My wife (American with Latin family) is completely freaking out but I feel that Trump won't so much do anything awful (mass deportations, etc) as just be an enabler of casual racism which could make their lives difficult.
For me, one of the saddest things he promotes is a complete lack of empathy towards others, ie seeing all Syrian refugees as potential terrorists and all Mexicans as drug dealers and rapists. Complete lack of emotional intelligence.
Having his finger on the nuclear button at 3am the same way he is on Twitter is a scary thought.
It is clear that Trump's America First message was very sucessful but the idea that he will fight for the working class is risible.
At 70 years old though, I can't see him doing two terms. What he does in the next four years though, and how the Democrats and moderate Republicans respond, will make for very 'interesting times'...2 -

I would argue that yes, a lot of the views in papers etc are quite right wing, especially in papers like The Mail, but then a lot of people will not state their views publicly, e.g. in a conversation on a forum like this, because of fear of being accused of all sorts of things. Put it this way, there are two extremes to immigration
1) Can't we just let everyone in? It's everyone's World after all?
2) Keep them all out, shut the borders and don't let anyone in.
One of those is a lot more of a controversial thing to say in public than the other, and then it is a sliding scale towards the centre from there. A lot of people are scared to state their opinions, and admit that they would vote Brexit, or admit they would vote Trump, because what they say will end up with them getting abuse.
Regardless of whether or not you agree with their views, democracy states they have a right to have them represented, and if the mainstream won't represent them, you get people like Trump and Farage coming in from the fringes.6 -

I think part of the problem is that a large number of the people who are not scared to express their opinions are bigots and xenophobes - like Trump and Farage. They feign outrage get the vapours when it's pointed out what they are, but it's clear for all to see in many cases. The "gentle right" are lumped in with them by default, because they don't condemn such extremism. Or if they do condemn it, they in turn are labelled by those extremists as mad lefties! Your brand of PC, Identity politics has caused terrible devision, animosity, and left huge numbers of people afraid to even open their mouths for fear of being labelled "racist, xenophobic, homophobic" etc, simply because they want secure borders, safety for their families, jobs, or even because they simply believe in the traditional definition of marriage.
Well, the silent majority has now spoken. First with Brexit, now Trump, and next watch for France and Germany to go exactly the same way.

Certainly not representative of the majority are they ( Trump is winning the popular vote as well BTW). 65 pages here of overwhelmingly anti Trump sentiment, and yet the majority of Americans voted for him, very strange!
