I don't think people celebrating the result are celebrating for Labour necessarily, they're celebrating for the country.
I dread to think how much worse things would've got with five more Tory years - no Brexit deal, dementia tax for the old, housing crisis for the young, continual public spending cuts... The vote yesterday stopped the nasty party dead in their tracks.
We've got five more years of the Tories. They won, they are forming the new government.
They might be reined in slightly by the DUP and their small majority means so won't be able to push any old policy through but they won.
The tory manifesto was deliberately vague and covered so much ground ie fox hunting so the May would have a free hand for five years to do what she wanted. It didn't quite work and she won't be able to push fox hunting (as a example) through because only a few backbenchers can rebel but don't be in any doubt. The tories won.
I'm grateful that some people understand what's going on here
Fantastic day. And watching the tories and their supporters squirm and wriggle is just brilliant. It's going to be like shooting fish in a barrel for Labour in the next few months. Strong and stable!
Imagine if the Conservatives had managed to beat Labour.
I believe in a decent days work for a fair wage. To pay my dues and taxes. I believe in saving up for most things (except getting a mortgage). I reckon in that respect I have plenty in common with Conservatives, and they with me.
What excites many of us is that the genie is our of the bottle and it won't be put back. To those of you that think this is just another election, to many of us it isn't. It is a glorius chapter in the story of a better world. Hopefully some of you will join us, I joined only recently. I am still feeling elated and the cause is hope. Thank you Jeremy Corbyn.
The British public don't deserve Theresa May. I'm sure even Conservative voters, party members and even many Tory MPs must think that. Do the UK want her going into EU negotiations after showing what spectacularly poor judgement she has?
She should resign IMO. No need to call an election & when she did she couldn't be bothered to attend the Leaders Debate to explain her policies. I waiting for a Tory MP to grow some & tell it like it is........ but it seems they've all gone to ground. It won't take much for just a couple of backbenchers to get the arsehole & decide to abstain on a vote in the Commons or for a bye election or two to reduce her working majority to zero (did the tory guy in Thanet get back in ? he could go down if the CPS get their way)
Problem is I don't know who could take over. Boris can come across as a bit of a wally (but supposedly knows his stuff) . I like Rees-Mog or James Goldsmith but I know they wont go down to well with the lower classes.

Well said. But, don't forget she doesn't actually have a majority at all.
And James Goldsmith's medical record rules him out
Bar the odd stupid post, there's been some fascinating, insightful reading on this thread over the past 24 hours. Haven't looked at this thread for months so no idea what nonsense has gone on, but I dread to think of the hours added up I've looked at this thread today and taken on board views from all political spectrums. Hope others feel the same too.
So thanks all that have contributed in the debate in such a mature and accepting way.
Er - well the weathers fecking amazing in so cal. And I can live on the beach...... And....
Trump. Fuck.
So back to Blighty with a nice secure home in leafy Surrey........ and 9 months of May limping on until Jezza tries take 2 of turning us into a socialist nation with Diane Abbott back in the fold cos everyone will have forgotten what a liability she is by Autumn. Although with a Tory / DUP majority seemingly secure tax hikes will take a back seat for the time being. Unfortunately so will everything else that matters when running a country.
Democracy is great - but we voted for the Brexit mess and we are now voting in a massive division leaving ourselves with massive insecurity
New Zealand?!
Wherabouts in SoCal mate? I mean California is becoming a Socialist Utopia. There's even talk of a "Calexit" so...I mean the weather is fucking lovely. And the food. And the culture. And all the political turmoil you could get back home, and then some!
Office would be in Irvine - and we would look to live in Orange County. Would like the beach (Laguna or Newport) but more realistically inland - somewhere like Mission Viejo.

