It wasn't just the old voting for Trump. A lot of young people did too, because the internet acted as a mobilising post for a lot of alienated, cultureless, profoundly bored alt-right types

I have skipped seventy odd pages of this, but the world has shifted a lot. The power of the internet, the placing of traditional evidence based 'truth' below individual desire, the craving for the instant, the disconnect between the old establishment and the new forces of reaction from the right and the left, the X-factor desire for stuff merely because you want it and you're worth it, the change in the world of work, the globalisation of nearly everything has led to a world almost unrecognisable to the post war world in which I grew up. For me the contemplation of democracy and individual sentience is worth considering. If we accept everybody has a vote, then one would hope those voting would pause to consider the seriousness of what they do because of the impact it has. As with everything the answer lies somewhere within education, which needs to be explored whilst we still have an education system that isn't purely utilitarian.

it's alarming how in vogue contrarianism is these days
Events of the past 5 months have confirmed what I have long thought, and that is that many people in Politics and the Media, and almost every person with left wing sympathies are totally out of touch with with the feelings of the common working class person.
America just like Britain have voted with their heart. Clearly the policies of Nigel Farage and Donald Trump appealed to an awful lot of working class people who all feel badly let down by the mainstream politicians.
Charlton Life is dominated by these same people that think they know best and dismiss anyone who dares to question their opinions. I predicted before Brexit that Essex man would vote on mass to Leave and was proved right. I also said on this site last week that if I was American I would have voted Trump.
For both comments and I was ridiculed by some of left wing "luvvies" on this site who once again have been proved wrong.
I will make a third prediction and that is that over the next couple of years the working class people of Germany, France, Holland will all want to follow Britain and get out of the EU.
This is just the start!

The idea that Trump's election represents a revolution and triumph for the working class is utterly bonkers. Yes, he has successfully tapped into their anger and disenfranchisement but this is a man who is not remotely interested in anyone but himself, almost a textbook definition of a sociopath.
His victory should obviously be seen as a rejection of the establishment but the idea that this is a triumph for the working class is insane.

You work in an industry that's booming, you've never been richer. Yet you want revolution. Makes sense.
I'll have my moments. But it won't be when people on message board declare this as revenge on the American Marxists and Socialists. My response to that is like when a panda hears there's another panda "what, there's more of us?!!?!"
I worry about healthcare. I worry that we're going to see a rise in hate crimes. I worry about (but am not surprised about) the influence of Breitbart and the like, and Steve Bannon, on this country. I worry about who he will (try, at least) to put on the Supreme Court. But I also don't know how a Trump presidency governs. If it governs. But he will get to Washington and find out what ever other outsider has: you can't change the system just by being President. He's our fourth "outsider" President in a row and the terms of 2 out of the last 3 have ended in "mandates against them."
I'm probably more worried about Congress where, despite the need for change, we are going to see most incumbents returning.

Agreed. I genuinely don't know what happens to people who voted for him when it turns out that you can't bring manufacturing jobs from China back. Or create new ones because that's just not how the world works in 2016. I also suspect we're going to learn the lessons that Britain will be learning which is how our economy, our own jobs, our own retirement funds, are tied to financial markets which are incredibly volatile right now.
