racehorses. You need to get them to start paying their way AUN.
  • Thanks @killerkish @smiffyboy @sam3110 @ValleyGary @CAFCsayer for proving that sometimes @PL54 isn't the only troll on here.
I'm sure you've made him a happy chappie tonight.

So everyone who likes horseracing on here is a troll ?
I'm sure you know what you're talking about, me, I've no idea.
Where did I say that ?
Everyone who likes horse racing on here is a troll ?
Nope. Can't find me saying that anywhere.

What I said was, that on a thread that is about the unfortunate deaths of some lovely animals some people are deliberately trying to wind up other people.
As afka said, I /we don't go onto threads about pro horse racing looking to wind people up.some people, sadly, get their kicks out of trying to upset others.
    Sad.

Says the man who wrote the original post. It's called irony.

    Sad.
Of course people with an opposing view will come on here. Why shouldn't they ?
In fact, is it they who are the wind up merchants. Would this thread not antagonise others ?
I'll write on any thread I wish to, as will others.
    Miserable.

    Very naive indeed.

Anna-kissed - I wanna know where that £600 quid went that was given to the "breeders" of the cat that my wife purchased.
  • When a horse is injured is it sent to Horsepital?

Haha but seriously though no, they put a tent up around it and club it to death like a seal.
  • edited March 2016
I heard they cut out its still beating heart and feed it to the winner of the race, who then gets to shag the dead horse's mum
  • Fair play to you anna kissed for backing your beliefs, many dont.Ive been around and own racehorses myself and had one severly injured so i know the care and attention these lovely animals recieve so i will back my beliefs.

I said maybe cloning. Anyway I tried to respond to one of the questions you asked because you said nobody was doing so.
  • When a horse is injured is it sent to Horsepital?

They shoot it in the face, half is sent to make chrispy pancakes and the other half is for making glue
  • Where's the outrage and campaigning for the poor snails that race and die?

    Horses have got it easy.
