May has delayed the Queen's Speech which was due on 19th June.

The BBC say they've been told that this is the reason:

    Queen's Speech delayed by... goat-skin?
    Posted at 13:38

We understand one of the reasons given for the Queen's Speech being delayed is that it has to be written on goat-skin - and that takes a week to process, because it has to be hung up to dry.

The new Queen's Speech will have to be agreed with the DUP - hence the delay. The goatskin complication was explained by Nick Robinson here, writing back in 2013.
Are we sure that shouldn't have been "hung out to dry"??

Any truth in the rumour that even Billy-goats wouldn't be seen dead wearing this speech??
Is Billy an oblique reference to King Billy and therefore the DUP (protestants) or am I letting my imagination run away from me?
I didn't think I was being that subtle @Cordoban Addick but, yes, it was trying to make light of something that is very serious, especially for my family in Belfast.
Less subtle, more weird (unique). I appreciated it but wondered if I was going a bit mad and seeing jokes where there were none.
  • She'll be gone by the end of the month I think
  • Well that's her own fault for damaging so many of them with her friend!
  • Gerry Adams is on BBC News, TV is on mute but it looks like he's had his teeth whitened. Don't really want to be seeing too much of him...

yes, lets go back to the 80's when they showed a blanked out picture & what was said was spoken by someone else.

Shows up the huge anomalies in the current system with the Greens & UKIP (apologies for lumping them together) polling just under 1.12m votes and getting just 1 green seat.

SNP needing 40x less votes for every seat they picked up!

Surely this system has to change.

Dont go posting figures like that....... Labour will tell you they were only 2,000 short of winning - although they also said they'd won so I'm a bit confused....

Does show how crazy our system is like I put on here about SNP & UKIP in 2015 3x the number of votes, 1 seat v 50+

I wonder how the boundaries would have to look to roughly have the same number of voters in each.

Interesting is an interesting word for it. I'd have gone with something far more controversial.

My god, didn't the Telegraph used to be considered a serious broadsheet? Not doubting the figures but the analysis and explanation were hardly complex.

The world has dumbed down @Cordoban Addick Only surprised they didn't manage to squeeze it all into 140 characters! Or Instagram it!!

The next Tory manifesto will be on Snapchat, so Theresa (or whoever's next) hasn't got to worry about silly U-turns...all policies will just self-destruct (a bit like Theresa too I suppose).

Much better (and much earlier) piece here, from the always-excellent Diamond Geezer blog
  • Anyway. What can we expect from the Queen's Speech?

I can't believe that Davis is that thick skinned that he thinks he can just roll on with Plan A (didn't work for George either). I suspect mentions of austerity will be ditched and the emphasis will be on getting the best Brexit we can, as well as security.

I just can't see them wanting to piss off their core support any more than they already have done.

As for Brexit. I think the only version they CAN go for is a so called "hard" option. If there is no give on free movement, as well as Human Rights, tough stance on exit bill...then EU will surely see those as their "lines in the sand" too.

Just no way that this will all be done in 2 years. That was impossible before the election. More so now.

  • That is what Ruth Davidson has suggested. She is the only Tory I fear in all honesty. Boris' tweets from the 1922 group meeting tells you how stupid they think the public are! It woud make perfect sense for there to be a cross party team and this will give us more strength in the negotiations.

Why would you fear Ruth Davidson?

If she is a good politician ... and there are precious few of them around... what do you fear?!?

    Amazing comment.

I fear that she could lead a lot of poor politicians into the continued position of depriving people of social justice. Not sure what is so amazing about that!

If she is a good politician, which she is, why would she do that?

I am no fan of the Tories but you are blanking your mind to everything blue even when there may be a positive.

It's not the woman that is to be feared. It's her policies.

He said he feared her NOT her policies.

It was a respectful comment about her, and the fear was based on her policies or at least the effect of them.
  • We have a system of “neo-feudalism” in which all of us and our national governments are enslaved to debt. This system is governed by the central banks and by the Bank for International Settlements, and it systematically transfers the wealth of the world out of our hands and into the hands of the global elite. There are good Conservatives but those that work for the establishment work for this corruption.

But most people have no idea that any of this is happening because the global elite also control what we see, hear and think about or at least try to. Today, there are just six giant corporations that control more than 90 percent of the media,

    But I didn't.

  • Now that the youth see the effect they have had it will grow further. The conservative party has got a very narrow type of young person it can appeal to - it isn't a vote they want to see increase.

I think they key is getting the youth to vote. It becomes a habit. I've met very few people who started and then stopped. I've met far more who never started.

I meant I don't what him to be relevant to UK politics.
  • All this debt we owe, America owes $440 bn - who do we owe it to?
  • It is quite an important question though - who do we and other countries owe all this money too? The money we have to close hospitals etc... to find.