You mean the fact that he is dead? He could still be a better candidate than May.
Just been discussing with my son the somewhat eccentric candidates - Lord Bucket Head and Mr Fish Finger to name but two.
I have decided that at the next election (probably quite soon) I will be standing in Stoke on an independent ticket. The purpose will be to gain sponsors for x per vote gained to raise money as part of my fundraising for Leukemia research and the Anthony Nolan Trust. I'll be sure to let you all know but just wanted to check something in case it's not allowed. It will not be an offensive name and likewise the manifesto will be humorous rather than derogatory so would appear to be acceptable. Anyone see any reason why it wouldn't be allowed?
I still can't get away from the fact that the Tories are in this utter mess, ran an awful campaign.
And still won.
If they sort themselves out when we go again it isn't gonna be plain sailing for Comrade Corbyn if he couldn't beat Mays car crash
The young vote for Labour is important for the future though - it is clear that the Tories have become completely toxic for the under 30s. If Labour keep going with the same positive (or idealistic?) message utilising social media then when more young people become franchised and the older Tory voters pass away/count for less of the demographic, the next election in a few years could see a Labour landslide. A lot depends on if they continue with the Corbyn momentum or shift to the centre again.
Waiting a few years for the next election rather than having another messy one in a few months would greatly benefit Labour.
More this comes under scrutiny, the more this enforced collusion with the DUP is going to become a major problem for the Conservatives. General understanding of the DUP was painfully thin in England until this morning.
Can see this quickly unraveling into further farce.

Sorry. I might have this wrong and apologies if so, but are you saying this election has been "plain sailing" for Labour? Given the starting point in the polls, the lack of support from within his own party and the disgusting way he has been personally attacked in most of the media and by his opponents, I'd say he has done remarkably well. Far, far better than I'd ever expected two months ago for certain.

Will freely admit I'm neither educated nor particularly intelligent, so looking to take on board the views of others.
Where it comes to socialism, and the strapline 'for the many not the few' (which I think people massively bought into), isn't the fact that unemployment is at the lowest levels since 1975 not the best possible aspect of providing a platform and opportunities for all?
The Labour party needs to get some centrist players into the fold.
Agree.
How labour move forward from this is massive. No infighting and the centrist power players uniting under corbyn could see real force.
Unfortunately, the centrists turned their backs on corbyn during the repeated lynchings and I think this will not go unpunished.
But Corbyn is far left and that is what rising numbers of people are apparently voting for, so why should they change?
The numbers don't tell the whole story though.
The government fudges numbers by not counting certain people as unemployed.
A lot of these new jobs created are on subsistence wages that need to be topped up by in work benefits.
Wages are not keeping up with the cost of essentials such as rent, fuel, food etc.
If employers could pay everyone 5 pounds a day and people were forced into such jobs by government sanctions then unemployment would be wiped out but obviously that is not the way to live.
It is also of note that employment rates are higher where cost of living is higher and pockets of unemployment exist in areas with no jobs and no wealth creation, causing a poverty cycle .
So I'm eight hours behind (literally and figuratively) and just catching up.
I think this is a very important lesson. And I'd contrast it to @seth plum 's missus' sentiment about university fees turning out the youth vote. If we're treating 18-25 as the yoot, then half of them will be outside of the typical university age anyway. Perhaps debt forgiveness yes, but it's not just that simple.
As someone who graduated university in 2008, I can say that it feels like my generation (who I'd include in the 18-25 year olds) got a very bad deal. We've seen high unemployment numbers but more importantly, stagnant wages, as is outlined above. I have a lot of friends in Britain with good degrees who struggled for years to find anything beyond temp work. And with years of experience being important in most fields, that puts you back for a long time.
IF, and this is a big if, this is the beginning of a move toward more leftist politics (a lot of ifs here), it will be driven by a group of young people who believe that the economy is currently unfair, and that they have had to pay the price for the mistakes of others.
Isn't that because we have too many graduates?
The numbers going to university have steadily increased, without any evidence that the economy needs these extra graduates. It might need specific graduates (e.g. in languages, maths and science) but not vast numbers of people with Sociology or History degrees.
I don't know that I believe that necessarily, but that's a bit hard for me to gauge. But the large majority of my friends who had a hard time getting work had maths degrees. Now of course huge disclaimer this is purely anecdotal.
And as someone with a liberal arts degree, I can tell you that it can be incredibly valuable though often derided.

It's a nice part of the world. Yeah don't live in Irvine, Irvine is very meh. It can obviously be expensive but from what I remember you can find little pockets that are "affordable." Give us a shout if you end up doing it or have any questions.

But in all seriousness, Blair held on for years when Brown wanted him gone and so has Corbyn, so who knows what will happen.
Sometimes you don't always get what you want

"I voted Tory for the first time in my life and I've ended up getting The Ulster Unionists.
That'll teach me."

There are far too many fantasists about. (sorry fantasists no offence intended).
