Head of Scouting & Recruitment Steve Head recently helped the full England team with their World Cup scouting.
Steve was asked by Roy Hodgson, Ray Lewington and Head of Analysis Andy Scoulding – colleagues from their time together at Fulham – to watch international games on their behalf, an offer he accepted with the backing of Reading FC.
Steve said, “It was a pleasure and honour to work for England.
“I worked for Roy at Fulham as Head of Opposition Scouting for two and a half years, in that time we went to the Europa League final so he knew what I could produce. And like everyone I was delighted he got such a positive result by winning England’s group.
“I’m exceptionally grateful to Nick Hammond and the Manager for agreeing to it, it worked in the Club’s favour as well in terms of watching players.”

Can't see him staying, looks over-qualified for League 1. Expect him to leave before the start of the season when he gets to know the incumbents better.

I wonder who and where they are looking for the new manager role now. I appreciate that a lot of players/managers will be on their holidays now, but it has all gone quiet. Given the mess we're in they don't have the luxury of time

The first issue is, does he bring a network with him, or is he going to tap into an existing network. The worst case scenario is starting from scratch and having to develop a new network. He will need at least two opposition scouts to cover all future opponents.
What database of information/knowledge does he bring with him? The first job will be to go through the non-retained lists and match it up with players he's been following. Ideally he should have 3or4 players on his list for each position.
His biggest problem will be identifying players to suit the managers game plan or style of play. We have no manager at the moment, so how is he going to do that?
As we all know, the policy of the last two seasons has been to recruit a bunch of players and tell the coach to make a team out of them, which is unworkable and one of the reasons we have been relegated. Has that policy changed?
How does he fit in with the laptop scouts in Belgium, who have consistently sent over players not suited to British football? Are we recruiting a core of British players, above the standard of League One? because that is the only way out of this Division.

By the way, Malcolm Fidgeon was the Man Utd scout for Southern England. He was responsible for Giggs & Beckham going to Old Trafford. Malcolm was an ex-Amatuer player, who was a headmaster at a secondary school in Harlow when I knew him. You don't have to be well known to do the job. (He spotted Ryan Wilson on a visit to Manchester, which co-incided with a Salford Boys game. Beckham was always going to United, but needed looking after while playing schoolboy football in Walthamstow. Malcolm persuaded Spurs to allow him to train there during term time).
At the moment it's just a name in a role, proof will be in the outcome. We had an experienced Uk Head Scout with a strong network of contacts, and he left because he wasn't being listened to and the Club's lead on these things was decided in Belgium.
We've now replaced him five months later, with someone of a similar background and experience to the one who left.
Let's see what influence he gets allowed, and what impact that has
