  • Couch to 5k has gone a bit wrong. I’m in week 4, and each run involves two three minute runs, and two five minute runs. Sadly my hips don’t seem to be all that happy about it, and I’ve almost ground to a halt.
I reverted to week 1 yesterday, with a view to building up slowly again. Would be nice to get to the 5k bit, but I’m not going to obsess if I can’t make it.

That's a shame. I think a policy of "don't do it or overdo it if it hurts" is best with sporting injuries, but I'd also get advice to diagnose / recommended a course of action. No fun if it's causing you pain beyond what you might expect working muscles not used to the stresses.

if you think that this will be a long term problem then it may be worth looking into run/walk rather than just pure running. stuff by Jeff Galloway is particularly well thought of
a lot of people find they are actually quicker overall doing this than just running constantly
  • 29 mins today, not bad as I was late and ran there just as it started... Also a lot of running on grass which was as slippery as hell. I'd probably be better off in trail shoes for parkrun though as I'm yet to land on my arse I can probably manage without.

Trying to hit the new year running, literally, so done am 8k and 6k in last few days. Hopefully can build up some fitness and run some 10ks in a decent time

    here's a little bit on Jeffing: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2024/dec/29/jeffing-the-run-walk-method-that-can-get-you-to-the-marathon-finishing-line

The current prediction is for it to be ok in the south but it could easily change.

We are lined up for the High Wycombe parkrun on NYD.  My SiL’s family are Wycombe fans and we’re at the match yesterday so I’m wondering how my CAFC hat and shirt will go down.
  • Lord it @Hex , Lord it
  • This morning's updates suggest the strongest winds will not reach London and Kent until well after parkruns although it will still be windy !  However I predict many organisers will play safe and cancel anyway given the general forecast.

Yes, it’s all a bit boring isn’t it.
Some of them are much better at doing updates than others and there’s less venues tomorrow anyway. I just know that the one I’m looking at will not announce anything until I arrive and discover it’s been blown away or something daft…
  • Christ this is going to be windy
  • Luckily Wycombe is in a valley and they've just pronounced it ON.
  • Lovely run in the wind today at Lordship after my local Ally Pally called off. Managed 44 park runs last year, here’s to another good year
  • My first stop and walk for the first time in ages :-(
  • Just back from the Maidstone River PR,first time I have run this one, very pleasant along Allington river, they all seem tough courses, that's probably down to me getting old, but got round in one piece, good turnout with people from Gravesend etc.
  • Yep, windy and boggy at Lloyd as expected and I don’t think I’d have managed that hill even in spikes without doing myself a mischief.
    Oh well 1/54…
  • Wycombe Rye was wet underfoot but as you are running around the floodplain of the river Wye it was better than expected.  The rain was blown right along the valley and through the park - not particularly pleasant running (or walking) into it.  It's a mostly flat, grass and narrow path, out and back in a loop, course with along gentle rise and 12-15 steep steps.  My time was 2 seconds quicker than last week at Shorne.  There were 338 runners.
  • Well done Hex, I am going along to Shorne on the 18th Jan, should imagine the boggy slope will zap my energy on the 1st lap!

It's the runners on tiptoe thinking that's the way for them to avoid slipping on the down slope that get in my way !  That means I've got to do something similar which is strength-zapping (may be over stating this a bit !).  I prefer to stretch my legs and go for it.

  • Sutcliffe was the destination of choice today. Not feeling on top form due to a few too many shandies last night seeing in the new year. The blustery conditions made for heavy going, but a big hats off for all the marshals who stood there braving the weather and giving up their time so the run could go ahead.
  • Go very careful today boys and girls
  • Woke up at 9 so perhaps dodged a bullet. Maybe a run this afternoon but wife and kids out all day so I've been given the task list from hell
  • The weather is too much risk for my knees today, so spending a rare day resting up as the meniscus on my good knee is a bit sore at the moment!
  • Shorne was cancelled so we diverted to Cyclopark for only my 2nd visit.  A couple of slippery bits but ok.  The first out and back took about 30secs longer than normal due to extra runners.

    Bedfont Lakes this morning.
Pretty icy and had the shortest of snowfalls halfway through lap one which was nice.
Least bad time of the year 🤪
  • Ingrebourne Hill this morning and it was a good one.  326 runners, nearly all tourists due to this event only being 4 weeks old and also the only 'I' in greater London.
I bumped into my boss at the start who warned me that unless I ran under a certain time I would be fired. I ran my arse off so hopefully I've still got a job Monday morning.
The park is lovely but the car park is small so park at either the Tesco store just down the road or in one of the turnings opposite the park entrance. The course is 3 laps, with a short hill at the start of the first small lap followed by two flatter longer laps.
One I would probably go back to, especially in the warmer weather.

  • I did Durlston Country Park parkrun today one of the hilly ones, I walked up the hills, 200 meters climbing in total. Managed just under 50 minutes. Hopefully my slowest of the year🤞

Perhaps, after last nights snow and heavy rain, we should take a few moments to think of those fearless runners (like Mrs Hex) who are attempting today's KFL at Minnis Bay.  May the rain cease, the freezing wind stop blowing and the ice on 3 foot deep ditches be thick ;-)
