Anyone else on here doing the Eltham Park 5 (miles) on Sunday 16th June, organised by New Eltham Joggers?
Sadly No,
I love running but organised running is just too expensive for me. This one for example is £16.52 for what is a 45 minute local run. The London half marathons are all now £55-65. It’s a lot of money for something you can do for free.
Exactly this. Could never get my head around paying to run a race up to 10k distance when I was happily running 35-40 miles a week on average without needing a medal or t shirt to prove it. Had no issues paying for the marathons I was involved in and the 2-3 halfs I ran in the build ups to the marathons just to break up the monotony of the training but paying for a 5k or 10k, no thanks. People in my run club used to look at me like I was a weirdo when I said it.
I'm amazed that so many people sign up for them tbh.
It brings me back to the comment I made about one of my running friends who ran her 300th marathon recently. Whats the average price of a marathon now, £35-ish? 300 x £35 = £10,500. Christ almighty.
I see what you mean, but a lot of people do get something more out of running with other people - I know a load of people who do RunThrough races each week (https://www.runthrough.co.uk/) which are upwards of £20, but it's a social thing as much as a fitness thing (and you get a medal!) A lot of people who do them aren't very fast - slower than me, and I'm slow at 34m for a 5K - but get something more out of it than a solo slog round the streets can provide. It's as much in the head as in the legs.
I haven't run on my own in ages, but try to get the odd midweek short run in with GoodGym (https://www.goodgym.org) which is an optional tenner a week and always sociable.
This is why I find Parkrun such an amazing movement. I get the thrill of running with hundreds of others and don’t have to pay a penny to do so (from a moral perspective accept I need to Marshall volunteer at some point this year)
Ha! Marshalling's great. Doing the finish tokens and timing's intense but worth it. And you've never really done Parkrun until you've sat at a cafe table helping count the finish tokens.
Have probably said this before, but if you get a chance, volunteer at a junior one. It reminds you that it is meant to be fun after all (the odd and very rare pushy parent aside).

Managed to knock over a minute off my 10k best tonight.
Quite bizarrely, my three best runs have all been on Monday nights when I’m tired. Go figure...
Consistency of regular exercise, weight loss, build up of the blood vessels in your legs and cardiovascular system. You didn't run park run Sat did you? Presumably you didnt run Sun either. You might be knackered on Monday but your legs have had a rest? Makes all the difference.
Fair point. Looking back over last 10 days my runs have been Thur- Sat - Sun - Wed - Fri - Mon. Will prob do Thur - Sun later this week.
I’m at the point now where im comfortably throwing in a 10-12k run once a week. However, that feels my limit. I’m still well short of the next step up to a Half. Going slower doesn’t seem to help.
I think I need to go back to run / walk / run to get up to it, but having run now for a year I really don’t want to go back to putting walking intervals back in!
You're progressing really well. I'd look to either push to run 5k & 10k quicker or focus on extending out distance to 15k.
Either way your 5k and 10k will only benefit by having longer runs.

If it's a passion so be it.
What would 300 football matches, 300 trips to cinema, concerts, meals out or nights in the pub cost. Probably a lot more.
Also probably spread over a number of years.
When put like that I've probably done more on pot noodles :-)
Turned up to the Clapham Common PR to find it had been cancelled. Ran the course anyway, with others who turned up, and surprisingly beat my PB with a 28:30. Well happy with that, but it felt very slow, and it still hurt like hell.
28 something or other... Changed the route, due to an event in the park, and it was congestion at the beginning... 6m30s for first k. Meant I had some the tank for the finish.
Also, ran alongside Mr parkrun. Do other places have these? The oldish bloke who seemingly knows everyone, thanks every Marshall, says "keep left" when there's a bike coming... And does it all at the top of his voice. It's like having a satnav voiced by Brian Blessed. Whole bloody race.
Set PBs for 5k (27.55), 1 mile and 2 miles today. Also a Park Run PB (28:51) although when you start near the back the timing is very inaccurate. Second in my age group, which is also a best. Hugely happy with that. Went off too fast in the sense that the last kilometre was the slowest, and I suffered like a dog. I’ve learned that I can’t eat anything at all before the run, except a gel.
Just done my first 10k for ages, 58 mins or so... I'm going to be stiff tomorrow
Well done mate. I’ve attempted that twice in the last few days and failed miserably.
went exactly 2 weeks without a run, put on 6 pounds, and have reversed distance and pace by about 10 months of running. Legs really heavy all way round, breathing all over the place. Literally feel back at square one. I’ve positively loved running over the last year but back to back this week have had my two least enjoyable runs :-)

It comes back quicker than when you originally trained.
Try to keep yourself motivated and you might even find in a couple of weeks you're faster than you were pre break.
5.7k today, after 6.3k yesterday. First time I’ve run two days in a row. Seem to be improving a bit with repetition.
Just remember that recovery is a must. Even if that recovery is another run but at a super light pace and short distance i.e 2k at a real jogging pace.
Your body needs time to repair and rebuild. Push it too far and you could end up with a lengthy lay off.

Ta. Park Run on Saturday next should be ok though? It was only a few months ago that running to the end of my road would make my chest feel like it was exploding. My blood pressure is coming down, so hoping the doctor will let me reduce my pill dosage soon.

Yeah you'll be fine just remember the steps that progressed you to where you are.
You'll be fine with 1 or 2 days between runs, certainly don't be afraid to chuck in the odd 2 consecutive days running, just allow a bit of extra recovery after.
I am just getting back into the swing of regular runs having lost my mojo a bit. Had to take time to get back into it and have come through without any injuries pretty rapidly as a result of ensuring rest days.
Gonna give Parkrun a crack on Saturday to see where I am in terms of 5k Fitness... It's a completely different challenge to Marathon training, personally one I find tougher! But boy have I missed it.
One of the benefits of starting a new job and there being far fewer people to have lunch with and talk football is managed to get out for two lunch runs this week. Hoping to have a regular 20k or so through the week.
Got an email from the trust about the Royal Parks 10k series. I am already doing it but have asked if I can get a T-shirt for a donation. Is anyone else doing those runs?
No, not sure how it works as my work sort it, but I think companies sign up for a certain number of places. Probably costs a fair bit, and thousands do it. Starts and ends at the royal artillery grounds, and goes round the city, st Paul's, Liverpool Street kind of area. They close all the roads much to the irritation of some commuters.
I think I came about 2500 last year, at about 26min30s winner about 15 mins. Good fun...

How did marshalling and the Eltham south run go @Riviera ?
