Rarely has an England batsman been quite so out of form playing for both his country and county as Compton - 131 runs this summer in 10 innings this summer in all forms of cricket at an average of 16.38. When one thinks that, in 2012 and prior to making his Test debut he had made over 1,000 runs in first class cricket alone by 1st June, it shows quite how much batting is in the mind.
Just hope The Snail isn't recalled - but with just one 50 in his last 15 innings hopefully the chances of that happening are limited too.
I can see Bairstow pushing his way into the ODI and T20 teams at this rate. England have fantastic batting riches atm. I watched a batter for Worcester the other night who impressed me immensely - Joe Clarke - keep an eye out for him.
Of course, the forgotten man in all this is Ian Bell - still only 34. Imagine a team of Cook,Hales,Bell,Root,Bairstow,Buttler,Stokes,Ali,Broad,Wood,Jimmy....AND......all 'English' Wow what a team that would be.

There is no place for Bell in the future of the England team. You play your best batsman at 3, Root. Keep Vince for now, Bairstow can move up to 5 and Butler can play as No.6. I was there today and I have a very red face.
Agree with the above on Bairstow focussing on his batting at number five now, and then giving Butler another chance at eight, behind Ali at seven.
I have never been convinced by Compton, and watching him yesterday confirmed my suspicions.
Watching his brief stay at the crease was tortuous, you can't have two plodders like him and Cook together, as the innings goes into a complete freeze.
All of the best batters should want to bat at three, so that is where Root should be told to bat - he is the best player, so let him set the pace from number three.
Keep faith with Vince at four, Bairstow at five, Stokes at six, Ali at seven, Buttler at eight, Broad at Nine etc.
Also Hales needs to find the right balance between playing his natural game and playing it like a test match, you don't mind him being more circumspect but equally he is in the side to put some pressure on the bowlers.
I think what done for him, was that rather painful last innings against NZ in 2013, when he fidgeted around like a man at a bus stop, unable to decide between seizing the day with adventure, or battling it out like an old pro - in the end he did neither and scored something like 8 from 85 balls, and was dumped for the Ashes.
With this England team, if we accept the fact that Cook is the slow innings builder, then everyone else needs to play around him, and not join him in keeping the scoring rate down.
That is why it is also important that Hales (who has shown flashes of ability), needs to be a bit more aggressive at the top of the order, and get the scoring rate up a bit more.

If he's scoring runs freely then why shouldnt he be back in the side? - its not as if we have a plethora of no 3's is it? Also, Root has been magnificent at 4 - absolute madness to move him up the order - your best batter should always go in at 4.

Not sure that I agree with that at all.
Ponting for Australia, was their best player and played the vast majority of his cricket at number three.
Similarly for India, Dravid batted at three for a number of years.
I have heard Michael Vaughan talk about before, how the best players want to bat at three as it gives them the chance to set the tempo for the rest of the innings, as well of course of facing the maximum amount of deliveries.

Great player, but not as good as Tendulkar who would go in behind him. Dravid was the more defensive player of the 2, which is maybe why they preferred him at 3.
It's debatable whether Root should be 3 or 4. He's not actually made that many runs this series, so it might be a risk moving him up the order?
Stinking hot day there yesterday and some grown up beer on tap that tasted rank to a shit pissy fosters drinker like me Bottles of fosters were available but didn't bother with them they were too small for the alcoholic drinkers in my group I went on the Pimms (lightweight) You have to put £20 deposit on the jug and at one point , just before mate got to front of queue he said the girls behind the bar were giving out free refills they didn't realise it had to be bought each time. , a manager eventually clocked what was going on before we got ours booooooo
