fifa now open investigation into ireland for wearing a easter rising commemorative shirt - the amount of work into it will probably outweigh the fine - but that is fifa for you.
They got permission from UFEA.
maybe but still in the news;
Fifa has opened disciplinary proceedings over the Republic of Ireland's use of a logo to commemorate the centenary of the Easter Rising.
The Republic's players had the years 1916-2016 on their shirts during a friendly against Switzerland in March.
The thing about the poppy which makes it different, is that's not celebrating a military victory, a crushing success on the battle field, the fight for independence etc
It's commemorating the ordinary soldiers who died in combat, whether we won or lost the wars, whether we agree with the war or not. It's a humanitarian symbol, not a political one
I do feel uncomfortable with the compulsory nature of it now. If someone said that we all had to commemorate cancer victims in April, and that every politician, TV presenter etc would have to wear a cancer ribbon that month, if they didn't want to kick up a massive media storm, would we think that right?
Yeah but its clear now that FIFA dont care about lives... they solely to care about how much money can be made from anything and everything!!

That'll be so they can quickly set a precedent for punishing the offence, then come down hard on England/Scotland.
I've thought some more about this and decided that it isn't really about whether we should have poppies, whether we should print them on shirts, political aspects to it, etc etc.
The real over-riding factor is that anything that FIFA tell us to do we should do the opposite because they are a bunch of corrupt w*****s who need to be told where to go.
So therefore we should cover the shirts with printed poppies, a huge giant poppy should be placed over the Wembley arches, the corner flags should become 'corner poppies', the linesmen should wave poppies instead of flags. anyone whose name is Poppy should be allowed free entry, and every goal should be greeted with a shower of poppies.
If FIFA fine us then just don't pay the fine. If they tell us we out the World Cup, so be it. I've had it with FIFA.

Dig up the pitch and plant Papaver Somniferum. That'll piss them off.
Just think – Argentina pitch up at Wember-lee with a logo commemorating the fallen in the Falklands War. What would all the moral-grandstanders from south-east London say about that?
stupid point. the poppy represents the fallen in all conflicts. It isn't point scoring.
If Argentina have a similar commemorative icon for the same reasons then I would have absolutely no issues with that. I doubt that any right thinking person would.
Surely this is a lie from FIFA because if they've simply reminded the Home Nations about Law.4 then the FAs can just turn around and say: Thanks for that, we're wearing the Poppy because you've clearly not said no

It's very strange indeed. The extract from the BBC story says:
it "reminded them about law four" - which states players are not allowed to wear "political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images".
The sport's governing says it "reiterated" to the FAs that "only the independent disciplinary committee can decide" if the rules have been broken and what sanction should apply.
Now, that's very reminiscent of letters I used to send out which stated something along the lines of "....unable to provide an interpretation of the Act, only the courts can do that....". However that was always followed up with "however it is the opinion of ...that..."
In other words, for this matter, it is indeed down to the committee to decide. BUT FIFA should have given guidance as to what the law (sic) means. It is their rule after all.
Which brings up another issue. It's not a LAW of course because it's not something that comes from a government. It's merely a rule of a members' club. FIFA (and indeed The FA) should not be so very pompous. They are not law-making bodies.
Interesting read and a lot of good points raised. It would probably have raised less hackles had someone other than the mess that is FIFA made the point. Once you take them out of the equation, the poppies on shirts becomes an obligation to the wearer that it was never meant to be. Wear the poppy with pride and remember the bravery of those who gave everything, but don't try and force everyone else to do so .
Just turned on the welsh game v Serbia and noticed they're not wearing the poppy just a black armband.
I believe the Welsh FA made the decision they couldn't risk a fine. They are not the wealthiest association. Didn't they once operate with a part-time manager to keep costs down? Shame though that their senior players didn't offer to club together to pay any fine. What would the fine have been? About 120 minutes worth of Bale's Real Madrid wages?
I think it was a possible points deduction that scared Wales. Even if England lose 3 points we'll still probably qualifier, and Scotland aren't getting close to qualification, but for Wales those 3 points could be all important.
Why on earth does anyone care about qualifying for FIFA's world championship in Russia? Surely it is time to pull out of this competition altogether if we really believe FIFA is corrupt.

I agree with this but a wasted exercise if others don't join us. Still think we should do it and provide a message that we cannot, as a country, support FIFA in its current format.
I always thought it was about mourning, not celebrating. Not about freedom. Not about victory or defeat but an acknowledgement of the overwhelming shock and loss of the destruction of a whole generation and a determination that the one good thing to come out of it was that we would never allow cant and pride to lead us to slaughter our young again.
So I don't understand what the Fuck FIFA have to do with it.
Fifa taking the moral high ground hahaha. You couldn't make it up. Pay any fine, refuse to apologise and tell them we will wear the poppy whenever we feel that it's appropriate
You have to laugh dont you... Wales chose not to wear the poppy on their armbands because they didnt want to have FIFA breathing down their necks and so receive any disciplinary action and instead just have the fans create an image of a poppy.
FIFA are going to find it very hard to punish Wales when they let that Argentina sign go unpunished. Rightly or wrongly that formed precedent and the arbitration court would surely overrule any FIFA pettiness.

Or football.
One of the most corrupt organisations of modern times ought to be a bit more sensible with things like this.
