I remember a previous Charlton game against Vincenza, under Curbs Charlton winning 3-1. It was a lively match, and Charlton looked incredibly, sharp, well drilled and ready for a season in the premiership. Vincenza had also been promoted to the Italian Serie A. Charlton were ahead in the pre season preparation and were much fitter than the Italians, who put in some bad tackles. Good crowd for the friendly. Charlton went on to have an excellent season in the premeirship.
Scroll forward, 1,600 allegedly today, 2 stands closed and a team clearly not ready for the start of the season. Meire is so clueless, she does not know, how badly the club is failing under her & Duchatelet. What a state of affairs
Rufus started that all off by elbowing one of the Italians in the face after 60 seconds. Best pre season game ever.

Legend had it that it started in the tunnel with a lot going on before they even got to the pitch. I was in the East stand, about four rows back, and very early Rufus hit one of theirs with a slide tackle that would have sunk a battleship. When Chris Powell ran 30 yards to strangle someone you somehow knew there was a subplot...
I think Vincenza was a Serie A B team - inter milan (?). There was talk about a link up between Charlton and Inter Milan. Unfortunately, no one tried to spell it out to the players how they may benefit, and it ended up like a fight between 2 brothers trying to be the top dog. Great lively friendly game.
Sorry I haven't time to read the whole thread but does that crowd of 1,626 (1,409 excluding the away fans) does that include season ticket holders. I can't believe that we would have over 1,400 paying to be there to watch a squad that is still about twelve players of a first eleven!
If it was a protest squad, and the first half certainly read like it was, then I have lost a tremendous amount of respect for Slade. The squad is nowhere near deep enough, of that there is no doubt. But this is the final warm-up game before the season starts. He started with a desperately conservative team and formation, five defenders with Foley and Crofts in front of them when we've had a torrid time breaking teams down. Furthermore, he didn't start with Harriott or Holmes. Our only consistent form of attack seems to be counter attacking with pace. By dropping both, he seems to have all but negated that.
He could have started today with: Phillips, Solly, Konsa, Johnson, THD, JJ, Crofts, Harriott, Lookman, Holmes, Ajose.
It's not perfect, but it's a pretty decent first 11 for League One. Our season starts in one week and he threw away his last chance to play a potential starting 11 for the opening match. On top of that, we made seven (I believe) substitutions, which basically deprived the players of a full run out before the season starts.
I'm starting to see why Cardiff wanted to move Slade to a more Director of Football role. Who in our team sounds like they've come in in pre-season and improved? There's a lot of talk of Slade's "Man Management," but what is he doing to coach the players, and the team?
Our transfer dealings, and lack thereof, have been farcical. But two wrongs don't make a right, and I think Slade was wrong to throw away a match one week before the start of the season.
Penalties good, game useful, needs more players, goalkeeper massive priority, spinning plates that may get over the line in the next 48 hours. Transfer window closes August 31. Team in transition, work ethic good. Value basics (like the cheap supermarket range). Nothing on Teixiera but didn't sound sure on that. Next week normal game preparing for a league game. Wants to get off to a solid start (hoping for a 0-0 / 1-1 against Bury then). A pretty neutral / tying not to be controversial interview.
Smacks of the typical "we tried but couldn't get any over the line" crap we usual get from this lot! Even from the beginning I didn't really believe what he was saying - Slade really likes the use of penalty shootout to give his team experience in penalties ... Erm so great idea to let the centre back loudmouth twat it at the goalkeeper as well as letting the majority of the kids in the pitch take a penalty!
Spinning plates analogy to show players are coming in - he's hoping to sign one or two in the next 48 hours ... The same thing he said after Tuesday AND last Saturday!
Then he got caught out when asked about Jorge Tex , and just about got 'he's injured' out in time!
He was clearly just looking at a few players, could argue the earlier games should have been for that but we are where we are.
Johnson played OK, he missed a few chances from corners, he's big and strong enough that he gets his head on the ball from set pieces but can't seem to put them away. I didn't like the way he was talking to the two young centre halves, he wasn't supportive more critical.
Holmes was very lively when he came on, he'll be key this year, the forwards looked lost, Ba was pretty awful, he's just not up to it or probably more likely he's just not up 'for' it. Ajose needs someone alongside him, he's not a lone striker thats for sure.
Didn't rate Foley, he was like a very third rate Holland.
I reckon we can field a fairly effective 1st 11, however if any of them are out we have almost Zero in reserve. Assuming no more player sales I can see the team being:
Goalkeeper, hopefully a signing if not Phillips.
Solly, Tex, Johnson (Bauer when back), Fox,
Holmes, Croft, Jackson, Harriet/Lookman
Ajose & Lookman, substitute Lookman to midfield/behind the front 2 if Novak fit
That team should be competitive against most of league 1, but we are short of cover in almost all positions i'd say.
Bit the bullet and took me boy to his first game today as I'm usually busy most Saturdays and literally had nothing else today (not that would cost £11 anyway) He loved it but prob not as much as my Eldest seeing a Mendonca Hat Trick in front of 20'000 on his first game. Sat in my old seat from the Play off winning season (and the next four seasons after it before moving elsewhere in the ground) was pretty emotional looking at the empty seats and remembering some of the exciting, loud, packed games during that period of 6/8 years. First half was as a bad a performance I can remember from a Charlton side and Ive witnessed a lot of shit I assure you over 38 years (first game at 3).
Phillips, Crofts, Foley, Johnson, no FL players (yet in some cases) imho.
There was no enthusiasm, ideas, or urgency.
I still cant get it out my head they are running the club into the ground for ulterior motives.
Something will really drastically have to change very soon or that is a relegation squad, again.

She couldn't believe it either as her last game was against Palace in the Championship
Teixera is gone based on that interview. Slade was properly caught on the hop by that question. Assume another centre back is one of the signings that is "close" and they'll announce it once they have a replacement.
Clubs having decisions to make points to loan deals. Assume he is talking about Norwich and Rudd.
Personally don't think 5 in is enough, especially if Texeira goes as well.
Said it over and over, but we are short right back cover, if Teixera goes short of x2 centre backs, desperately in need of a bit of pace and flair in central midfield, short of cover on the right wing and assuming Lookman stays short of a striker.
At the minute, if we get an injury almost anywhere we have a problem. Suspect Foley will come in, but I wouldn't bother. Far too similar to what we already have.

Better find reserve then, because at least one of those starting midfield won't be here by the end of next week
Hope it's not true but it sounds like KM is taking the piss out of him here ...yes, of course we are trying so hard to get the players in that you have mentioned but you know how tough it is ...whilst sitting back doing fuck all because RD has told her there is no more money.

She does not care.
On the way out she was laughing and joking with two other women in the directors box, not a care in the world.

Louis Mendez interviewing Slade post match.
'Who?'
'Texeira'
'No, no reason. Oh he has a slight injury nothing more than that.'
Think Slade needs to attend the Meire School of Lie Telling.

As for Teixera , I don't even think he knew who Louis was talking about. Very strange.
