The mindset of an England fan

Australia 361-1 - they're going to get 600,, and under scoreboard pressure we'll collapse

Australia 433-4 - the pitch is quickening up, perfect for Starc and Johnson, they've got the best of the batting conditions, we'll collapse

You can now add low bounce to my England fan pessimism checklist :-)

Great innings by Smith, even on this pancake of a pitch.

What was the point of that review?

The review nearly worked and arguably should have - he was hit outside off but about 3mm of the ball was in line with the stump

(Moeen had one on Nevill earlier that was much more out)

  • Thats not out. I don't care what the technology says, that should never ever be given out.

Root has the happy habit of picking up wickets, at the moment he has more wickets this series (4) than Jimmy Anderson (3) !

Part time spinners do tend to pick up the handy wickets, I remember Vaughan picking up one or two key wickets for England. Batsmen tend to lose their focus and let their guard down against them.
  • Aus 562-7 at Tea. I reckon they'll bat for another hour then declare. They'll want an hour at us tonight

Aus 562-7 at Tea. I reckon they'll bat for another hour then declare. They'll want an hour at us tonight

32 (30 if they declare or are bowled out) overs theoretically left today.

Will they want the ball relatively new for the morning in which case they might decide to only have 10 overs or so at us tonight or will they just carry on until they are bowled out or get 600 whichever comes first irrespective of when that happens?

566-8 declared 1 over after tea

    Johnson c Anderson b Broad 15

    Starc 12no

    Broad 4-83
    Root 2-55

Theory is Clarke may have declared whether Mitchell Johnson was out or not.
Giving our batsmen only 10 mins to prepare, instead of 20 mins.

400 minimum with the weather around Sunday will see us draw, come on England, lets show the Aussies that we can fight!

If we make 367, we should be ok. If we have to follow on, we could be in trouble.

Appreciate that they didn't want our openers (and Cook especially) having 20 minutes to prepare to bat but does really one over make that much of a difference? Effectively the openers have now had half an hour to prepare for the inevitable.

Clearly it does given Lyth's dismissal.
  • 0-1. I predict This will be all over by sunday afternoon

That was woeful from Lyth. He looked far from convincing against New Zealand. Will be amazed if he is still opening by the time we get to match 4 or 5.

Agreed, Lyth doesn't look, Test match class, to me.
  • Now would be a great time for Ballance to prove his doubters (including me) wrong
  • Yep, I thought so ... the pitch is a minefield :-)

Think he's under a bit of pressure - Ali could move up leaving a gap for say Rashid or Bairstow.
  • Hales should come in for Lyth. I think Hales should've been opening the batting for England in all forms for the past 12-18 months anyway. Has the potential to be 1 of the best openers in the world in my opinion
